A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s South West Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. The South West Heritage Trust's curator of archaeology, Amal Khreisheh, holds one of the uncovered Norman pennies. The coins were likely to have been buried for safekeeping, a common method in the 11th century. That they were never dug up by their owner suggests to historians that they may have been lost or abandoned because of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest.

CNN —Police in Poland have launched an investigation after a collection of more than 100 Bronze Age artifacts surfaced unexpectedly in the northwest of the country. The discovery came to light when photos of the artifacts, including weapons, bronze spearheads, necklaces and shield bosses, were shared with the Provincial Heritage Protection Office in the city of Szczecin, according to a statement from the West Pomeranian Police, published Friday. The historical association then handed the artifacts over to the Provincial Heritage Protection Office in Szczecin, which reported a crime of finding treasure without permission. More than 90 flights from Indian airports have received bomb threats in just over a week, including about 50 on Saturday and Sunday alone, according to local media reports. However, economists at Goldman Sachs in a Monday note forecast rate cuts "notably below market pricing." As a result, they see consecutive 25 basis point cuts taking the Bank Rate to 3% as early as September 2025, and to 2.75% in November next year. "Recent data have cemented expectations of another cut in interest rates in November. "That said, uncertainty around the economic outlook is high, and interest rate expectations will be sensitive to what the government announces in the Budget," Muir added.

LONDON — The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday raised its 2024 growth outlook for the United Kingdom, saying declines in interest rates and inflation would boost domestic demand. The IMF now sees 1.1% growth for the U.K. economy this year, up from a July forecast of 0.7%. Inflation in the U.K. came in at 1.7% in September, a decline from 11.1% in October 2022. Economic growth has been tepid so far this year, coming in at 0.2% in August after flatlining in June and July.

London CNN —A hoard of Norman-era silver coins unearthed five years ago in southwestern England has become Britain’s most valuable treasure find ever, after it was bought for £4.3 million ($5.6 million) by a local heritage trust. The coins date from one of the most turbulent periods in English history. “The hoard was buried in around 1067-1068 on an estate in Chew Valley which later belonged to Giso, the Bishop of Wells. We think it was probably buried for safekeeping during the time of rebellions against William in the South West. Finding coins that were in use almost 1,000 years ago is exceptionally rare – this hoard contains twice as many coins from during Harold II’s reign as had previously been found.

The prolonged nationwide blackout that followed a massive outage Thursday night was part of countrywide energy problems that led to the largest protests in Cuba in almost 30 years, in July 2021. The Cuban government on state television Monday night said that it's producing 1300 megawatts when peak demand can hit 3 gigawatts. He said that Oscar would bring "an additional inconvenience" to Cuba's recovery since it would affect key Cuban power plants, such as Felton in the city of Holguín, and Renté in Santiago de Cuba. The blackout was considered to be Cuba's worst since Hurricane Ian hit the island as a Category 3 storm in 2022 and damaged power installations.

The U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who built a powerful Islamic movement in Turkey and beyond but spent his later years mired in accusations of orchestrating an attempted coup against Turkish leader Reccep Tayyip Erdogan, has died. Since the failed coup, his movement has been systematically dismantled in Turkey and its influence has declined internationally. Soon after the 2016 coup, Erdogan described Gulen’s network as traitors and “like a cancer”, vowing to root them out wherever they are. The Turkish government said its actions were justified by the gravity of the threat posed to the state by the coup. Gulen had travelled to the United States for medical treatment but remained there as he faced a criminal investigation in Turkey.
