CNN —The Supreme Court ruled Friday in favor of an Oregon city that ticketed homeless people for sleeping outside, rejecting arguments that such “anti-camping” ordinances violate the Constitution’s ban on “cruel and unusual” punishment. The case centered on “anti-camping” ordinances in Grants Pass, Oregon, that were challenged by several residents experiencing homelessness. “For some people, sleeping outside is their only option.” The city, she said, “punishes them for being homeless. The ordinances barred people from sleeping in public with “bedding,” which can include sleeping bags or bundled-up clothing. In reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling, housing rights groups came out in full force to condemn the decision.

In fact, for many if not most jobs, there are no legal prohibitions on hiring those with criminal records. And when a criminal record of any kind turns up, that can kill a person’s chances, regardless of how well-qualified they may be for a position, either because an employer has a high aversion to risk or a bias against those with a record, Love said. Or the paperwork and time required to get approval for someone with a criminal record may be such that an employer simply decides to look at candidates without a record. “Sometimes people believe they are required to turn my clients down because of a criminal conviction. That law provides for eligible conviction records to be automatically “sealed,” meaning they should no longer show up on employer background checks.

Read previewLast September, New York City began enforcing its strict new regulations on short-term rentals. Since then, the number of legal short-term rentals listed on Airbnb and other platforms has plummeted. Impacts of the near-banLL18 was motivated by the city's housing affordability crisis, caused in large part by a severe housing shortage. Short-term rentals, including Airbnbs, can take homes that would otherwise be lived in full-time off the market, potentially exacerbating the housing shortage. But there's some evidence, including from Irvine, California, that restricting short-term rentals can reduce rents.

This spring, 30 ninth graders from a progressive private school near Greenwich Village went on a field trip. At the school, Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School, this sort of experiential learning was so routine that few parents were even notified of the destination: The People’s Forum in Midtown Manhattan, a hub for gatherings of left-wing activists. Afterward, parents were flabbergasted to learn where the students were taken, and what they were told. During their visit, a People’s Forum employee gave the students a 90-minute lecture on the perils of America’s support for Israel and Ukraine. A handful of Jewish students walked out during the presentation, upset.

Routing through ChinaChina Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom have long been in Washington's crosshairs. The FCC denied China Mobile's application to provide telephone service in 2019 and revoked China Telecom and China Unicom's licenses to do the same in 2021 and 2022 respectively. It cited at least nine instances where China Telecom misrouted internet traffic through China, putting it at risk of being intercepted, manipulated or blocked from reaching its intended destination. Male Kindergarten Teachers Are Here to Help. Many studies show that older boys benefit from having male teachers. There hasn’t been as much research on the youngest students and their teachers — in large part because there are so few male teachers in early education to begin with. Ms. Chang-Kim also exchanged texts during the event with Josef Sorett, the dean of Columbia College, according to The Free Beacon. Gilead 's experimental twice-yearly medicine to prevent HIV was 100% effective in a late-stage trial, the company said Thursday. The results bring Gilead one step closer to introducing a new form of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, and broadening its HIV business. If those results are positive, the company could bring lenacapavir for PrEP to market as soon as late 2025. RBC Capital Markets analyst Brian Abrahams expects Gilead's shot will significantly increase the number of people interested in preventive HIV medicine. In its statement disclosing the lenacapavir trial results Thursday, Gilead said it plans to share an update on how it plans to address access in such countries where people suffer high incidence rates of HIV.

Democrats’ Dream of a Wealth Tax Is Alive. For Now.

For years, liberal Democrats have agitated for the United States to tax wealth, not just income, as a way to ensure that rich Americans who derive wealth from real estate, stocks, bonds and other assets were paying more in taxes. On Thursday, that dream survived a Supreme Court scare, but just barely. The idea of a wealth tax was not directly before the court on Thursday. Justices were considering the constitutionality of a new tax imposed under former President Donald J. Trump that applies to certain income earned by businesses overseas. But in taking the case, the court could have pre-emptively ruled federal wealth taxation unconstitutional.

Triple-digit temperatures have hit the western states, with the Northeast, Midwest and Great Lakes regions expected to see extreme heat waves this week. Weather-related deaths from extreme heat are more common than from those from hurricanes, floods, extreme cold and other natural disasters. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1,220 people die from extreme heat every year. During periods of extreme heat, cooling is not just a luxury that provides comfort, but a necessary measure that helps families across all income brackets, and especially low-income families, stay safe.

U.S. crude oil held above $80 per barrel on Tuesday, after starting the week with strong gains. In a note to clients, Bob Yawger, executive director of energy futures at Mizuho Securities, cautioned that the rally in energy prices may largely be speculators covering short positions. Yesterday was the exception that proved the rule," Tamas Varga, an analyst with oil broker PVM, wrote in a note Tuesday. Oil prices had recently declined partly because of a decision by OPEC+ members to start rolling barrels back onto the market in the fourth quarter. Now oil is rising as analysts see the market tightening in the third quarter on expectations that summer fuel demand will draw down inventories.
