Many ALICEs are workers whose wages typically aren't enough to cover their bills, meaning they live paycheck to paycheck. And while those measures might reach the most financially distressed Americans, the benefit cut-offs leave behind the still-precarious group of ALICEs. Some state-to-state benefits are often available to individuals and families earning 200% to 250% of the Federal Poverty Level. Simultaneously, over the last 12 years, ALICEs have been falling behind on wage increases. AdvertisementIndeed, many Americans aren't necessarily falling into poverty, but they are increasingly teetering toward becoming ALICEs.

"We realized we couldn't afford the mortgage and the car payments and everything," Stonestreet told me. Americans work more, vacation less, spend more on healthcare, and die sooner than people in other high-income economies. These factors likely explain why some Americans are moving to countries that aren't generally considered low-cost-of-living locales. She said that living abroad afforded her a degree of flexibility and spontaneity that would be out of reach back home. From their temporary perch in Tirana, Albania, the couple told me via WhatsApp that their only regret about moving abroad was not doing it sooner.

As a disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent person, I take road trips every year and have learned some tips and tricks along the way. Enterprise, for example, offers hand controls, left foot accelerators, pedal extenders and spinner knobs to facilitate steering. Budget can provide hand controls, spinner knobs, a panoramic mirror, swivel seats and transfer boards. MobilityWorks, an accessible-vehicle and adaptive-equipment dealer, has rental locations in 34 states. For accessibleGO’s rental cars, you can request hand controls and a spinner knob at checkout.

CNN —Spanish television channel Movistar Plus+ says it will “stop working” with pundit and former Atlético Madrid assistant coach Germán Burgos following a derogatory comment he made about 16-year-old Barcelona star Lamine Yamal. Burgos is from Argentina, though he has spent much time in Spain as both a player and coach. “It was not my intention to harm Lamine Yamal in any way, the people of FC Barcelona, the players, UEFA, or the Movistar Plus+ platform where I work,” Burgos wrote on Instagram. My intention was not to disparage Lamine Yamal, quite the opposite. “Movistar Plus+ condemns any type of discrimination and will not allow these type of comments from any of its workers or collaborators tied to the platform.

Grateful for treatment, he jokes with the medical intern each morning. We both work as internists at a public hospital in the medical safety net, a loose term for institutions that disproportionately serve patients on Medicaid or without insurance. You could describe the safety net in another way, too, as a place that holds up a mirror to our nation. That the medical care the patient is receiving exceeds the cost of a year’s rent makes no practical difference. We needed to coin a phrase because so many of our patients die of the same thing.

Scotland’s Hate Crime and Public Order Act came into force last week, a contentious law that expands existing legislation to include transgender identity as a protected characteristic from hate crimes. In the first week of the law’s enactment, a feminist group, “Let Women Speak,” organized a rally against the legislation in Scotland’s capital on Saturday. Another major concern for those who oppose the Hate Crime Act is the supposed lack of clarity on what type of behavior could constitute an offense under the new law. But 25-year-old Scottish trans student Lucy (who asked not to be identified by her real name due to concerns about continued online abuse), said the new law does not reassure her. Scotland’s proposed reforms would have allowed transgender people to self-identify, without the need for a medical diagnosis or certificate.

Men had more strokes related to extreme temperatures than women, but it affected people across all age groups. While that may sound counterintuitive for global warming, cold temperatures also come along with climate change. Last year was the warmest since scientists started recording global temperatures in 1850 and temperatures are expected to break more records in the near future. The new study wasn’t designed to show why extreme temperatures that come with the climate crisis seem to be causing so many strokes. Extreme cold temperatures also can lead someone to have a stroke.

CNN —Using acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, during pregnancy was not associated with increased risk of autism, ADHD or intellectual disability in children, a new study found. “This is a very extensive and well-designed study that found no association between acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental impairment, including autism and ADHD,” he said. For example, the study found that parents who have neurodevelopmental disorders — which have strong heritability — are also more likely to use pain medications, like acetaminophen, during pregnancy. This relationship might make it seem like children who are exposed to acetaminophen during pregnancy are more likely to develop neurodevelopmental disorders, when, in fact, their increased risk is due to genetics, according to the study. The study found significant differences between birthing parents with higher acetaminophen use and those with lower or no use.

The study, published Saturday in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed how the drug helped people with Type 2 diabetes who also had one of the most common kind of heart failure, obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction can severely limit a person’s ability to participate in the activities of daily life. Often, people with type 2 diabetes who have this kind of heart failure have a more severe form than those who don’t have diabetes. People with a more severe form of heart failure sometimes don’t respond as well to medication as those with less severe disease. A highly popular class of drugs for diabetes and obesity is showing early potential to help patients with Parkinson's disease, too. But more research is needed to determine whether newer iterations of GLP-1s from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly may also help Parkinson's patients. The trial followed 156 people with early Parkinson's disease for a year. But one group was given an additional daily injection of Sanofi's drug, while the other was given a placebo. But use of Sanofi's drug was associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal side effects, which are common across all GLP-1s.

A sweeping law targeting hate speech went into effect in Scotland on Monday, promising protection against threats and abuse but drawing criticism that it could have a chilling effect on free speech. The protected classes as defined in the law include age, disability, religion, sexual orientation and transgender identity. Racial hatred was omitted because it is already covered by a law from 1986. The new law also does not include women among the protected groups; a government task force has recommended that misogyny be addressed in separate legislation. J.K. Rowling, the “Harry Potter” author who has been criticized as transphobic for her comments on gender identity, said the law was “wide open to abuse by activists,” and took issue with its omission of women.

However, virtual dating can't replace the chemistry and spark of an in-person meeting. Carlotta Cattelani, the UK country manager at the dating app Fruitz, told BI that meeting virtually makes dates more accessible. AdvertisementA virtual date is a less formal chance to see if your match is searching for the same things you are, Cattelani said. She warns that speaking virtually cannot entirely replace meeting someone in person, so FaceTime dates should be used sparingly. It's easier to be "catfished" on social media, she said, because virtual dates cannot replace the chemistry, body language, and eye contact you might experience in real life.

CNN —Flame retardants added for decades to thousands of consumer products in the United States may raise the risk of dying from cancer, according to new research. “The new study links PBDEs to deaths from cancer, building a case for the association between flame retardants and cancer mortality being real,” said Trasande, who researches the impact of plastics, flame retardants and other chemicals on children. Flame retardant chemicals also can pass to developing fetuses via the placenta and to newborns through breast milk, past research has found. In some cases, the industry has replaced these chemicals with newer phosphorus-based flame retardants, Trasande said, adding that researchers are now concerned these chemicals may be linked to cancer as well. When reupholstering older couches or chairs, be sure to replace the old foam with flame retardant-free foam.

Johannesburg, South Africa CNN —For South Africans, normality is a sliding scale. In October, a heavily armed gang blocked off one of the busiest highways near Johannesburg as it blew up a cash-in-transit vehicle – a security van carrying cash. Cash-in-transit, or CIT, heists are one of the most dramatic illustrations of a crime wave that has shocked even the most hardened South Africans. His argument is not entirely factual: crime affects South Africans from all walks of life, not just those earning a comfortable living. The South African police minister, Bheki Cele, recently highlighted what he called the successes of the Crime Intelligence division in tackling organized crime and rooting out corruption within the ranks of the force.
