The Biden administration is taking executive action to protect undocumented spouses of American citizens — a move that would shield about 500,000 immigrants from deportation. The White House announced the election-year policy Tuesday, framing it as "new action to keep families together." Lawmakers have been briefed on the plan and at least some have been invited to the White House for the announcement, sources said. The program would also make it easier for some undocumented immigrants to get a green card and a path to U.S. citizenship. Sources also say that the undocumented spouses would be allowed to obtain work permits on a case-by-case basis.

“Is this a political war to the knife?”I was not familiar with that term – “war to the knife” – but Bannon also recently used it in an interview with ex-Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Ousted from White House role in 2017Bannon’s tenure in Trump’s White House was relatively short; he was fired in August 2017, part of a major reorganization under then-chief of staff John Kelly, who was brought in to control a chaotic atmosphere. As chief strategist at the White House, Bannon was known for large whiteboards full of lists of priorities – things that still ring true in the priorities he outlined over the weekend. Courts, Congress and mismanagement kept Bannon and Trump from achieving many of these goals in Trump’s first term. Anticipating the potential for a second Trump term, there are any number of supporters who are mapping out how to make the most of it.

Pay transparency laws are on the rise nationwide, but so is the share of companies that use the ambiguous phrase "competitive salary" to describe what they'll pay. As of May, the phrase appeared in 3% of U.S. job postings on Indeed, up from 2.5% of postings at the same time last year, the employment website told CNBC Make It. It's a small but notable increase that reflects thousands of job posts with unclear pay ranges, according to Indeed. "But without further details in the job posting, the phrase puts the onus on the job seeker to know what a competitive pay range may look like." If you're applying to jobs without clear pay ranges, here are a few ways to discuss salary during the hiring process.

Shortly after Boeing’s chief executive, Dave Calhoun, took his seat, families who lost relatives in the 2018 and 2019 crashes of the company’s 737 Max 8 planes called out to him, demanding that he turn around and acknowledge them and the photos of their loved ones. Among those behind Mr. Calhoun were the parents and brother of Samya Rose Stumo, the 24-year-old who was killed in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines accident and the grandniece of Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate and former presidential candidate. Nearby sat the family of John Barnett, the former Boeing engineer and whistle-blower who died by suicide earlier this year in the midst of a Justice Department criminal investigation into the company. Others held photos of their loved ones lost in the crashes. “I would like to apologize, on behalf of all of our Boeing associates spread throughout the world, past and present, for your losses,” Mr. Calhoun said while facing the families.

Younger generations sometimes rely on family for financial support, but the opposite is also true. Gomez liquidated his assets and gave money to his dad to help pay off the loans. Hughes also sets aside some money each year for a fund to help other family members. "I would fund an account at the beginning of the year, and then if anyone in the family asked me to borrow money, it would come out of the family fund," Hughes said. Her husband, Charles Rogers, said she died in a hospital from complications of two recent heart attacks. In 1968, after leaving IBM, Ms. Conway was among the earliest Americans to undergo gender reassignment surgery. But she kept it a secret, living in what she called “stealth” mode for 31 years out of fear of career reprisals and concern for her physical safety. She rebuilt her career from scratch, eventually landing at the fabled Xerox PARC laboratory, where she again made important contributions in her field. After she publicly disclosed her transition in 1999, she became a prominent transgender activist.

Federal income tax refunds usually appear in bank accounts less than three weeks after the government accepts a return — unless you’re the victim of tax return identity theft. In that case, it often takes about two years. “That period of time is just ridiculous,” Erin M. Collins, who leads the service, said in an interview. For reasons not yet clear, Ms. Collins noted, many of those affected are lower-income tax filers, who often depend on tax refunds to cover basic living costs. Those filers often qualify for tax breaks for working families, like the earned-income tax credit, that can result in significant refunds.

The three-day in-office hybrid work schedule is a "win-win-win," according to a study published in the prestigious science journal Nature. Non-manager attrition for hybrid employees had a 2.4% rate, a one-third reduction from the control group of 7.2%. When managers measured employees in nine categories of performance, execution and results, hybrid employees succeeded at the same rate. By the end of the experiment, managers positively viewed hybrid work as a potential asset to the company rather than a detriment to productivity. From an economic policymaking standpoint, hybrid work is one of the few instances where there aren't major trade-offs with clear winners and clear losers.

Latinas face the steepest climb up the corporate ladder despite being as ambitious as their white peers, according to new research from Lean In. Latinas lag behind nearly all other major demographic groups in the executive ranks — white men and white women, Black men and women, even Latino men — comprising a mere 1% of C-suite executives at U.S. companies. A "broken rung" at the first critical step up to manager is still holding Latinas back from climbing the corporate ladder — for every 100 men promoted to manager, only 74 Latinas are promoted, Lean In reports. Latinas are less likely than white women and women overall to have their work highlighted to a leader or to have benefited from a sponsor action like being recommended for a promotion. Nearly half (44%) of Latinas say career growth has become more important to them in the last two years, compared with 32% of white women, Lean In reports.

Southern Baptists Vote to Oppose Use of I.V.F.

Southern Baptists, the country’s largest Protestant denomination, voted on Wednesday to oppose the use of in vitro fertilization. The vote was an indication that evangelicals are increasingly open to arguments that equate embryos with human life, and that two years after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, “fetal personhood” may be the next front for the anti-abortion movement. The vote on Wednesday was the first time that attendees at the Southern Baptist meeting have addressed the ethics of in vitro fertilization directly. The resolution proposed on Wednesday called on Southern Baptists “to reaffirm the unconditional value and right to life of every human being, including those in an embryonic stage, and to only utilize reproductive technologies consistent with that affirmation, especially in the number of embryos generated in the I.V.F. process.”It also exhorted them to “advocate for the government to restrain” actions inconsistent with the dignity of “every human being, which necessarily includes frozen embryonic human beings.”

Most of those efforts failed, but they have fueled harmful rhetoric around drag performers and the art form itself. Barbara Alper/Getty ImagesDrag has become increasingly visible in recent years through mainstream shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and popular public events such as drag brunches, drag bingo and drag queen story hours, in which drag performers read children’s books to young audiences, often at libraries. CNN —National security adviser Jake Sullivan on Sunday declined to say whether the US was comfortable with an Israeli hostage rescue mission that Gazan officials say killed more than two hundred. The Israeli military rescued four hostages in a special operation in the Nuseirat refugee camp, central Gaza, that Gazan authorities said killed 236 people and injured more than 400 others. An Israeli military spokesperson put the number of casualties from the operation at “under 100,” and had no information on how many of those were civilians. CNN previously reported that an American cell in Israel supported the efforts to rescue the four Israeli hostages, but Sullivan would not elaborate further. “The best way to get all of the hostages home and to protect Palestinian civilians is to end this war.

Right-wing parties across Europe have seen a surge in support over recent years and are set for record gains in the 2024 European Parliament elections. Meanwhile, an emboldened ID party could apply pressure on Parliament to alter its stance on other contentious issues. Here's a look at how these shifts could impact EU policy. "The incoming Commission and Parliament are likely to continue the trend towards greater protectionism and intervention in strategic industries, although the EU will remain an open, trade-dependent economy," they wrote. Elizabeth Warren, along with eight of her Democratic colleagues, were calling on Navient — a major private student-loan company — to cancel "decades-old predatory private student loans" under consumer protection law. While some borrowers have started to receive the application from Navient, Warren and her colleagues still urged the company to automate the process and give private borrowers the same relief federal borrowers may have already received. Still, Warren wrote on X that the process should not be "wildly confusing" — and all private borrowers who qualify for debt relief if they were defrauded should have no problem getting it.
