Data points help tell the story of the people who live in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, and what their life was like before the current war. Large shares of the population in both Gaza and the West Bank are Palestinian refugees. Meanwhile, people born in Gaza today can expect to live for 75.7 years, and in the West Bank, 76.6 years. Religion and EthnicityThe vast majority of people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank are Muslims who predominantly practice Sunni Islam, though hundreds of thousands of Jewish Israelis have settled in the West Bank. Twice as many primary school-aged children were not in school in the West Bank and Gaza compared with Israel in 2021.

The West could live with a frozen Ukraine conflict
  + stars: | 2023-11-13 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Ukraine may be heading for a similarly frozen conflict with Russia. So a frozen conflict would help the West achieve – at least partly – its key geostrategic aim: to show hostile powers that it doesn’t pay to invade one of its friends. In a frozen conflict, Ukraine would still need to invest heavily in massive fortifications, anti-missile defence systems and technology to deter Russian attacks. ECONOMIC WARIn a frozen conflict, sanctions against Russia would probably remain more or less in place. REBUILDING UKRAINEIt will be harder to rebuild Ukraine’s infrastructure in a frozen conflict than if there was peace.

The photograph tells us nothing about whether or how these children are related. Hundreds of Israeli hostages, including children, are believed to be held in Gaza by Hamas, their families desperate for their safe release. It is a rare thing for mainstream news organizations to publish graphic images of dead or wounded children. There is nothing quite so devastating as the image of a child whose life has been snuffed out by senseless violence. And so the slaughter in Maine reminded me of another image from Gaza, one you may have seen on social media.

DETROIT (AP) — Stellantis said Monday it will offer buyout or early retirement packages to about 6,400 nonunion U.S. salaried employees as the auto industry faces what the company is calling challenging market conditions. Stellantis said it has about 12,700 U.S. salaried workers who are not union members. Stellantis made buyout offers to groups of white-collar and unionized employees in the U.S. and Canada in April. It was hoping to cut the hourly workforce by about 3,500 people but wouldn't say how many salaried workers it was targeting. But it said a 44-day strike by the United Auto Workers union this fall cost it $795 million (750 million euros).

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Earlier Monday, conservative commentator Steven Crowder released what he said were three images of Audrey Hale’s writings from the day of the March 27 shooting. The news quickly sparked calls for an investigation as local and state leaders initially declined to verify the authenticity of the writings. Because of the lawsuits, police have since said they would await the direction of the court on whether to release Hale’s writings. Bill Lee said he has been “calling for clarity” around the Covenant shooter's writings for months, saying in a statement that he's been “frustrated” by the lack of transparency.
