Summary UK spy chief says Russian aggression will last yearsMore than 400 Russian spies expelled from Europe, he saysChina playing 'long game' to influence future UK assetsLONDON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The expulsion of more than 400 suspected Russian spies from across Europe this year has struck the "most significant strategic blow" against Moscow in recent history and taken Vladimir Putin by surprise, Britain's domestic spy chief said. McCallum said Britain had refused more than 100 Russian diplomatic visa applications on national security grounds since then. "The serious point is that the UK must be ready for Russian aggression for years to come," he said. The spy chief also said Chinese authorities were monitoring and intimidating the Chinese diaspora, with action ranging from forcible repatriation to assault. "To intimidate and harass UK nationals or those who have made the UK their home cannot be tolerated," McCallum said.
Nov 14 (Reuters) - Sports teams and businesses may shy away from long-term deals with crypto firms to minimise their risks after troubled crypto exchange FTX filed for U.S. bankruptcy protection last week, industry experts told Reuters on Monday. "I think crypto will be at the bottom of prospect lists for quite some time. Until that industry stabilises and has better oversight and controls -- if it happens -- then maybe it might be a viable partner." "As it relates to increasing sponsorship revenue, teams/leagues are always looking for new opportunities, but what's happening with FTX is a wake-up call." Singapore-based crypto exchange Crypto.com said on Monday it had moved about $1 billion to FTX over the course of a year, but most of it was recovered and exposure at the time of FTX's collapse was less than $10 million.
SINGAPORE/LONDON, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Regulators are moving in on distressed crypto exchange FTX as it scrambles to raise billions in funds to stave off collapse, while its chief executive, Sam Bankman-Fried, faces heightened scrutiny. The Securities Commission of the Bahamas has frozen assets of FTX Digital Markets, an FTX subsidiary. FTX Australia called in administrators on Friday, the Australian Financial Review reported, citing a company statement. Bankman-Fried is under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for potential securities law violations, Bloomberg reported, citing a source. This source said helping out FTX was the question for larger investors in FTX.
Meanwhile, the Securities Commission Of the Bahamas said on Thursday it had frozen assets of FTX Digital Markets, an FTX subsidiary. Broker Genesis Trading disclosed its derivatives business has approximately $175 million in locked funds on FTX. "We believe there is a 20-30% chance of a FTX rescue at best," said Matthew Dibb, chief operating officer of Singapore-based crypto investment manager Stack Funds. He is seeking the remainder from other funds, including current investors such as Sequoia Capital, the source added. It was not clear whether Bankman-Fried will be able to raise the funds he needs or if these investors would participate.
NEW YORK, Nov 8 (Reuters) - An unexpected result in Tuesday’s U.S. midterm election could roil markets positioned for relative calm, options strategists said. Control of the U.S. Congress is at stake in Tuesday's midterms, with Republicans favored by polls and betting markets to win control of the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate. At the individual stock level, certain names have the potential for higher election-related volatility, strategists at Goldman Sachs said in a note earlier this month. Meanwhile, shares of tobacco company Philip Morris International Inc (PM.N) could be volatile around regulatory restrictions, Goldman’s analysts wrote. On the eve of Election Day, Donald Trump called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi an "animal." Trump's comment came two weeks after Pelosi's husband was violently assaulted inside his home. The assault of Pelosi's husband, Paul, early in the morning of October 28 thrust to the fore the remarkable rise in threats to lawmakers and their families in recent years. In court papers, prosecutors alleged that DePape broke into the Pelosi home in San Francisco and shouted, "Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?" Threats against public officials have increased amid a rise in violent political speech.
Republicans are favored to win control of the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate, polls and betting markets show, though there are still hours left to vote. "I think the markets are rallying at the prospect of gridlock," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Cresset Capital in Chicago. "Fiscal spending has created a challenge for central banks worldwide. The S&P 500 (.SPX), which finished up 0.6% on the day, has risen about 5% over the last month. With Democrat Joe Biden in the White House, that potential result would lead to a split government. Control of even one chamber of Congress would give Republicans the power to bring Biden's legislative agenda to a halt and demand deep spending cuts. "The question for many is whether investors will respond positively to the deadlock in Washington," said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda. BEIJING, Nov 4 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and a delegation of business leaders landed in Beijing on Friday morning, kicking off the first visit by a leader of a G7 nation to China in three years. China's strict zero-COVID policy and growing tensions with the West have made it unfeasible for leaders of major western powers to visit China, while Chinese President Xi Jinping has only just resumed foreign trips. Amid historic inflation and looming recession in Germany, Scholz will be looking to emphasise the need for continued cooperation with China, analysts say. In the run-up to the visit, there had been criticism of the visit within the EU and the German government coalition, mainly from the Green Party and the Liberals. Scholz has changed his tune even faster, but he does not have as solid of a domestic political standing as Merkel," said Wang.
The United States on Wednesday called for Iran to be expelled from a U.N. commission on women, citing the regime’s “systematic oppression” of women and its violent crackdown on street protests. Iranian women have been at the forefront of protests across the country since a 22-year-old woman from the country’s Kurdish region, Mahsa Amini, died in police custody in September. Human rights groups have made similar allegations and issued detailed accounts of the crackdown. Two rights groups, Norway-based group Iran Human Rights and the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, said last week that more than 250 protesters have been killed since the protests began. “It’s time for us to stop abetting the Islamic Republic of Iran and start supporting the freedom-loving people of Iran,” said Boniadi.

REUTERS/Tingshu WangHONG KONG/SHANGHAI, Oct 27 (Reuters) - China's digital yuan took the centre stage in the world's largest cross-border central bank digital currency (CBDC) trial to date, a report showed, pointing to how Beijing is speeding up yuan globalization efforts amid rising geopolitical tensions. China's digital currency, or e-CNY, was the most issued, and actively transacted token in the $22 million pilot that used CBDCs to settle cross-border trades, a Bank of International Settlement (BIS) report showed. The PBOC's participation in m-Bridge represents its ambition to eventually promote global, wholesale use of the e-CNY. But China's yuan internationalisation, digital or not, faces challenges amid a slowing economy ravaged by COVID flare-ups, and a property debt crisis.
It's long been a dream of satellite communications visionaries, but bulky, specialized and typically expensive satellite phones fell short of mass appeal. While SpaceX has launched more than 3,000 first generation satellites so far, adding a direct-to-phone service will require thousands more. Private venture Lynk Global likewise aims to provide a cell tower in space from satellites, with plans for a constellation of several thousand in a few years. And while some build out satellite networks, other major players are eyeing Earth-bound innovations, with systems dependent on a specialized antenna in phones. In partnership with Globalstar , the feature allows users to send compressed text messages from iPhone 14s via satellites.
Nuclear war remains unlikely but Russia's recent threats have raised attention to nuclear safety. As Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine, concerns about nuclear safety have returned vividly to the fore. Experts tend to agree that a nuclear attack is not impossible but remains unlikely. Still, with nine countries sharing about 12,700 nuclear warheads, the risk of nuclear war is always present. Here are 13 do's and don'ts in case of a nuclear attack.

SHANGHAI, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Transactions using China's digital yuan surpassed 100 billion yuan ($13.9 billion) as of Aug. 31, China's central bank said on Wednesday, as the country continues its roll-out of a central bank digital currency. The spending involved 360 million transactions in pilot areas in 15 provinces and municipalities, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said, adding that more than 5.6 million merchants could now accept payments with the digital currency. China is at the fore of a global race to develop central bank digital currencies, although adoption is still in the early stages. Transactions using e-CNY rose from 87.6 billion yuan by the end of 2021, the PBOC said. The central bank also took part in the cross-border multiple Central Bank Digital Currency (mCBDC) Bridge trial developed by the Bank of International Settlements and conducted tests to connect with Hong Kong's local digital payment system, it said.
LONDON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Cryptoasset companies should set aside capital like banks when undertaking similar activities, regulators proposed on Tuesday in their first global rules as a "crypto winter" wiped $2 trillion off the sector, leaving investors nursing losses. The Financial Stability Board (FSB), which coordinates financial rulemaking among Group of 20 Economies (G20), made nine recommendations for members to apply. Currently, the sector is largely unregulated in most countries, having to only comply with rules for safeguarding against money laundering and terrorist financing as regulators warn investors they risk losing every penny. "Concerns about the risks they pose to financial stability are therefore likely to come back to the fore sooner rather than later," Knot said in a letter to G20 finance ministers meeting in Washington this week. The proposals seek cross-border consistency to regulating crypto-assets, particularly as the European Union finalises groundbreaking rules to regulate the sector from 2024.

Work has always been dysfunctional, our tolerance for it just got lowerWorkers are still quitting in droves during the Great Resignation. The discord we're seeing, then, is vocal pushback from employees — emboldened by a tight market and, yes, social media fervor — not wanting to return to traditional models of work, Klotz says. "Everyone is making money off of their work, and they're not getting return on the investment of their labor. REUTERS/Hannah McKayLONDON, Sept 15 (Reuters Breakingviews) - UK finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng wants to make the City more competitive. That means UK banks and foreign ones operating in London might have to keep their compensation policies broadly the same to retain staff. Bringing the highly charged issue to the fore means Kwarteng might have less cover to push ahead with more meaningful changes, like getting rid of the bank levy. CONTEXT NEWSBritish finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng is seeking to scrap Britain’s cap on bankers’ bonuses, the Financial Times reported on Sept. 14.
His doctor had prescribed him antidepressants, but he was starting to realize that his mental health issues needed additional care. They said that doing so could alleviate the struggles of others, and that it's important for law firm attorneys to understand they aren't alone. He also co-founded the Lawyers Depression Project, a support network of some 900 legal professionals around the world, an endeavor he has found meaningful. "I didn't feel like I could keep surviving in an environment that played into the worst aspects of my own mental health," Alexander said.
