South Carolina's primary was the first official nominating contest for Democrats, who – egged on by Biden – moved the state up in the primary schedule. But buoyed by Black voters – especially Black women – Biden earned nearly half of the primary vote in South Carolina in a five-way race, propelling him ultimately to the Democratic nomination. Despite the expected primary victory in South Carolina, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made a concerted effort to campaign there, visiting the Palmetto State the last two weekends. Harris also visited South Carolina three times since the beginning of the year, speaking at college campuses about student debt relief and abortion rights. Further, 76.5% of the early vote was made up of Black voters, 13% higher than in 2020, he added.

Haley laid out a stinging character study of the former president in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday. Grouping Trump with President Joe Biden, she said it was “absurd” that the country would be stuck with two 80-year-old candidates. In recent campaign events, Haley has also questioned Trump’s morality and capacity to tell right from wrong. They had to find a way to exploit Trump’s greatest general election liabilities in the knowledge that most Republican voters had no interest in hearing about them. South Carolina state Rep. Bill Taylor hit back at some of Haley’s recent criticisms that Trump only thinks of himself.

☆ Trump Sees Diminishing Fundraising Returns From Combative Court Appearances

On Dec. 7, when Trump appeared in a Manhattan court for a civil fraud trial, his main fundraising group reported taking in around $200,000 in online contributions. The recent slowdown suggests Trump is getting diminishing returns from his legal problems as he closes in on his Republican Party's nomination to face Democratic incumbent Joe Biden in the Nov. 5 election. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the apparent fundraising slowdown. SLOWDOWNThe smaller daily hauls around Trump's legal problems in late 2023 were part of a broader slowdown in his campaign's fundraising. Trump's legal problems are also showing increasing signs of being a direct drag on the finances of his election effort.

Save America was once so flush with cash that Trump’s political operation used its money to seed a super PAC, MAGA Inc., that advertises in support of his presidential campaign. But as Trump’s legal bills have grown and its cash dwindled, Save America clawed back more than $42 million in refunds from the super PAC last year. The super PAC supporting her candidacy, SFA Fund, spent more freely. Its year-end report shows that the group raised $50.2 million and spent $63.7 million between July and December. The substantial burn rate left the super PAC with just $3.5 million in cash on hand entering 2024.
