But China has been rocked by a number of high-profile stabbing cases in recent decades, including multiple such attacks at schools. These worries were clear on Chinese social media after the latest attacks, with several commentators connecting China’s dire economic circumstances to the violence, even as the attackers’ motives remained unclear. Read previewWhen Morgan Stanley reported earnings on Tuesday, it wasn't the first bank to make hay over the coming "investment-banking rebound." Top executives up and down across Wall Street have been talking for days about their predictions that Wall Street's bread-and-butter business of advising and financing deals could soon come roaring back. And the parade of optimism has only heated up this year as investment-banking revenues have started the slow climb from historical lows. AdvertisementIB revenues surgingLike many of the other Wall Street banks that reported earnings in recent days, Morgan Stanley saw investment-banking revenues soar in the second quarter. And as Pick said on Tuesday, Wall Street is getting excited about more than just traditional dealmaking, but also the financing and other hedging strategies that come with companies getting off the sidelines.

Senior housing stocks are set to take off as the American population ages, according to Bank of America. Ventas' portfolio includes senior housing communities, medical office buildings and other health-care facilities. Bank of America sees "significant" senior housing operating margins upside ahead, driven by cyclical and secular growth. However, a nonrenewal and a conversion of the properties to Ventas' senior housing operating portfolio would provide an additional 1.2% boost to net operating income, he said. That said, Ventas is not the only senior housing REIT that Bank of America likes.

Oil extends losses as dollar strengthens following Trump attack
  + stars: | 2024-07-15 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices fell for a second day on Monday as the dollar gained ground amid political uncertainty in the U.S. following an attack on U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump while investors eyed the progress of talks for a Gaza ceasefire. Brent crude futures fell 55 cents, or 0.7%, to $84.48 a barrel by 0109 GMT after settling down 37 cents on Friday. The dollar firmed on Monday while U.S. bond futures slipped as investors wagered the attack on Trump made his victory in the upcoming presidential election more likely. A stronger dollar tends to lower oil prices as buyers using other currencies have to pay more for their dollar-denominated crude. Still, oil markets are broadly underpinned by supply cuts from OPEC+ with Iraq's oil ministry saying it will compensate for any oil overproduction since the beginning of 2024.

The Macy's company logo is seen at the Macy's store on Herald Square on January 19, 2024 in New York City. Macy's department-store chain announced that they will be laying off roughly 2,350 employees which is about 3.5% of their workforce. Arkhouse and Brigade had for months been attempting to buy out the storied retailer. Arkhouse, after its initial efforts had been rebuffed, said earlier this year it intended to mount a proxy fight for control of Macy's. But the legacy department store operator's efforts to grow sales have been stymied by high inflation, as consumers become more selective about spending on discretionary items.

Betting against "antiskilled" finfluencers can yield a monthly 1.2% abnormal return. They added: "Furthermore, the social media sentiment by antiskilled finfluencers is highly persistent and induces long swings in the magnitude of their followers' belief bias." Given that antiskilled finfluencers tend to ride investing sentiment, their tone will follow the broader market attitude. That means that they'll tweet positively after a return, and negatively after a loss, while skilled accounts do the opposite.

CNN —Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has defended Joe Biden after being called “President Putin” by him, calling it “a mistake.”The US president accidentally referred to Zelensky as “President Putin” when introducing Zelensky at a NATO event on Thursday, before correcting the name moments later. While the US president – who faces mounting pressure over whether he is fit enough to serve another term in office – played down the gaffe at a high-stakes news conference later that day, the incident was scrutinized internationally. We can forget some mistakes, I think so,” he continued. The US is providing Ukraine with much-needed military support in its war against Russia. Weeks earlier, the United States and Ukraine signed a bilateral security pact, which commits the US for 10 years to continued training of Ukraine’s armed forces, as well as more weapons support and intelligence sharing.

Next week brings big earnings reports from heavyweight financials and a couple other Wall Street favorites, some of which have strong forward earnings momentum ripe for investment. For the quarterly period, the estimated year-over-year earnings growth rate for the broad market index is 8.8%, according to FactSet. Companies with strong earnings momentum often show revenue growth, improving margins or cost reductions, making the stocks look more attractive. Delta Air Lines on Thursday forecast record revenue for the third quarter thanks to booming summer travel demand, but its forecast fell short of analysts' estimates as carriers discounted fares after expanding flights. Adjusting for one-time items, Delta reported earnings of $1.53 billion, or $2.36 a share, in line with analysts' estimates. Delta said corporate travel continues to increase and that most customers expect to maintain or grow their corporate travel spending this quarter and after. Revenue from international travel has been strong since the pandemic waned, though airlines have expanded schedules, meaning more competition for customers. In the current quarter, Delta expects to break more revenue records.

To rate each state's infrastructure, we look at roads, bridges, ports and airports. New in 2024, we evaluate so-called site readiness programs set up in many states to link companies with shovel-ready sites. The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama offers one of the more robust site readiness programs in the nation. Roads, bridges, and broadband are also in excellent shape in Tennessee. A respectable 24% of the state's power comes from renewable energy, putting it in the top half of states.

Oil prices rebounded on Wednesday following three days of declines after an industry report showed U.S. crude and fuel stockpiles fell last week, indicating steady demand, and the outlook for interest rate cuts improved. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 26 cents to $81.67 a barrel, after falling 1.1% in the previous session. Following Powell's comments investors continued to put a nearly 70% probability on a Fed rate cut in September.
