Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China's Ministry of Finance press briefing over the weekend underscored how it is focused on tackling local government debt problems, instead of the stimulus markets have been waiting for. In his opening remarks on Saturday, Minister of Finance Lan Fo'an laid out four measures, starting with increasing support for local governments in resolving debt risks. China's real estate market slump has cut into a significant source of revenue for local governments, many of which struggled financially even before needing to spend on Covid-19 measures. He added that a large plan to address local governments' hidden debt would be announced in the near future, without specifying when. Historically, local governments were responsible for more than 85% of expenditure but only received about 60% of tax revenue, Rhodium Group said in 2021.

The Trump campaign taps Lara Trump to encourage voters to vote early and by mail Earlier this year, the RNC co-chair voiced a robocall falsely alleging massive fraud occurred in the 2020 election due to mail ballots. Last month, at a rally in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Trump disparaged early voting, and promoted it, in the same breath. … Whether you vote early, absentee, by mail or in person, we’re going to protect the vote.”The Republican parties in Arizona and Nevada also tapped Lara Trump to voice robocalls promoting early and mail voting, despite previously echoing her father-in-law’s rhetoric on early voting. “So, get out there, encourage others to vote early and remind them just how critical this election is. When we vote, we win.”Lara Trump encourages Nevada voters to vote early and by mail The Nevada Republican Party tapped Lara Trump to encourage Nevadans to vote early and by mail.

"Šimonytė and the entire Homeland Union looks battered, worn out and they would better spend some time on the spare bench." But the measures that Beijing’s economic planning agency announced this week proved to be an anticlimax — the trillions of yuan that observers were hoping would be revealed never materialized. Beijing might even miss its annual growth target of 5% — a figure it often surpassed prior to the pandemic. But while Chinese officials project confidence, the markets and the country’s public seem less convinced. Its broader financial lethargy and this week’s market turmoil will hardly be welcomed by Beijing. But Putin is not the only foreign leader Trump is talking to. And it is hardly unusual for a presidential nominee to begin holding some talks with foreign leaders. After the first attempt to assassinate Trump, in July, foreign leaders quickly moved to offer him their well-wishes. Trump has hosted Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and former British Prime Minister David Cameron when he was the U.K.’s foreign secretary. Katulis was referring to the trove of classified documents Trump kept from his time in office that have become the subject of a criminal case, many of them about his communications with foreign leaders.

This comes two weeks after Hurricane Helene significantly damaged communities like Asheville, North Carolina, hundreds of miles inland, that were seemingly immunized from the worst effects of climate change. Treating climate change as a national security problem is not a liberal position but a hardheaded realist one. This framing of national security also endured after the 9/11 attacks. After Hurricane Milton, Americans should ask themselves: Are they safer now from threats like climate change and pandemics? And if not, isn’t it time for a real discussion of what truly constitutes national security to begin?

Beijing Reuters —China will “significantly increase” government debt issuance to offer subsidies to people with low incomes, support the property market and replenish state banks’ capital as it pushes to revive sputtering economic growth. “There is still relatively big room for China to issue debt,” he said. Reuters reported last month that China plans to issue special sovereign bonds worth about 2 trillion yuan ($284.43 billion) this year as part of fresh fiscal stimulus. Separately, Bloomberg News reported that China is also considering injecting up to 1 trillion yuan ($142 billion) of capital into its biggest state banks to increase their capacity to support the economy, primarily by issuing new sovereign bonds. Swedish furniture retailer Ikea, whose 39 stores in China have felt the spillovers from the property crisis, urged Beijing on Thursday to deploy further stimulus.

Citing a Trump aide, Woodward also reported that there have been “maybe as many as seven” calls between Trump and Putin since Trump left the White House in 2021. However, prices for many physical goods have deflated as supply-and-demand dynamics return to normal following pandemic-era contortions. "Outside of goods prices, I don't think we'll see price cuts," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's. That served to weaken demand, which also pushed down prices, economists said. Outside of supply-demand dynamics, the U.S. dollar's strength relative to other global currencies has also helped rein in prices for imported goods, economists said. Energy, food and consumer electronicsOutside of imported goods, consumers may also see a "normalization" of prices in food and energy, Zandi said.

South Korea's central bank has cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.25%, the first rate cut from the BOK since the Federal Reserve started tightening its monetary policy in March 2022. This was in line with a poll of economists from Reuters, who forecasted a rate cut. At that time, South Korea's inflation stood at 2.6%, but climbed sharply to hit 6.3% in July 2022, its highest in over 20 years. Oh noted that macro conditions are supportive of a rate cut, with a "favourable" inflationary backdrop. Oh predicts that after the October cut of 25 basis points, three more consecutive cuts will follow on a quarterly basis, eventually bringing the BOK's benchmark interest rate to 2.5%.

CNN —Prospective homebuyers waiting on the sidelines for a further drop in mortgage rates received unwelcome news on Thursday. The average rate on a standard, 30-year fixed mortgage was 6.32% in the week ending October 10, mortgage financing provider Freddie Mac said Thursday. It was the largest one-week increase in mortgage rates since April and the second straight week rates jumped higher after falling to a two-year low last month. Soon after, the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage fell to its lowest since September 2022 at 6.08%. The recent bounce in mortgage rates underscores the uneven path toward greater home affordability.

Hong Kong CNN —Global investors went wild during China’s just-concluded Golden Week holiday by snapping up “everything” related to the country. But that optimism didn’t extend to shoppers and travelers in the world’s second-largest economy itself. “Low tourism spending per head and subdued services prices highlighted still weak domestic demand and continued consumption downgrading,” they said. Goldman Sachs added that anecdotal evidence indicates hotel prices and airfares during the holiday were lower than year-ago levels. According to official data, cross-border travel rose by about 26% to 13 million trips, compared with last year’s holiday period.

New York CNN —Last year, Ikea slashed prices on roughly 2,000 products to give inflation-weary customers a break. Ikea, the world’s largest furniture retailer, said that it doesn’t have any regrets about prioritizing “lowering the prices” in a $2 billion discount initiative at all of its stores globally. Like its rivals, Ikea gradually hiked prices since the peak of Covid-19 in 2020 as the costs of materials and transport rose. The company’s major discount program last year cut prices on several of its most popular items, like its Billy bookcase. Ikea sold 1.2 billion meatballs for the year, with a company spokesperson telling CNN that it also sold more meals at its cafés.

While Harris has gained ground on stewardship of the economy, Trump still leads in most surveys about the issue, which frequently ranks as the top concern for voters. The Harris campaign and Democratic allies believe she must erode that advantage and at least fight it to a draw. The economic issue is still Trump’s core advantage and one of the only reasons this race is as close as it is.”Still, Harris is performing better than Biden did on the economy against Trump. “People almost always say ‘I hate him but,’ or ‘I like him and’ — ‘but he did a good job on the economy,’ ‘the economy is better under him,’” she said.

CNN —Covid-19 could be a powerful risk factor for heart attacks and strokes for as long as three years after an infection, a large new study suggests. What’s more, for people who needed to be hospitalized, Covid appeared to be as potent a risk factor for future heart attacks and strokes as diabetes or peripheral artery disease, or PAD.
