Nike, which reports earnings after the bell Thursday, is trading at less than 24 times forward earnings. That's well below the longer-term average of about 29 times forward earnings. On Wednesday, Nike traded more than two times its average daily options volume. The most active call options were the September 100 calls, 8,000 of which traded at an average price of around $3.22. Declining sales (inflation-adjusted) and market share, leading to declining investor confidence, explain the lower-than-average historical multiple.

Anne Andrews, a leading bankruptcy lawyer for victims, predicted tumult if the Supreme Court struck down the Purdue plan in an interview with Business Insider ahead of the decision. Much of the growth, from a forecast 21% market share this year, is expected to come outside of China. The rapid expansion of Chinese automakers is a growing concern for legacy automakers and politicians globally. In North America, Chinese automakers are forecast to only achieve a 3% market share, largely in Mexico, where one in five vehicles are expected to be Chinese brands by 2030. In most other major regions of the world, AlixPartners reports that the share of Chinese automakers is expected to exponentially grow. Chinese brands in China also are expected to grow from 59% to 72% in market share, according to AlixPartners.

In a more defensive environment, we instead gravitate to lower volatility, higher dividend-paying stocks. By October, AT & T had pounded out a series of higher lows, confirming a rotation to a bullish trend. As a long-term trend gauge, I would assume that any price action above this trendline is still within the context of a bullish phase. I've also drawn a short-term trendline in pink, lining up the price lows in April, May, and June. Since an uptrend is formed by a pattern of higher highs and higher lows, then a consistent short-term uptrend would most likely remain above this trendline.

We spent weeks planning a "cake party" for our other work friends. The study, published this month in the journal Pediatric Research, shows that parents’ screen use is associated with increased adolescent screen time – along with problematic social media, video game and mobile phone use. The data revealed that 72.9% of parents said they use screens around their adolescents. “Even if parents think their kids are not paying attention, the data shows one of the biggest predictors of preteen screen use is what their parents do with screens in front of them,” Nagata said. In the US, the surgeon general has called for warning labels on social media apps to mitigate “significant harms” associated with their use. “There’s going to be a lot more guidance for parents to help their children navigate social media,” Nagata said.

Poster of Christophe Versini for the Rassemblement National (National Rally) party, with Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella on it, on June 24, 2024. Recent polling suggests the far-right Rassemblement National (RN, or National Rally) party, led by Jordan Bardella, could win the most seats in the National Assembly, followed by the left-wing alliance Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP, or New Popular Front). French bond yields — which move inversely to prices — have been relatively contained. Even then, he added, the spread of French bond yields over their German counterparts looked set to remain higher than before Macron called the election. There is little concern over France enacting its own "Frexit," he said, with even National Rally having moved away from actively proposing leaving the euro area or the European Union.

Then, peering out over the country’s main political plaza on Wednesday, Bolivia’s top ministers saw the armored vehicles and troops spilling out their doors. Within moments, the president, Luis Arce, addressed his inner circle — “We are facing a coup!” — before heading to the presidential palace to confront, face to face, the general trying to remove him from power. The coup attempt failed, lasting a mere three hours, and ended in the arrest of the general, whose motivation for the attack appeared to be, at least in part, anger over his firing by Mr. Arce the day before. But it was hardly the end of Mr. Arce’s problem, or the challenges facing Bolivia. Mr. Arce, 60, a former finance minister, took office in 2020 during a democratic election that seemed to symbolize a new, more hopeful chapter in a country coming off a period of intense political tumult.

Nearly 20 years ago, a wry young human rights lawyer, Keir Starmer, told a documentary filmmaker that it had struck him as “odd” to receive the title of Queen’s Counsel, “since I often used to propose the abolition of the monarchy.”Mr. Starmer, now the leader of Britain’s Labour Party, has long since disavowed his anti-monarchy statements as youthful indiscretions. In 2014, he knelt before Charles, then the Prince of Wales, who tapped him on the shoulder with a sword and awarded him a knighthood. If Sir Keir Starmer is swept into 10 Downing Street in the general election next week, as polls suggest he will be, he may end up more politically in sync with Charles then the last two Conservative prime ministers, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, whose terms have overlapped with the king’s reign. On issues including climate change, housing, immigration and Britain’s relations with the European Union, experts say, Mr. Starmer is likely to find common ground with a king who holds longstanding, often fervent, views on those issues but is constitutionally barred from taking any role in politics.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off Thursday in the first presidential debate of the 2024 general election — and the presumptive nominees could show voters where they stand on tax policy, experts say. One key issue is the Republicans' expiring tax breaks enacted via the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, or TCJA. Without action from Congress, several provisions will sunset after 2025, including lower federal income tax brackets, a boosted child tax credit and higher estate and gift tax exemptions, among others. More than 60% of tax filers could face increased taxes in 2026 if TCJA provisions expire, according to the Tax Foundation. Fully extending TCJA provisions could add an estimated $4.6 trillion to the deficit over the next decade, the Congressional Budget Office reported in May.
