Jeenah Moon | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThis week, the Department of Health and Human Services asked the Drug Enforcement Agency to consider easing restrictions on marijuana upon a review of its classification under the Controlled Substances Act. It could be a significant catalyst for an industry hemmed in by federal regulations even as legalization picks up on the state level. Marijuana is legal in 39 states medically and 23 states recreationally. If marijuana moves down to a Schedule III substance, this will effectively ease a number of restrictions holding the sector back. While many states have legal markets within their borders, transporting Schedule I substances across state lines in illegal, resulting in a glut of marijuana in some states.

Jack Daniel's maker Brown-Forman on Wednesday fell short of Wall Street expectations for its first quarter of fiscal 2024, plagued by lagging whiskey sales, supply challenges and a significant inventory rebuild. Net sales for whiskey products decreased by 1%, led by the brands Woodford Reserve and Gentleman Jack. Sales for Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey were flat, the company said, due to lower distributor inventories across the United States. Its New Mix RTD beverages delivered strong net sales growth of 52%, while its el Jimador tequila brand saw net sales grow by 27%. Reported advertising expense grew 19%, driven by the launch of its Jack Daniel's & Coca-Cola RTD item, increased investment in Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, and acquisitions.

Beneath the trimmed flower is a tray collecting shake, cannabis flower that has naturally broken down through handling. Marijuana is currently a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it's deemed to have no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. The news sent shares of several cannabis companies, including Canopy Growth , Tilray Brands and Cronos Group , jumping Wednesday. "Certainly, moving cannabis off of Schedule 1 is the right decision and long overdue," Rea said in a statement. "Though a full descheduling would be preferred and likely most appropriate for cannabis, we welcome smart decisions and progress towards full legalization and regulation in the legal cannabis industry."

Rapper Eminem has demanded Vivek Ramaswamy stop using his music on the campaign trail — and the Republican presidential candidate looks ready to let the issue go. In a cease-and-desist order sent to Ramaswamy's lawyer on Aug. 23, music publisher BMI said Eminem took issue with the use of his music during Ramaswamy's campaign events. In response, the Ramaswamy campaign signaled the GOP hopeful will not perform the song again. To the American people's chagrin, we will have to leave the rapping to the real slim shady," a spokesperson for the Ramaswamy campaign told NBC News. Many politicians have been sent similar cease-and-desist orders in past election cycles over their campaign song choices.

Credit Suisse has already flagged that it expects to post a hefty loss for 2023. Rich clients often kept accounts at both UBS and Credit Suisse, so as not to place all their eggs in one basket. In previous quarters, UBS had reported significant inflows, as it benefited from Credit Suisse clients looking for safer alternatives. SWISS BANK'S FUTUREMany bank watchers are waiting to see what UBS does with Credit Suisse's "crown jewel" - its Swiss arm. The huge figure largely reflects a one-off boost to the bottom line from UBS buying Credit Suisse for a fraction of its value.

Here are four trends that are shaping the gun industry today:Market normalizationSeveral companies in the gun market are slowing down production and slashing prices as they combat material cost increases and waning demand for their weapons. Gun sales typically see a spike during presidential elections, Dionisio added. Investors in Biofire include venture capitalist Ron Conway and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund Biofire's smart gun comes as gun manufacturers increasingly look for different materials and technologies to make their products more appealing to consumers. "Smart guns can ensure that guns are accessible by their owners and no one else," said Nick Suplina, senior vice president for law and policy at Everytown, who has tested Biofire's smart gun. First-time gun purchasers during the pandemic, according to the study, were younger than previous, pre-pandemic U.S. gun owners.

Even as the import ban kicked in, tables were filled at Japanese restaurant Fumi in Hong Kong on August 24, 2023. Kathleen Magramo/CNNHours before China’s announcement, the Asian financial center of Hong Kong – a semi-autonomous Chinese city – imposed its own ban on aquatic product imports from 10 Japanese regions including Tokyo and Fukushima. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has reportedly “strongly” requested via diplomatic channels that China “immediately overturn” the ban. Still, Fei too thought that the bans from China and Hong Kong would have limited impact on Japanese trade. Consequently, even considering the reputational damage for Japanese seafood products, Japan’s overall exports will not be materially undermined,” Fei said.

London CNN —It’s been nearly two decades since Germany shrugged off its “sick man of Europe” label with a series of labor market reforms that ushered in years of economic outperformance. Sticky inflation and three straight quarters of falling or stagnating output have put Europe’s biggest economy in the doldrums. “Sticky” inflation is eroding Germans’ purchasing power, fueling “pessimism among households,” according to Thomas Obst, senior economist at the Cologne Institute for Economic Research. “[German] industrial order books have emptied over the last 12 months,” Carsten Brzeski, global head of macroeconomic research at ING, told CNN. “Germany is in a very singular position.”Bright spotsHolger Schmieding, the economist who first called Germany the “sick man of Europe” in 1998, thinks the “current wave of pessimism” over its economy is overdone.

Germany was first described with that moniker in 1998 as the country navigated the costly challenges of a post-reunification economy. "It is a different sickness [compared to] 20 years ago," Brzeski told CNBC. As a workplace psychology researcher, I've spent more than 30 years helping companies navigate overly selfish employees, particularly the ones whose behavior can be harmful to their teammates. Here are five toxic phrases highly selfish and entitled individuals always use — and how to deal with them:1. No matter how mediocre they actually are, selfish people tend to assume that they always bring exceptional value to others. They disregard the truth that most of our ideas, opinions and suggestions carry flaws, regardless of the effort we invest in them. A highly selfish person tends to be less successful than someone who channels their self-centered tendencies into helping others.

Altria has called for a ban on the importation and sale of these Juul products. Altria bought full global ownership of NJOY's e-vapor product portfolio in June for approximately $2.75 billion. The deal included the product NJOY ACE, the only pod-based vape with market authorizations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In addition to the lawsuit filed with the ITC, Altria filed a similar suit against Juul in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

A leading exchange-traded fund in the cannabis space will close up shop as investor interest in the legally restricted industry wanes. AdvisorShares, the largest cannabis fund manager, said its Poseidon Dynamic Cannabis ETF will see its final day of trading Aug. 25. The closure comes as investors lose interest in the quasi-legal cannabis industry that has struggled to scale. Meanwhile, Pure US Cannabis ETF , another fund in the industry by AdvisorShares, plummeted about 60% during the same period. Mastercard, in a move that further alienates the cannabis industry from big banking, announced last month it will stop allowing cannabis transactions on its debit cards to be in compliance with federal law.

By contrast, one brand of vegan schnitzel only rose 5%, suggesting some vegan products have minimal long-term environmental and health costs. Despite Germany's recent drop in inflation, food prices still remain 11% higher this month compared to 12 months ago. The company temporarily hiked some prices to comment on how food prices are not fully indicative of broader long-term environmental and health costs. Aug 8 (Reuters) - Switzerland successfully defended their team time trial mixed relay crown at the world championships on Tuesday despite a crash for Marlen Reusser. Stefan Bissegger, Stefan Kung and Mauro Schmid had a good start before they handed it over to the women's team consisting of Reusser, Elise Chabbey and Nicole Koller, when Reusser lost valuable time after a crash. Reusser is one of the favourites for the individual time trial but she did manage to quickly get back on her bike to continue. The crash did little to hurt their chances as Switzerland eventually finished with a time of 54 minutes and 16.20 seconds, a full seven seconds ahead of France while Germany were third. Britain were fourth, more than a minute behind, while Italy were fifth after Silvia Persico lost time due to a mechanical.

Ukrainian snipers rarely use ghillie suits, camouflage preferred by Western snipers, several marksmen told the Kyiv Post. For the US military, ghillie suit preparation is a key part of sniper training. A ghillie suit is not always necessary to achieve that though. But while they aren't fans of the ghillie suit, there's a few Western weapons they're fond of. The weapons that were tossed aside when these Western weapons showed up were the Soviet/Russian-made SVD "Dragunov " sniper rifles.

German agriculture was responsible for 55.5 million metric tonnes of greenhouse emissions last year, roughly 7.4% of the country's emissions. During the "true cost" campaign, which runs until Saturday, customers at Penny's 2,150 branches, will be charged a price for nine products, from yoghurt to sausages and vegan schnitzel, that includes climate, health, soil and water costs. According to figures provided by Penny, organic products had environmental costs of an average of 1.15 euros, while non-organic products that relied on chemicals had an average environmental cost of 1.57 euros. It is unclear, however, whether consumers are prepared to pay more to reduce their environmental impact.
