The U.S. women's national soccer team is looking to continue its undefeated streak at this year's Olympics as the squad prepares for a second match against Germany in the semifinals. She became the youngest player on the women's squad to score in extra time in a knockout round at the Games since the 2004 Athens Olympics. Marc Atkins / Getty ImagesRodman, along with Sophia Smith, 23, and Mallory Swanson, 26, have been a defining feature of this new era of the U.S. women's national team so far. Winning against Germany would guarantee at least a silver medal as the team moves into the final match. The only other time the women's national team has gone undefeated at the Olympics was in 2012, which was also the last time the team won gold at the Games.

She was released last week as part of the prisoner swap between the US, Russia, and other countries. Many American parents are used to utilizing a variety of parenting strategies and baby items in their everyday lives. The primary reason for this has to do with finances and parental leave. Day care or a private nanny can be very pricey, so a nanny share can help cut down on costs for some families. In Germany, both group day care and home day care providers are subsidized by the state; in some areas of Germany, day care is free of charge. But in Germany, due to lengthier parental leave, most kids start day care around age 1.

The Olympic sendoff friendlies seemed to clue at an early theory: park the bus, play defense-first soccer and frustrate the United States until you find a chance to try an attack. Although having Coffey back from suspension helped toward that end, the United States was still thin in central areas. Berger and Naeher were both instrumental in keeping the score 0-0 throughout regulation, Berger moreso given the United States’ stronger attacking presence. Tournament Naeher is a different beast from any other level of her play. The United States heads to its first Olympic women’s gold medal match since the 2012 London Games.

A German court ruled on Tuesday that a protester who shouted “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” at a rally in Berlin in October had condoned criminal acts — the Hamas-led terrorist attacks on Israel — and gave her a fine of 600 euros, about $650. The slogan, which has radically different interpretations, was later banned in Germany, viewed as basically constituting a call for the elimination of Israel. The court case had been seen as a test of that law. The Israel-Hamas conflict has underlined the delicate balance in Germany between freedom of expression and the country’s relationship with Israel. One of the foundations of Germany since the Holocaust is support for Israel, a principle known as a Staatsräson, or “state reason.” Since Oct. 7, activism in Germany has been roiled by that tension, with cancellations, bans and fierce debates about what can and can’t be said about Israel and the war.

Read previewAs the 2024 Olympics Games plays out in Paris, some nonprofits are warning of a dark reality looming over the sporting event. Wijeyakumar said Rahab's Daughters had distributed pamphlets ahead of the Paris Olympics at a local refugee camp. Rahab's Daughters has identified labor and sex trafficking occurring mainly within the manufacturing, construction, retail, and hospitality industries in Paris. The US National Human Trafficking Hotline explains on its website, however, that human trafficking is "notoriously underreported." These figures are based on interviews with survivors, reports Rahab's Daughters has received, and data it has collected from online ads.

Voices across the globe expressed concern Sunday over the growing number of arrests in Venezuela following last weekend’s disputed elections. The AP processed almost 24,000 images of tally sheets, representing the results from 79% of voting machines. According to the calculations, the González received 6.89 million votes, nearly half a million more than the government says Maduro won. A sell-off in markets around the world turned into a rout on Monday as investors grew panicky about signs of a slowing American economy, with stocks tumbling across Asia. The declines were especially pronounced in Japan, where the Topix index, which includes companies that represent a broad swath of the country’s economy, fell 12.2 percent. The decline at one point triggered a “circuit breaker” mechanism that halts trading to let markets digest large fluctuations. The Nikkei 225 index, considered the benchmark in Japan, also fell 12.4 percent. South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index fell more than 10 percent, triggering its own halt in trading.

Escaping the brutal Russian penal system would seem like blessed deliverance to most inmates. But not to Ilya Yashin, who stunned the world last week when he angrily condemned his inclusion in a sweeping prisoner swap that freed him and a handful of other opposition figures in Russia. Instead, he portrayed it as an act of duplicity rather than a benevolent humanitarian gesture. And I say sincerely, more than anything I want now to go back home.”To those who have followed Mr. Yashin’s career, his stance should not have been so surprising. Walter Arlen, a Viennese musical prodigy who fled to the United States after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and became a music critic and a late-in-life composer of Holocaust and Jewish-exile remembrances in song, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 103. The death, in a hospital, was not widely reported at the time; Howard Myers, Mr. Arlen’s husband and sole survivor, confirmed it to The New York Times only recently. Mr. Arlen and Mr. Myers, longtime residents of Santa Monica, had been companions for 65 years and were married in 2008 after California’s Supreme Court upheld the legality of same-sex marriages. Even after eight decades, Mr. Arlen’s memories remained vivid — of his father being dragged off to a concentration camp; of his mother’s nervous breakdown and suicide; of his family’s home, business and bank accounts stolen by the Nazi authorities; and of witnessing the vicious murder of an older Jew by an SS guard.
