A massive cargo ship burning off the coast of the Netherlands is igniting concerns over fire risks from electric vehicles. The Dutch Coast Guard said on its blog that 23 crew members were evacuated, but one person died. But the intensity of the fire seems to have diminished compared with yesterday," the Dutch Coast Guard said, per an AFP translation. Just 25 or less than 1% of the 2,857 vehicles on board the Fremantle Highway were electric vehicles. The Dutch Coast Guard did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

Formula E's Hughes sets indoor world speed record
  + stars: | 2023-07-28 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, July 28 (Reuters) - British Formula E driver Jake Hughes has smashed a world indoor speed record by hitting 218.71kph (135.9mph) inside London's ExCeL Centre in a modified version of the electric championship's Gen3 racecar. NEOM McLaren driver Hughes, who had three practice runs before his record attempt, warmed up with a run of 214.80kph before further runs of 215.05 and 217.65 through the speed trap. His record attempt was then clocked at 217.65kph. "I felt like I’ve never wanted anything more in my life than having a world record," he added. "It’s all about showcasing the potential of what an electric racing car can do," he told Reuters.

That risk has been put under the spotlight by the burning car carrier drifting off the Dutch coast. While all logistics companies deal with the risk of EV lithium-ion batteries burning with twice the energy of a normal fire, the maritime industry hasn't kept up with the developing technology and how it creates greater risk, maritime officials and insurers said. There were 209 ship fires reported during 2022, the highest number in a decade and 17% more than in 2021, according to a report from insurer Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) (ALVG.DE). The European Maritime Safety Agency said in a March report the main cargo types identified as responsible for "a large share of cargo fire accidents included ... lithium-ion batteries." Firemen typically put out EV battery fires on roadsides by clearing the area around the burning vehicle and flooding the underside with water, something difficult to do on a RoRo, Dillon said.

Now, companies like Form Energy, AtmosZero and a Silicon Valley-based startup called Antora Energy are tackling the challenge with more affordable battery technology. "Because of that we're able to store energy at much lower costs." Christina Karapataki of Breakthrough Energy Ventures, which was founded by Bill Gates, says this business could be particularly lucrative. There are now about a dozen thermal energy storage companies using sand, rock, brick or other types of ceramic to store energy as heat. The market for e-bike delivery has grown dramatically in the past few years. Here's how startups, delivery companies, and city governments are improving safety. The explosion of delivery startups and e-bikes in the past few years has led to a new type of boom: increasing battery fires. "E-bike batteries are made up of a bunch of small batteries stacked together," Charlie Welch, ZapBatt's cofounder and CEO, said. JOCOOther startups, such as Popwheels, are engineering safe batteries that are compatible with the e-bikes delivery drivers already own.

By adding bio-surfactants along with the other chemicals during the soaking process, more copper floats to the surface and less is wasted. A new aerospace company is building a rocket that could cut the travel time to Mars in half. UK-based aerospace company Pulsar Fusion is working to build a rocket powered by nuclear fusion that could reach speeds of 500,000 mph, the company announced. With current technology, NASA estimates it would take seven months to reach Mars, so about 30% of the total "safe" trip time would be wasted in transit. In response to a story about using nuclear rockets to reach Mars in 100 days, he said it was something NASA should be exploring, calling it a "great idea." Pulsar Fusion is looking to have a test firing of a rocket toward the end of this decade.

Opinion | A Climate Hawk’s Issues With Electric Vehicles

I get why the Biden administration is pushing electric vehicles so hard. To stop the planet from overheating, we’ll eventually need motor vehicles to produce zero greenhouse gas emissions, and only fully electric vehicles can do that. Hybrids, which have combustion engines along with electric motors, will always puff some carbon dioxide (and other bad stuff) out of their tailpipes. By Toyota’s calculation, the amount of rocks needed for one long-range electric vehicle would be enough for either six plug-in hybrids or 90 of the type of hybrid that can’t be plugged in for a recharge. “The overall carbon reduction of those 90 hybrids over their lifetimes is 37 times as much as a single battery electric vehicle,” Toyota argues.

Firefighters and other responders had been working to suppress the fire since Wednesday night, pumping water from Newark Bay onto the towering ship and its load of 1,200 vehicles. The persistence of the fire led to speculation that some of the cars on board were electric vehicles with lithium ion batteries. But Beth Rooney, the port director, said that the ship’s manifest indicated that there were no electric vehicles on it. She said that the ship had carried new electric vehicles to Baltimore before arriving in Newark, where it took on a load of “previously owned vehicles” bound for West Africa. Two Newark firefighters, Augusto Acabou, 45, and Wayne Brooks Jr., 49, died trying to knock the blaze down.

Despite talk of U.S.-China economic de-coupling, recent data show a trade relationship that is fundamentally solid, and rebounded in 2022 from five years of turmoil wrought by a trade war and COVID-19 disruptions. Two-way trade hit a record $690 billion last year as U.S. demand for Chinese consumer goods rose and Beijing's demand for U.S. farm products and energy grew. U.S.-China trade had fallen after 2018, when former President Donald Trump imposed tariffs of up to 25% on some $370 billion in Chinese imports, but began to rebound during the COVID recovery of 2021. Reuters Graphics"I think it is important that people realize that business and politics are separate," said Michael Hart, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in China. "The current state of U.S.-China trade and investment is the result of 30 to 40 years' worth of ongoing trade and investment."

CATL touts breakthrough in cold-weather EV charging

He said CATL would be able to mass produce a battery capable of delivering 400 kilometers of driving range with a 10-minute charge this year. The company aims to shorten that charge time to five to seven minutes for the same driving range as its next target, he said. Automakers and some suppliers have been racing to develop solid-state batteries that would offer greater power and increased driving range. Toyota (7203.T) said last month it had overcome an issue with the durability of solid-state batteries that would pave the way for production as soon as 2027. Wu said he was skeptical that solid-state batteries were ready for mass production and of the cost reduction claims.

Elon Musk’s secret game plan for Tesla

"Tesla is happy to support other EVs via our Supercharger network," Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted, replying to President Joe Biden's announcement. And by tapping into a vehicle's battery management system, Tesla may be able to get even more data from its competitors. There were jokes for years that Tesla was actually a carbon-credit company pretending to be a car company. For a while it looked as if it were going to be an insurance company pretending to be a car company. Now, I think it's going to be a data company — which may just be the thing that winds up keeping it afloat.

The comments by Shoichiro Watanabe of Panasonic Energy are the Tesla (TSLA.O) supplier's first clear indication of the number of additional factories it will need. "We will need to build around another four factories," Watanabe, the company's chief technology officer, said in an interview at its headquarters in Osaka on Friday. He signalled an openness to potential joint ventures for EV battery production, with automaker Mazda Motor (7261.T) among others, citing the changing nature of such projects in which investment is no longer shouldered by battery makers alone. Panasonic will not rule out the possibility of a joint battery venture with Mazda as part of a supply partnership the companies are working out, Watanabe said.
