Jim Inhofe, a former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee who was one of the most vocal climate change deniers in the US Senate, has died, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Tuesday. Inhofe, 89, served in the US Senate from 1994 until he retired in 2023. “The people he served, a group much larger than the proud residents of the Sooner State, were better for it,” McConnell said in a statement. His relentless advocacy for American energy dominance unlocked new prosperity across the country. “If we wanted the government to work for the people, not against the people, it was up to us to make a change,” Inhofe said at the time.

The regulators wrote that the app billed itself as a “safe space” for teens but, in reality, preyed on them. The app, known as NGL, had been downloaded millions of times, according to the complaint. NGL deceptively hooked teens into subscribing to its premium service by sending them fake, anonymous messages and then promising to reveal the sender after they paid, said the complaint. Highlighting the groundbreaking nature of the NGL settlement, FTC Commissioner Andrew Ferguson described Tuesday’s action as a “novel” use of the agency’s legal powers. But, he argued, the public should not interpret the lawsuit to mean that it is illegal in general to market any anonymous messaging app to teens.

After an unprecedented three-year timeout on federal student loan payments because of the pandemic, millions of borrowers began repaying their debt when billing resumed late last year. That reality, along with court decisions that regularly upend the rules, has complicated the government’s efforts to restart its system for collecting the $1.6 trillion it is owed. At the end of March, six months after the hiatus ended, nearly 20 million borrowers were making their payments as scheduled. But almost 19 million were not, leaving their accounts delinquent, in default or still on pause, according to the latest Education Department data. “The nonpayment rate really is emblematic of a system that’s not doing its job,” said Persis Yu, the managing counsel for the Student Borrower Protection Center, an advocacy group.

A court ruled that borrowers on the SAVE income-driven repayment plan can get the new benefits set to go into effect in July, like lower payments, for the time being after a legal challenges blocked their implementation. The Education Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on the stay. This means that for now, the Education Department can continue working to implement the new SAVE provisions set to go into effect this July. For now, borrowers continue to await further guidance from the Education Department.
