“This race is quickly consolidating,” said GOP fundraiser Charles Moran, a Trump delegate in 2016 and 2020. California was home to the so-called Trump resistance during his time in office, and Trump often depicts California as representing all he sees wrong in America. That created a competitive environment where Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi ’s district in San Francisco awarded the same number of GOP delegates as a rural, conservative heartland district. The state party — strongly influenced by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield, a Trump loyalist — “shifted everything to help Donald Trump,” Fleishman said. The California rules are expected to be challenged at a state party convention next week, though reversing course is seen as unlikely.

Charles McGonigal, a former FBI official who has been charged with working for sanctioned Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, arrives at Federal Court in New York City, U.S., March 8, 2023. Charles McGonigal, who led the FBI’s counterintelligence division in New York before retiring in 2018, is scheduled to appear at a plea hearing in Washington federal court at 2 p.m. (1800 GMT). He pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in federal court in Manhattan last month in a separate case related to his work for Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska while Deripaska was under U.S. sanctions. McGonigal’s lawyer and a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington declined to comment ahead of the hearing. Independent proxy advisory firms Glass Lewis & Co and ISS had recommended a vote in favor of the sale. Magellan, in its proxy, cautions that the merger is not conditioned on the compensation vote and that if the acquisition is approved, the executive compensation is payable. Michael Mears, Magellan's previous chief executive officer, also would receive about $26.5 million in equity, while the company's current chief commercial officer and general council will receive multi-million dollar packages. Magellan, however, said it expects ONEOK to consider the outcome of the compensation vote, along with other factors, when considering future executive pay.

Italy's Meloni seeks EU mission to block migrant arrivals

LAMPEDUSA, Italy, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on Friday for the European Union to act jointly "with a naval mission if necessary" to prevent migrants crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa. Meloni posted a video message on social media promising tough action in response to a surge in migrant arrivals this week which have overwhelmed the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa. "I intend to reiterate a request for an immediate EU mission to block the departure of migrant boats," said Meloni, for whom the swelling number of arrivals has become a major political headache. I met Sarah Collins Rudolph, a small woman nestled into a corded khaki sofa, last month in her darkened living room in Birmingham, Ala. The room is something of a shrine, commemorating the 1963 act of terror that killed four little girls but spared a fifth. She was that fifth little girl. She survived the Ku Klux Klan bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham 60 years ago. In the years leading up to that attack, white terrorists, raging against integration, were detonating bombs in Birmingham so often that the city earned an ignominious nickname: Bombingham.

NEW DELHI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - The European Union castigated Russia on Saturday for its "cynicism" in pulling out of the Black Sea grain deal, saying the offer of a million tons of grain to African countries was a "parody of generosity". "And what cynicism ... you did not accept this," Michel said in comments on the grain deal he directed at the Russian summit representative, Moscow's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. "Not only have you decided to pull out of this agreement on the Black Sea, but at the same time you are attacking the port infrastructure," he said. "You are blocking the ports that give access to the Black Sea, and even to the Danube." "What cynicism and contempt for African countries," he said, adding that the Black Sea deal had delivered exports of more than 30 million tons so far, chiefly to the most vulnerable nations.

London CNN —It will be a bittersweet day for Britain’s royal family Friday as they mark not only the first year of King Charles III’s reign but the one-year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. Charles is currently in Balmoral – the beloved royal property in Aberdeenshire where his mother retreated annually for a summer break. The Prince and Princess of Wales viewed the floral tributes to the Queen at Sandringham, September 15, 2022. The pair will then meet people from the local community – some of whom previously met Queen Elizabeth II during various visits to the city. For several royal experts, the King has used the past 12 months to blend the two reigns and strengthen the monarchy.

Colorful Ring Nebula shines in new Webb images

CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has revealed colorful new portraits of the iconic Ring Nebula. Webb previously captured a different perspective on the Ring Nebula, as well as the similar-looking Southern Ring Nebula. A longtime favorite of astronomers, the Ring Nebula has been studied for years due to its observability and the insight it can provide into the lifetime of stars. Messier and astronomer Darquier de Pellepoix discovered the Ring Nebula in 1779. As the dying star was throwing off its atmosphere, the companion star shaped the outflow and sculpted it.”

In a crowded debate, you can tell which candidates are seen as the greatest threat because they take the most incoming fire from their rivals. Watching the DeSantis campaign collapse has been an extraordinarily edifying spectacle. Trump endorsed DeSantis for governor of Florida when DeSantis was struggling against a strong Republican opponent for the party’s nomination. So, there was always something in the DeSantis campaign that knew that he was Macbeth coming to kill his king. He lacks the courage, which is ironic given that DeSantis wrote a book before his run entitled, “The Courage to Be Free.”
