“I hope he doesn’t get charged,” DeSantis told CNN in one of his first sit-down interviews with a mainstream national news outlet since becoming a candidate in late May. “We’ve gone down the road in this country of trying to criminalize differences in politics,” DeSantis said. The rare interview with CNN suggested a shift in tactics to catch Trump, who leads DeSantis in the race for the Republican nomination in opinion polls by double-digit percentage points. While DeSantis has proven to be a strong fundraiser, his campaign recently laid off several staffers in an attempt to slow its rate of spending. When an elected Democratic state attorney said he would not prosecute anyone over abortion or transgender care, DeSantis removed him.

A political ad attacking 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump features what at first listen might sound like Trump's real voice. A representative for Trump's campaign blasted the use of a fake Trump voice in the ad. The United States may soon expand its export controls to cover semiconductors used in artificial intelligence and access to cloud computing. The People’s Republic has responded with tit-for-tat export controls on gallium and germanium, two strategic metals used in chips and other technologies where it has a dominant position. This is what the U.S. and its allies did during the last Cold War, when they established the Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls (CoCom). The United States’ subsidies for green technologies via its Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) caused tension with its allies. Its premier, Li Qiang, travelled to Germany last month hoping to persuade it not to row in behind the United States.
