"Increasing geopolitical risk in the Middle East should support oil prices ... higher volatility can be expected" analysts from ANZ Bank said in a client note. An increase in Saudi output would have helped to relieve supply tightness after months of supply cuts from key producers Saudi Arabia and Russia. A normalisation of Saudi-Israeli relations would likely freeze recent moves toward detente between Saudi Arabia and Iran. "For this conflict to have a lasting and meaningful impact on oil markets, there must be a sustained reduction in oil supply or transport," Vivek Dhar, an analyst at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said in a note. The Powerball jackpot soared to an estimated $1.4 billion as of Oct. 6, 2023, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. The Powerball jackpot has soared to an estimated $1.4 billion ahead of Saturday night's drawing — and financial experts have tips for the lucky winner. As the third-largest prize in the game's history, the winner will pick between a lump sum worth $614 million or an annuitized prize of $1.4 billion. The biggest pitfalls for lottery winners are excessive spending, poor investment choices and family members asking for money, said Andrew Stoltmann, a Chicago-based lawyer who has represented several lottery winners. "Saying 'no' to family might be the toughest thing that lottery winners have to do," he said.

When official interest rates rise, so do investors’ expectations for returns on bonds, known as yields. In the United Kingdom, the yield on 30-year bonds also reached 5% this week, the highest level in more than two decades. Yields on Italy’s 10-year bonds hit 5% on Wednesday, the highest level since 2012, when that crisis was in full swing. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Zac Gallen settled down after a shaky start and Arizona’s bullpen stepped up at the very end, helping the Diamondbacks sweep their NL Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 5-2 victory in Game 2 on Wednesday night. Just two years after suffering through a 110-loss season, Arizona moved into the franchise's first NL Division Series since 2017. The Diamondbacks will take on the NL West champion Dodgers in the opener of their best-of-five series on Saturday in Los Angeles. The NL Central champion Brewers have dropped nine of their last 10 playoff games, a stretch that started with their Game 7 home loss to the Dodgers in the 2018 NL Championship Series. Brandon Woodruff had been regarded as the Brewers’ likely Game 2 starter until a shoulder injury shut him down for this series.

The Powerball jackpot hit $1.2 billion on Oct. 3, 2023, the third-biggest prize in the game's history. Scott Olson | GettyThe Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $1.2 billion — the third-largest prize in the game's history — without a winner Monday night. Among the winner's big decisions will be the choice between a lump sum payout worth $551.7 million or an annuitized prize of $1.2 billion. The lump sum payout is 'a mistake'"Virtually everybody who wins the lottery picks the lump sum distribution," said Andrew Stoltmann, a Chicago-based lawyer who has represented several lottery winners. While the lump sum payout could be a good financial move for some winners, he agreed that others may benefit from the spending guardrails of annuitized payments.

Photo: Fine Art/Getty ImagesEarlier this year the U.S. surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, issued a report on “loneliness and isolation” in America. Loneliness, Dr. Murthy explained, is a mental phenomenon. Isolation, by contrast, is a physical experience, arising when we are prevented, as during the pandemic, from being in the actual presence of family and friends. Either form of solitude, physical or mental, can increase the risk of everything from cardiovascular disease to diabetes to depression. And, Dr. Murthy says, we are facing an epidemic.

Australia is working with the US and UK to build nuclear-powered subs and other military technology. Pump jacks operate at sunset in an oil field in Midland, Texas U.S. August 22, 2018. REUTERS/Nick Oxford/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsTOKYO/BEIJING, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Oil prices fell on Tuesday amid concerns that fuel demand will be crimped by major central banks holding interest rates higher for longer, even with supply expected to be tight. Higher interest rates slow economic growth, which curbs oil demand. With China's Golden Week holiday starting from Sunday, oil prices could gain support from a pick-up in travel and resulting oil product demand from the world's second biggest oil consumer. Oil prices have risen by around 30% since mid-year driven mostly by tighter supply, wiping off 0.5 percentage points from the global GDP growth in the second half of this year, according to JP Morgan.

Biden in May rolled out a new policy to deter illegal crossings, including deporting migrants and banning re-entry for five years, as his administration grappled with migration at record highs. He praised Biden for creating legal pathways for migrants but said they needed to be expanded. Hundreds of migrants who crossed without appointments have been forced to wait between two border walls. Within the last eight days, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had processed more than 5,000 migrants in the San Diego area, a San Diego official said on Thursday. An unprecedented number of migrants entering Mexico hail from othercontinents, as the trek to the U.S. southern border increasingly becomes a global migration route.
