DETROIT, Sept 29 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain is expected to launch walkouts at more Detroit Three auto factories Friday, barring last-minute progress in bargaining that has moved slowly since last week. Talks among the UAW and negotiators for the Detroit Three were described as "very active" by one person briefed on the situation. The union has shut one assembly plant at each of the Detroit Three, and 38 parts distribution centers at GM and Stellantis. However, strikes at these plants would have less impact as the models affected are either money-losers or substantially less profitable than the big pickups. The union launched its first walkouts on Sept. 15, with simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant at each automaker.

But few of them besides Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 are selling at high enough volumes to support a full-scale assembly plant, according to a Reuters analysis of U.S. EV sales data for the first six months of 2023. But that market share was divided up among 103 different models, according to the Alliance's latest quarterly report on the EV market. All three posted weekly losses, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq registering their largest Friday-to-Friday percentage drops since March. On Thursday, the S&P 500 dipped below its 100-day moving average - a key support level - for the first time since March, Its failure to break above that level suggests the index is still under downward pressure. Among the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, consumer discretionary (.SPLRCD) suffered the steepest percentage loss, while tech (.SPLRCT) and energy (.SPNY) were the only gainers. The S&P 500 posted one new 52-week high and 35 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 33 new highs and 321 new lows.

The UAW on Friday invited Biden to visit workers on its picket lines, and said that it would expand its Detroit strike to parts distribution centers across the United States at General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). "It’s very rare for a president to visit strikers," said Jeremi Suri, a historian and presidential scholar at the University of Texas at Austin. The White House said the president appreciates the UAW invitation, saying Biden will continue to fight for workers, but but did not immediately commit to visiting the strikers. Biden said the automakers should "go further to ensure record corporate profits mean record contracts for the UAW," echoing sentiments by union leaders. Workers on the picket lines had mixed feelings over whether Biden should visit.

UAW President Shawn Fain, in a Facebook live event, said that by targeting distribution centers the strike becomes a nationwide event. Fain said Ford had improved its contract offer, including boosting profit sharing and agreeing to let workers strike over plant closures but said the union still has "serious issues" with Ford. Nearly 13,000 UAW workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio on Sept 15. "GM and Stellantis are looking at stockholder value and Ford is looking a lot more long-term that they have to make friends with labor." Fain said on Friday that the union had negotiated the elimination of lower wage tiers in some components facilities at Ford and GM.
