ATLANTA (AP) — A federal judge who rejected efforts by former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to move his charges in the Georgia election subversion case to federal court is set to hear arguments Monday from former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark on the same issue. Clark is one of five defendants seeking to move his case to federal court. While the ruling could signal an uphill battle for Clark and the others, Jones made clear he would assess each case individually. The practical effects of moving to federal court would be a jury pool that includes a broader area than just overwhelmingly Democratic Fulton County and a trial that would not be photographed or televised, as cameras are not allowed inside federal courtrooms. The law allowing federal officers to move a case to federal court “is designed to protect legitimate federal authority from state and local interference, not to afford a federal forum to individuals who blatantly sought to misuse the weight of federal authority to interfere with matters of state control,” prosecutors wrote.

CNN —If Week 1 is the week of overreaction, Week 2 is when we begin to see patterns emerging. With Melvin watching from the first base dugout in Oakland for the first time since May 2009, the Padres (78-70) delivered an 8-3 win in the opener of the three-game series on Friday. Melvin was back at the site of six A's trips to the postseason in his 11 seasons. "I loved it," said Melvin, who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area town of Atherton and attended the University of California. Padres starter Matt Waldron (0-3, 5.55 ERA) hopes to get the type of support on Saturday that Seth Lugo received in the Friday opener. Crude oil storage tanks are seen in an aerial photograph at the Cushing oil hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, U.S. April 21, 2020. Cushing crude stocks have depleted by 18 million barrels (-42%) since the end of June compared with just 14 million barrels (-3%) elsewhere. In consequence, the net position in WTI climbed to 225 million barrels (42nd percentile for all weeks since 2013) up from a record low of just 46 million barrels. It is possible Cushing inventories are being liquidated to make up for reduced flows from Saudi Arabia and other Middle East exporters. Insider Today: Big banks are screwed
  + stars: | 2023-09-14 | by ( Dan Defrancesco | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +8 min
It's the latest example of the pressure big banks are under to keep their place atop Wall Street. Before the announcement, the bank's share price was down almost 9% this year, trailing all of its fellow big bank peers in the US except Bank of America. Citi's overhaul represents how big banks are scrambling to stay on top of a financial world passing them by. CEO Jamie Dimon recently quipped he "wouldn't be a big buyer of a bank" in reference to proposed regulations requiring big banks to keep more money on the sidelines. Whether it's fintechs or so-called shadow banks, there's no shortage of players looking to offer services previously dominated by big banks.

REUTERS/Fabrizio Bensch/ Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Global distillate fuel oil inventories remain much lower than normal for the time of year which is putting strong upward pressure on fuel prices. Initially, the upward pressure on distillate refining margins was masked by downward pressure on the underlying prices for crude oil. Since July, however, both crude prices and distillate refining margins have been rising, causing the total price of fuel to surge. Germany, Italy and the Netherlands all reported sharp reductions in gas consumption in June and July compared with the pre-invasion average. Most energy-intensive industrial users require uninterrupted supplies, buy gas on contracts linked to longer-term averages, and hedge their costs forward to lock in profit margins. Prices for gas to be delivered throughout 2024 are still double the inflation-adjusted average for the five years between 2017 and 2021. But the region has paid a high price in terms of reduced manufacturing activity, which could lead to permanent deindustrialisation unless gas prices are reduced significantly within the next couple of years. Graham, who appeared before the special grand jury last year after a court battle over his testimony, spoke with Georgia election officials after the 2020 election. CNN —The Fulton County special purpose grand jury investigating former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia recommended charges against 39 people, the unredacted grand jury report made public Friday shows. The lengthy list of recommended charges underscores how widespread the special grand jury’s investigation was into efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The indictment also included 30 unindicted co-conspirators alleged to have taken part in the conspiracy, including some people the special grand jury recommended charges against. The special grand jury report was only a recommendation, and the district attorney decided which charges to bring to a grand jury last month before the indictment was returned. Chartbook: U.S. manufacturing and energy useIndustrial electricity use and distillate fuel oil consumption are both correlated with the manufacturing and freight cycle and therefore with the purchasing managers index. Distillate fuel oil consumption fell by 1.0% in the three months from April through June compared with the same period a year earlier. The strength of domestic distillate consumption helps explain why fuel oil inventories have remained well below the prior ten-year seasonal average. Resilient electricity and diesel consumption, and the correspondingly low levels of spare generating capacity and distillate inventories, imply the energy system is operating close to its maximum capacity. Based on the historical record, after prices peak it takes on average 5 months for drilling to turn down and 12 months for production to decline. Following the drilling peak, Lower 48 output is likely to peak in the third quarter of 2023, as exploration and production firms work their way through the inventory of drilled but uncompleted oil wells. Georgia is, of course, also the place where Donald Trump called and asked a Republican to “find” votes. And Georgia is the place where the Fulton County district attorney, Fani Willis, filed criminal charges that led to the indictment of Mr. Trump and 18 others for a conspiracy to subvert the 2020 election. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of Mr. Trump’s most enduring defenders representing one of the country’s more conservative districts, posted an image of an American flag upside down, signaling distress. And in one second-floor wing of Georgia’s State Capitol, a pair of Republican executives most likely shed few tears. “The 2020 election in Georgia was not stolen,” Mr. Kemp said last month on social media in response to Mr. Trump’s claims that he would unveil a report demonstrating the state’s election was fraudulent.

Hyundai, LG to spend $2 billion more on Georgia battery plant

Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution will boost their joint investment in a Georgia battery manufacturing plant by $2 billion and add 400 additional jobs, the companies and the state said Thursday. The auto manufacturing plant is scheduled to begin producing vehicles in January 2025 and will build 300,000 vehicles annually. Auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis will assemble battery packs using cells from the plant, then supply them to Hyundai Motor manufacturing facilities in the United States for production of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis electric vehicles. Last year, Hyundai global chief operating officer Jose Munoz said the Georgia plant could eventually produce 500,000 vehicles annually, if demand warrants. Hyundai Motor in April said it had finalized a separate $5 billion electric vehicle battery joint venture in the US with partner SK On, a battery unit of SK Innovation Co.

But a strong El Niño tends to produce a significant and observable impact on weather patterns, lowering gas consumption and prices. On four of those six occasions, strong El Niño conditions prevailed the following winter (1957/58, 1987/88, 1997/98 and 2015/16). But a strong El Niño would make warmer-than-average temperatures more likely depressing energy consumption and prices. The rapid development of a strong El Niño helps explain why U.S. gas prices remain low in real terms despite the recent depletion of working gas inventories. Traders have started to anticipate a strong El Niño will reduce gas consumption for heating and power generation this winter.

LONDON, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Crude oil prices have stalled as the wave of hedge fund buying that helped lift them throughout July and the first part of August has been replaced by gentle selling. Hedge funds and other money managers sold the equivalent of 30 million barrels in the six most important petroleum futures and options contracts over the seven days ending on Aug. 22. Nearly all the sales were in crude (-29 million barrels) with sales of NYMEX and ICE WTI (-16 million barrels) and Brent (-13 million barrels), according to position records filed with regulators and exchanges. There was a mix of profit-taking after the previous rally by liquidating existing bullish long positions (-18 million barrels) and speculative short sales (+11 million barrels) in anticipation of future price falls. There are also increasing indications the United States is relaxing sanctions on crude exports from Iran and Venezuela in exchange for diplomatic objectives and to keep a lid on oil prices.
