"We've got a real headwind from climate change," Zelman told Business Insider in late July. AdvertisementThe two hottest days in recorded history were earlier this week, according to the Europe-based Copernicus Climate Change Service. Most scientists say that's due to climate change caused by humans, but even if it's a coincidental pattern, the trend of rising temperatures is undeniable. AdvertisementMidwestern cities are destined to overtake the 'Sun Melt'During the "great reshuffling" of the pandemic, warmer states in the Sun Belt region were among the biggest beneficiaries. The widespread advent of remote work allowed millions of people to relocate, and many moved in droves to warmer states in the Southern US.

In June, the financial services company WalletHub ranked the 50 states and DC across three categories: economic activity, economic health, and innovation potential. The Economic Policy Institute pointed to low minimum wages and unionization rates in Southern states as two factors keeping pay down. Of course, workers in some Southern states earn less than others. Using US Bureau of Economic Analysis and Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the analysis highlighted the average annual wages across US states as of 2022. Only two Southern states — Louisiana and West Virginia — were among the eight US states that saw their populations decline between 2022 and 2023.

The 48 states also include the 15 states where former President Donald Trump, the Republicans’ 2024 nominee, had his highest share of the vote in 2020. Since Biden was never the official nominee, states say there’s no problem for HarrisThe election authorities in 48 states and the District of Columbia offered highly similar comments explaining why Harris does not face any hurdles getting on the ballot there. Chelsea Carattini, spokesperson for Republican Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane, said in an interview: “There’s no issue. It’s impossible to say for certain whether a particular court in a particular state might rule that the state’s elections authority was wrong. Any challenges after the convention would be challenges to a nominee who received the support of the convention delegates under convention rules.

Vice President Kamala Harris has forsworn direct donations from lobbyists, but they are welcoming her candidacy and finding other ways to support it. In the days since President Biden dropped his re-election campaign and Ms. Harris moved swiftly to lock up the Democratic Party’s nomination, Washington’s influence industry has quietly jockeyed to position itself with her team. They have briefed clients about her policy positions, the composition of her inner circle and the pool of possible running mates. Some lobbying firms have highlighted their connections to Ms. Harris, drawing the ire of allies seeking to avoid the perception that she is beholden to special interests. “Human nature is such that anybody that ever walked past somebody on the street would try to capitalize,” said former Senator Doug Jones, an Alabama Democrat who is close to Ms. Harris.

An Alabama man indicted for allegedly threatening election workers in Arizona has pleaded guilty to one count of sending interstate threats, federal prosecutors said. Brian Ogstad of Cullman, Alabama, was indicted by a federal grand jury in February after Maricopa County, Arizona, election workers reported receiving numerous threats from him via social media. Following the 2022 state primary in Arizona – which was marked by the proliferation of numerous conspiracy theories regarding the integrity of the electoral process – Ogstad sent direct messages to Maricopa County officials, including: “You did it! “We cannot allow threats of violence against public servants to become normalized. The FBI takes seriously all threats of violence against public officials and will continue to pursue threats and acts of violence aimed at election workers.”

California has very few shark attacks — just two recorded in 2023, fewer than New York and the Carolinas. The eastern coast from Virginia to New York doesn’t see many shark attacks, despite having many popular beach towns. Long Island in New York is, roughly speaking, the northern border of the bull and tiger shark ranges. Tiger Shark A 3D illustration of a Tiger Shark. Kentucky managed to rack up 12 shark attacks in 2006 after the aquarium in Newport opened a shark petting exhibit.

Read previewVice President Kamala Harris' campaign is in the process of choosing her running mate, and who she chooses will provide insight into her battle plan for November. With 20 electoral votes, winning the battleground state will likely be a crucial part of both former President Donald Trump and Harris' campaign. Choosing Shapiro, the state's governor, who has proven he can win in Pennsylvania, could significantly bolster Harris' ticket there, Gift said. Kevin Fahey, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Nottingham, agrees but told BI that a Shapiro pick may indicate some trepidation in Harris' campaign. Plus, he's already been an attack dog against Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, going after him for his Appalachian credentials.

San Juan (AP) — Puerto Rico’s governor signed a law on Wednesday that prohibits discrimination against people wearing Afros, curls, locs, twists, braids and other hairstyles in the racially diverse U.S. territory. The move was celebrated by those who had long demanded explicit protection related to work, housing, education and public services. “It’s a victory for generations to come,” Welmo Romero Joseph, a community facilitator with the nonprofit Taller Salud, said in an interview. A bronze statue of San Juan Bautista stands in front the Capitol building flanked by U.S. and Puerto Rican flags, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where a ruling was made on Wednesday to ban hair discrimination. “Unfortunately, people identified as Black or Afro descendant in Puerto Rico still face derogatory treatment, deprivation of opportunities, marginalization, exclusion and all kinds of discrimination,” the law signed Wednesday states.

This week, the benchmark Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) and the iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (ICLN) are down 6.2% and 4.6%, respectively. Residential solar stocks, including Enphase , Sunnova , Sunrun , SolarEdge and SunPower , would face a "severe impact" if Republicans successfully weaken or entirely repeal the IRA, according to Piper. The stock in the clean energy space with the least exposure to election risks is GE Vernova , according to a July slide deck from JPMorgan on clean energy. As a domestic manufacturer, First Solar potentially stands to benefit if the U.S. trade war with China intensifies under a Trump administration, according to Kallo. Though total IRA repeal may be unlikely, solar and clean energy stocks will "continue to be volatile until (and even after) the election due to headline risk," Kallo said.

This week, Republicans have tried to rewrite the four years of Trump’s presidency as a time of unparalleled peace, prosperity and tranquility: “the strongest economy in history,” as Senator Katie Britt of Alabama put it. “President Trump honored the Constitution,” said Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia offered Mr. Trump’s first term as an example of “common-sense conservative leadership.”The record of what Mr. Trump actually did in office bears little resemblance to that description. For Americans who may have forgotten that time, or pushed it from memory, we offer this timeline of his presidency. Mr. Trump’s first term was a warning about what he will do with the power of his office — unless American voters reject him.

CNN —Special counsel Jack Smith said Wednesday that he is appealing a judge’s decision to throw out the indictment against Donald Trump concerning his handling of classified documents. This means the shock ruling would be reviewed by judges from the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals based in Atlanta. Cannon in her ruling on Monday had said that Smith’s appointment as special counsel was unconstitutional, warranting the dismissal of the case against Trump. Her decision was at odds with the rulings of judges across the country that rejected attacks on the legality of special counsel appointments. Absent a move to speed the appeal in the Trump documents case, it will likely take several months for the appeal to play out in the Atlanta-based appeals court.
