WASHINGTON (AP) — Scientists have mapped the largest coral reef deep in the ocean, stretching hundreds of miles off the U.S. Atlantic coast. The largest yet known deep coral reef "has been right under our noses, waiting to be discovered,” said Derek Sowers, an oceanographer at the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust. Unlike tropical coral reefs, where photosynthesis is important for growth, coral this far down must filter food particles out of the water for energy. Deep coral reefs provide habitat for sharks, swordfish, sea stars, octopus, shrimp and many other kinds of fish, the scientists said. The world's largest tropical coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, stretches for about 1,430 miles (2,301 kilometers).

But even the lesser label of specially designated global terrorist group could jeopardize U.S. and Saudi efforts to construct a lasting peace deal to end the conflict. The conflict created a humanitarian catastrophe that Mr. Biden, as a candidate in 2020, vowed to address. Following a debate within the Trump administration, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo designated the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization and a specially designated global terrorist group in mid-January 2021. In February 2021, less than three weeks after Mr. Biden took office, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken reversed Mr. Pompeo’s designations. Asked by a reporter last week whether he considered the Houthis a terrorist group, Mr. Biden did not equivocate.

Tech earnings kick off next week with Netflix reporting on Tuesday and Tesla on Wednesday. If these tech giants paint a rosy picture, market sentiment could turn around for the Nasdaq. With this view in mind, I am looking to place a small bet against the tech sector using Snowflake (SNOW) as my primary trading vehicle. The Trade Setup: SNOW $195-$190 Bear Put Spread The trade structure I am using here is called a bear put spread, also known as a put debit spread. Most trading platforms will offer a bear put spread (or long put spread) as a trade type and automatically construct the trade for you.

California has long championed renewable energy, but a change in the state’s policies last year has led to a sharp decline in the installation of residential rooftop solar in the state. Thousands of companies — including installers, manufacturers and distributors — are reeling from the new policy, which took effect in April and greatly reduced incentives that had encouraged homeowners to install solar panels. Since the change, sales of rooftop solar installations in California dropped as much as 85 percent in some months of 2023 from a year earlier, according to a report by Ohm Analytics, a research firm that tracks the solar marketplace. Industry groups project that installations in the state will drop more than 40 percent this year and continue to decline through 2028. “The solar installations are off a ton,” said Michael Wara, a senior research scholar at Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.

But the world of modular housing, which includes multi-unit apartment buildings and conventional-looking houses, is littered with companies that have gone bust. Investors aren't convinced there's sufficient and consistent demand for modular housing in most markets. They tend to be run by people with deep experience in the construction industry, Erlich said. MOSCOW (AP) — A huge fire tore through a large warehouse used by Russia’s largest online retailer south of St. Petersburg on Saturday morning. The blaze covered an area of 70,000 square meters (more than 750,000 square feet), with 50,000 square meters (around 540,000 square feet) of the Wildberries warehouse collapsing, according to Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry. A video shot from a passenger jet flying nearby showed flames totally engulfing the warehouse, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky. Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said that firefighters had been able to prevent the fire from spreading across the entire area of the warehouse complex and to an electrical substation. Russian officials, cited by state news agency TASS, said Wildberries had obtained permission to construct the warehouse, but not to operate it.

Ballerinas like Sylvie Guillem, Diana Vishneva and Natalia Osipova have also pursued independent paths but turned mainly to contemporary work. Dancers today are phenomenal, even better than when I began, and apart from myself, I wanted to create opportunities. The experience of being a freelance dancer during the pandemic, and not being protected by a company, made me realize I would like to do something for other freelancers. I was pregnant with my second daughter, Ella, and I had to deal with other people’s decisions and choose another path. I have seen what works, what doesn’t, the director’s point of view, the dancers’ points of view.

The consumer discretionary and growth/tech sectors are the typically the first ones to take a beating when markets start pulling back. With this view in mind, I am looking to put on a bearish options trade on Domino's Pizza (DPZ) , which belongs to the sector. The Trade Setup: DPZ $410-$415 bear call spread With a bearish directional bias in place, the trade structure I have chosen is called a bear call spread also known as a call credit spread. To construct my trade, I will want to sell a $410 call option and buy a $415 call option as a single unit. So it is best not to trade when an earnings event overlaps your trade window.

Inflation-protected bonds may be the last thing on investors' minds amid cooling prices, but BlackRock is betting on the securities for the longer term. Due to that, BlackRock named inflation-protected securities one of its top 2024 strategic calls for those with a time horizon of five to 10 years. "We see inflation going through a roller coaster over a longer term," Li said. Buying TIPS Investors can buy TIPS in five-year , 10-year and 30-year terms through the TreasuryDirect website . A plan for a "mega" Chick-fil-A store in Tennessee is the latest project to encounter backlash from locals concerned about the fast-food chain's frequently crowded drive-thrus lines. In Collierville, Tennessee, Chick-fil-A has proposed replacing a 23-year-old 3,950-square-foot restaurant with a larger one to accommodate the growing consumer demand. Chain reps are billing the proposed 6,110-square-foot restaurant as the "latest greatest prototype Chick-fil-A has" in its system. Chick-fil-A said the bigger restaurant, proposed for an empty lot about a half-mile down the road, is expected to contain cars within two double drive-thru lanes that wrap the restaurant. It also has plans to build an elevated restaurant that has four drive-thru lanes that flow below the store.

Some within the party have complained that Harris is endangering the odds for victory at the ballot box this year. Happily, the Biden campaign seems to finally be coming around and embracing smart ways to make the best use of Harris’ talents and impressive resume. Her outreach will be particularly important among young voters. Harris’ portfolio of reproductive rights, voting rights and discrimination in education is tailor-made to appeal to this cadre of voters. The 2020 ticket of Biden and Harris stemmed the reclamation and retribution movement of Trumpism.

Like many sectors, the consumer discretionary sector has enjoyed a strong year, rallying more than 16% in 2023. Against this backdrop, one sector to watch is consumer discretionary. With this view in mind, I am looking to put on a bearish options trade on the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR fund (XLY) , which tracks the performance of the S & P 500 consumer discretionary sector. The broad monster rally which started in November has shown no signs of stalling yet, but it will eventually. We'll present an options trade here to capitalize on that sector rotation, specifically how to bet against an industry likely to see outflows. If the healthcare sector keeps pulling back, most of the stocks in this sector will also tend to pull back. This is a lot of money for a mere $600 potential profit. Since I am paying a debit to buy the $420 call, it also reduces my profit potential to $155.

The Global Cooling Pledge would mark the world's first collective focus on energy emissions from the cooling sector. That would equal one-tenth of expected global emissions, the report said, and would strain electric grids. Organizers hope to see at least 80 countries supporting the cooling pledge, given the urgent need to slash climate-warming emissions and keep people safe from dangerous heatwaves. Nearly three-quarters of the potential for reducing cooling emissions by mid-century can be found in G20 countries, the UNEP report said. UNEP estimates that global efforts to tackle cooling emissions could avoid the release of up to 78 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

One witness — and documenter — of this trend is Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Kevin Cooley, who has spent the last decade capturing images of fire — both wild and controlled. The photographs are a visual statement about “our desire to control nature.”But lately, Cooley finds himself drawn to a different element, with lower risks. At the same time, California was in the middle of an extreme drought, which sparked his interesting in photographing water. Using flashlights, strobe lights and even drones, Cooley takes long exposure photos of the ocean that illuminate the tides, and ebb and flow of the current, he said. Baton Rouge-based U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick issued a two-week extension Thursday afternoon, giving lawmakers extra time to construct a congressional map, the American Civil Liberties Union confirmed to The Associated Press. Louisiana is among the list of states still wrangling over congressional districts after the U.S. Supreme Court in June ruled that Alabama had violated the Voting Rights Act. Republicans say the map is fair and argue that Black populations in the state are too dispersed to be united into a second majority Black district. Another mostly Black district could deliver a second congressional seat to Democrats. In June 2022, Dick struck down Louisiana’s map for violating the Voting Rights Act.

Why Adults Are More Imaginative Than Children
  + stars: | 2023-12-02 | by ( Andrew Shtulman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
The idea that children are imaginative but adults are not is a popular theme in children’s literature. “Do you really mean we won’t be able to hear that when we’re older?” asks one of the children. “You’ll hear all right,” explains Mary Poppins, “but you won’t understand.”In these stories, children are open to possibilities that elude the adult mind. They grasp extraordinary ideas that adults cannot fathom and have clever insights that adults do not appreciate. Children play elaborate make-believe games with their toys and role-playing games with their peers.

CNN —It’s the ‘leaning tower’ that has stood tipsily – but steadily – for nearly 1,000 years. But now, the days of the Garisenda tower in Bologna, Italy, could be numbered. Following investigations last month, the city is instigating a civil protection plan for the “sudden and unexpected collapse of the tower,” which has dominated the Bologna skyline since the 12th century. The Garisenda leans at an angle of four degrees – only a little more upright than the Leaning Tower of Pisa’s five degrees. “The overall situation has unfortunately worsened considerably, with worrying implications for the overall stability of the tower,” reads the report.

As they drove up to the house on a winding dirt road lined with lambs and donkeys, Borromeo says, “we looked at each other and we were like, ‘Oh no, we’re in trouble.’” They were immediately charmed. “It was a project.” Even though the 50-year-old building needed work — it had been unoccupied for a decade — the couple knew they’d discovered something worth preserving. In 1973, following a trip to Tokyo, the Italian poet Gianni Malabarba and his wife, both influential art collectors, had hired a local landscape designer to construct a weekend home inspired by their time abroad. The result is an Italian dwelling in the Japanese vernacular that would make as much sense in Kyoto as it would in California. Although they added a fireplace in the living room and redivided the rooms, they were careful, as Ferri says, “to keep the spirit alive.” But, says Borromeo, “we changed basically everything.”
