CNN —Months before Donald Trump was indicted for mishandling classified documents, a federal judge said that investigators had “strong evidence” that the former president “intended” to hide classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, according to newly released court documents. Judge Beryl Howell cited, among other things, the discovery of additional classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago months after the FBI’s search of the property in the summer of 2022. The ruling was among hundreds of pages of previously sealed filings that were publicly docketed Tuesday in the criminal classified documents case against Trump. Nauta has been charged alongside Trump and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira in the case, facing charges of mishandling sensitive or classified materials and obstruction. U.S. crude stockpiles declined by 2.5 million barrels last week as refiners processed more crude in a sign that demand might be perking up. A wildfire was nearing Canada’s largest oil producing region of Canada prompting the evacuation since Tuesday of about 6,600 people from Fort McMurray, Alberta. The evacuation has evoked fearful memories of a major fire in 2016 that destroyed roughly 2,400 homes and businesses, forced 90,000 people to flee and became the most expensive natural disaster in Canadian history. The start of wildfire season in Canada follows a record setting year in 2023 when about 45 million acres of forest burned, a huge increase from the annual average of 6.1 million. Unusually large fires spanned the country with choking smoke from fires in Quebec filling the skies of Eastern Canada and filtering down and degrading air quality down the eastern seaboard of the United States.

Gold prices flat as U.S. inflation data takes centre-stage

Gold prices traded flat on Wednesday as investors looked forward to a critical U.S. inflation print that could offer clues on the Federal Reserve's interest rate-cut trajectory. Spot gold held its ground at $2,359.99 per ounce, as of 0704 GMT, trading in a narrow $6 range, after gaining 1% on Tuesday. According to a Reuters poll, the data is expected to show that core inflation in April rose 0.3% month-over-month, down from 0.4% the prior month. Bullion is known as an inflation hedge, but higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold. However, data on Tuesday showed that U.S. producer prices increased more than expected in April.

U.S. crude oil inventories fell 3.104 million barrels in the week ended May 10, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday. Gasoline inventories fell by 1.269 million barrels and distillates rose by 673,000 barrels. "Expectations of another drawdown in U.S. oil inventories should support oil prices," ANZ Research said in a note. Oil prices also found support from a softer U.S. dollar and stimulus measures from China, said independent market analyst Tina Teng, with a weaker greenback making dollar-denominated oil cheaper for investors holding other currencies. "The U.S. CPI and China's economic data are key to driving oil prices for the rest of the week," she added.
