The battle to win the Republican Iowa caucus is the most expensive on record, with over $120 million spent on ads by the campaigns and their affiliated political action committees in the Hawkeye State, according to data provided to CNBC by AdImpact. Around $84 million of the $120 million total ad buys came from campaigns and allies of the top three candidates, Trump, Haley and Florida. DeSantis' campaign and two outside allies have spent a combined $30 million on TV, digital, and radio ads in Iowa. One of the two DeSantis super PACs, Never Back Down, has knocked on over 915,000 doors in the Iowa, according to the organization. As for Trump's super PAC, MAGA Inc. would not provide data on what efforts they've made outside of their ad spending in support of the former president.

Launched in 2018, AP VoteCast is a comprehensive survey of both voters and nonvoters that aims to tell the story behind the election results. For example, in the 2020 presidential election, AP VoteCast results showed that white men favored Donald Trump, while women with college degrees favored Joe Biden. Prior to the launch of AP VoteCast in 2018, the AP worked with other major news organizations to conduct Election Day exit polls. AP VoteCast results from the Iowa GOP caucuses will be available Monday night on the AP's caucus results homepage. A detailed description of the methodology used in AP VoteCast is also available.

The long road to the Republican presidential nomination begins tonight in Iowa, where voters will gather at their neighborhood precinct caucuses to cast the first votes of the 2024 election campaign. Iowa may not have many voters or delegates, but the first-in-the-nation caucuses always attract a media frenzy. But tonight, Iowa voters seem likely to choose Donald J. Trump — someone they didn’t pick eight years ago, but who now appears poised for the largest victory in a contested Iowa Republican caucus. In 2016, Iowa voters rejected Mr. Trump in favor of Ted Cruz. And unlike most of the country, the Republican establishment in Iowa has not gone along with Mr. Trump.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—Nikki Haley has been waxing sentimental in recent days on the campaign trail about the fun she has had and the people she has met in the past year in this state that hosts the first 2024 Republican presidential caucuses Monday. Left unsaid is how eager she must be to get out of the state and pivot to New Hampshire, where the nation’s first primary, on Jan. 23, offers her the best prospect of throwing a roadblock in front of former President Donald Trump.

For Davis, who will also serve as a Trump caucus captain on the night of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, the connection is deeply personal. Ron DeSantis, Trump’s campaign is hoping for the kind of blowout that will blunt his rivals' momentum as he tries to lock up the nomination and pivot to the general election. To attract new participants, the Trump campaign produced an animated “Schoolhouse Rock!”-style video and sent mailers that tell voters their caucus sites. Trump’s campaign cites other advantages. It's a difference that matters, said Dan Heffernen, 64, a Trump caucus captain who owns a small construction business in Altoona.

No surprise then, that Haley's presidential campaign website features a "Record of Results" tab with more than a dozen subtopics. The competitionTypically, a presidential campaign makes it as easy as possible for the public to learn what the candidate would do if elected. But a curious voter who visited Haley's campaign website would need to navigate through press clips and TV appearances to find one. CNBC reached out to Haley's campaign to ask why they do not have a comprehensive policy agenda on the campaign site. The link revealed something unexpected: The document did not appear under any of the sections into which Haley's campaign site was divided, like "News," or "About Nikki" or "Action Center."

“Our grassroots supporters have put us in position to win, and now we have to show up to Caucus for President Trump on Monday and get the job done,” Trump said in a statement late Saturday, after the poll’s release. The DeSantis campaign seized on that uncertainty in a late Saturday night message to supporters who might have felt stung by the latest horse-race numbers. Like everyone else, Trump was thinking about the weather – and what it could mean for the caucuses – upon setting foot in Des Moines. Nearly 90% of Trump-backing likely caucus-goers say in the poll that they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting for him. Larry Hogan on Sunday endorsed Nikki Haley for the GOP nomination, saying he feels she “is the strongest chance” for Republicans to win in November. Hogan, one of his party’s fiercest Trump critics, had fueled speculation that he was preparing for his own third-party bid when he stepped down from the leadership of No Labels. Hogan told AP he had no interest in a “kamikaze mission.”In the past two presidential elections, Hogan said he did not vote for Trump, the party nominee. But on the eve of the caucuses, DeSantis is on the brink in a state where he’s banked his entire campaign. Big donors soon discovered that the Florida governor could be a flat and uninspiring candidate. It was a cringeworthy moment that could become a pitiful emblem of busted hopes if the Florida governor doesn’t mount a comeback on Monday. “If the number that we have is anywhere close to reality, he’s going to have a very, very good night,” Vander Plaats said. GARNER, Iowa—Republican voters in Hancock County largely rejected Donald Trump eight years ago, giving him less than a fifth of the vote in the GOP caucuses. As recently as a year ago, some party faithful here and elsewhere in Iowa seemed eager to move on, saying they were tired of the former president’s chaos and liabilities. Now Trump appears poised to win this county Monday and claim victory in Iowa’s caucuses, powered largely by his overwhelming support among rural voters who see him as the best candidate to advance a populist conservative agenda. That pattern has played out in similar places across the country, helping explain why Trump has a hold over the Republican Party and is the nomination front-runner.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—Political operatives have long said having a robust organizational effort that can turn out supporters on a cold winter night is critical for success in Iowa’s presidential caucuses. That could put a dent in turnout, especially among older voters, for the first 2024 Republican nomination balloting.
