In October 2023, Soni Mehra left her Big Tech job to focus on her own home decor business. I was accustomed to working with larger teams in Big Tech, so I've had to get used to balancing multiple tasks. Thankfully, I can rely on savings from my prior Big Tech roles. I no longer make the same salary as I did in Big Tech, but still prioritize spending money on things my partner and I value, like travel. People ask me if I'd ever return to Big Tech.

Coinbase Global's latest earnings were even weaker than expected, but with an eye toward next week's election and its effect on cryptocurrency markets, many analysts on Wall Street say the exchange is still a buy. Coinbase also warned that an October drop in the price of ether could offset growth in nontrading revenue in the current quarter. Coinbase tumbled as much as 8.6% in early trading Thursday, touching a low of $193.56. The election outcome at one point was widely viewed as a key catalyst for the price of bitcoin. On the earnings call, CEO Brian Armstrong said he expects to see "the most pro-crypto Congress ever" next year.

There could be additional upside to bitcoin and gold if former President Trump emerges victorious in next week's election, according to JPMorgan. Spot bitcoin ETFs saw $1.3 billion of new investor money in the first two days of this week, Panigirtzoglou noted. Meme and AI-related tokens are also outperforming the overall crypto market in another measure of retail investors' aniumal spirits. Bitcoin futures have become "rather overbought" and could face vulnerability "going forward." The picture is similar for gold, where retail investors continue to buy gold ETFs while activity in gold futures shows a pause.

An Australian one dollar coin sits atop a United States one dollar bill in this illustration photo taken February 12, 2016. The dollar hovered close to a three-month peak on Wednesday in a big week for macroeconomic data that could reveal the path for U.S. monetary policy. The Australian dollar edged closer to a three-month trough after some stickiness in inflation suggested a Reserve Bank of Australia interest rate cut is unlikely this year. The ADP employment report is due later in the day, ahead of the potentially crucial monthly payrolls report on Friday. Standard Chartered on Wednesday upgraded its 2024 income guidance as it posted profits in the third quarter that beat expectations, driven by record performance in its wealth management business. After its second quarter earnings report, Standard Chartered in July announced its largest-ever share buyback of $1.5 billion. Standard Chartered said its operating expenses rose 3% to $2.9 billion caused by inflation and business expansion efforts, although efficiency savings did offset some costs. The London-headquartered bank also lifted its 2024 income guidance on Wednesday with operating income to increase towards 10% in 2024. In July, the bank had upgraded the operating income projection to more than 7%, from 5% to 7%.

Swiss banking titan UBS on Wednesday posted a large profit beat, after completing its first wave of client migrations following its integration of collapsed domestic rival Credit Suisse. Net profit attributable to shareholders came in at $1.43 billion, compared with a mean forecast of $667.5 million in a LSEG poll of analysts. UBS defends it is not "too big to fail." UBS still faces the lofty tasks of integrating its IT system with that of Credit Suisse, along with migrating clients — with the latter transition set to take around 18 months, Reuters reported earlier this month. The UBS results come after the profit beat of Germany's largest lender Deutsche Bank last Wednesday and join this week's spate of third-quarter reports from European lenders, including from BNP Paribas and Santander.

With bitcoin approaching a major breakout attempt and new all-time highs, it continues to attract all of the attention and rightly so. While it may seem like ether has been out of favor for a considerable length of time, it's not anything different than we've seen before over the years. Overall, there have been five relative phases – with the other two being the times when ETH outperformed BTC. But we've seen it before. Every time is different, but we've now seen bitcoin and ETH leverage technical patterns for nearly a decade now.
