NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden's reelection campaign is getting some big-name fundraising help Monday from Broadway’s top stars. Both Biden and first lady Jill Biden will attend the event, with tickets ranging from $250 to $7,500. Since at least Bill Clinton, Democratic presidents have cultivated intimate ties with powerful figures in the Hollywood entertainment industry. Biden himself raised roughly $1 million during an early 2020 campaign fundraiser at the home of Michael Smith and James Costos, a former HBO executive. That event was attended by former DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, now a Biden campaign co-chair.

The Writers Guild of America, which represents more than 11,000 television and film writers, and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which bargains for studios, have not held talks for three weeks. “This was the companies’ plan from the beginning — not to bargain, but to jam us,” guild leaders said shortly afterward. The studios have rejected that demand, but it is a position supported by many Writers Guild members, including numerous showrunners. “We’re just always trying to see if there are any ways anybody can help.”Behind the scenes, however, frustration among elite Writers Guild members has been mounting. Mr. Murphy set up a financial assistance fund for idled workers on his shows and committed $500,000 as a starting amount.

New York CNN —McDonald’s is getting rid of one its biggest perks. The fast food chain is eliminating its self-serve soda machines by 2032 at its US restaurants, the company said, explaining that the change is will make the experience consistent for customers and crew across the chain. For decades, McDonald’s let customers fill (and refill) their own drinks at its dining rooms. McDonald’s future includes restaurant designs with smaller or no dining rooms (and high-tech drive thrus) to reflect that new reality. The chain also recently teased another major change, called “CosMc’s,” a new small-format location that includes a reduced dining area.

In the meantime, the Biden campaign plans to focus its message on warnings about Trump — which campaign officials hope will energize the party's grassroots and spur more donations. Some campaign officials see an opportunity for an influx of contributions when Trump's legal trials begin. A Biden campaign official who softened expectations for the coming fundraising disclosure said Republican candidates may have also had a slow summer. The Biden campaign will try to galvanize rank-and-file Democrats with new merchandise and ways for contributors to "engage" with the president, two sources said. Recently the Biden campaign began a fundraising contest to win dinner with Biden and former President Barack Obama.

Local legend has it that Elmwood is a favorite visiting place of extraterrestrials and U.F.O.s, a reputation that inspired the name of the annual festival. The stories go back many decades. One of Elmwood’s most infamous stories is the one about the police officer George Wheeler, whose squad car is said to have been hit with some kind of blue light from a U.F.O. one night in 1976. Six months later, Wheeler was dead, as reported in Howard Blum’s 1990 book, “Out There: The Government’s Secret Quest for Extraterrestrials.”

Jeff Daniels has accomplished a lot battling boredom. Before he moved to New York in 1976, he bought a guitar to play when he wasn’t getting work. After he moved back to Michigan in the 1980s, he started getting bored between movie jobs, so he formed the Purple Rose Theater Company. The Trade Desk will start undercutting the fees publisher adtech firms tack on to digital ads. The adtech used by publishers often inaccurately prices their inventory, said a Trade Desk exec. Adtech firm The Trade Desk is about to execute a plan to lower the price advertisers pay for digital ads. The Trade Desk operates software called a "demand-side platform" that advertisers use to buy ads across the internet. While other DSPs occasionally send low-ball bids, publishers might be more willing to look at The Trade Desk's bids due to the large amount of advertisers using its platform.

Jenkins denied a motion by McDonald's and Kempczinski to dismiss Peaster's race discrimination and retaliation claims. The judge did dismiss claims that McDonald's had created a hostile work environment and intentionally caused Peaster emotional distress. Carmen Caruso, a lawyer for Peaster, said he looks forward to bringing the surviving claims to trial. At a 2021 meeting at McDonald's corporate headquarters, Peaster, the company's vice president of global safety, security, and intelligence, said Kempczinski's response to the incident had been insufficient. Peaster claims that following the meeting, Kempczinski and other executives retaliated against him by refusing to meet with him and making it impossible for him to do his job.

The move escalates a dispute between the two e-cigarette makers after Juul filed a similar patent infringement case against NJOY at the ITC in June. NJOY said in its filings that Juul products infringe two of its patents, and that it intends to obtain a ban on products including its currently marketed Juul device and Juul pods. NJOY also sued Juul in Delaware on Tuesday for infringing the same patents, seeking an unspecified amount of damages. Juul filed its own patent lawsuits against NJOY and Altria at the ITC and in Arizona federal court in June, seeking money damages and a ban on imports of NJOY's Ace vapor device. Altria won more than $95 million from cigarette rival R.J. Reynolds in North Carolina federal court last year after a jury found RJR infringed other Altria e-cigarette patents.

"The focus for investors in this space is very different than what it was a couple years ago. The financial headwinds faced by rocket startups have triggered pain elsewhere as well.
