" The firm kept its buy rating on shares but lowered its price target to $122 from $135. Shares of Disney have shed about 35% year to date. Until the division reaches profitability, there could be more pain for investors up to the turning point for the company. Nov 8 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) said on Tuesday its marquee streaming service, Disney+, gained more subscribers than Wall Street had expected, but investment costs dragged quarterly earnings below analysts' targets. Disney is spending billions to build its streaming options and compete with Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) and others. Disney+ reported 164.2 million subscribers in the fiscal fourth quarter, surpassing Factset estimates of 161 million. Disney has amassed 235 million subscriptions across Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ streaming services, a gain of 14.6 million from the previous quarter. For the fiscal year, Disney reported per-share earnings of $3.53, excluding certain items, on revenues of $82.7 billion.
Disney’s theme parks division has raised prices but also introduced new technology to reduce crowd sizes and coax guests to return. When Walt Disney Co. reports its fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday afternoon, investors will be looking to see if the streaming business is making progress toward profitability and how well the entertainment giant’s theme parks did this summer. Disney beat expectations when it announced third-quarter results in August, reporting a 26% surge in revenue. That quarter included record results from the theme parks division, which has raised prices but also introduced new technology to reduce crowd sizes and coax guests to return following the worst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Disney’s theme parks division has raised prices but also introduced new technology to reduce crowd sizes and coax guests to return. Walt Disney Co. reported weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday as losses continued to widen in the streaming business, offsetting the strong performance of the company’s theme parks. In the three months ended Oct. 1, the company’s flagship streaming service Disney+ added 12.1 million net new accounts, bringing its global total to 164.2 million subscribers. Analysts were expecting 8.86 million additions, according to FactSet.
The law came with a list of locations where possession of a firearm is a felony regardless of permit status, including New York City’s Times Square. A federal judge issued a second ruling against New York’s new gun-control law and blocked its prohibitions on carrying concealed firearms in parks, bars and houses of worship. U.S. District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby in Syracuse said in a 184-page ruling that many aspects of New York’s law placed an unconstitutional burden on gun rights protected by the Second Amendment. He issued a preliminary injunction that barred the state from enforcing an array of restrictions and rules, including ones that required gun-permit applicants to demonstrate good moral character and provide information about their family members and social-media accounts.

NEW YORK, Nov 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Walt Disney (DIS.N) boss Bob Chapek is knee-deep in the video-streaming money pit. New subscribers keep signing up, too: Disney+ counts 164 million, a 39% jump from 12 months earlier. With investors now prioritizing costs over growth, however, Disney shares fell 10% in after-hours trading. Netflix generated $5 billion of operating profit over the first nine months of 2022. If the Netflix enterprise commands 18 times expected EBITDA, per Refinitiv data, Disney will find enough fairy dust to warrant a multiple higher than 12 times.

All eyes will be on Disney 's streaming numbers when the company reports its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings after the bell Tuesday. While Netflix expects subscriber growth to rebound, uncertainty has left analysts and investors wondering what the future holds for the broader industry. Analysts are anticipating Disney+ subscriber adds of roughly 8 million for the period between July and September, bringing the total number of users to more than 160 million, according to StreetAccount estimates. There's also concern that a looming recession could impact Disney's other business ventures like its parks and studio businesses.

Operating income fell 91% to $83 million mostly due to higher than expected losses from the Direct-to-Consumer business. In better news, Disney ended Q4 with 164.2 million Disney+ subscribers, up 12.1 million from the prior quarter and well above estimates of about 160.45 million. Bundling has a negative effect on ARPUs, and Disney said Tuesday evening that bundled and multiproduct offerings now make up over 40% of domestic Disney+ subscribers. In terms of subscribers, Disney sees core Disney+ subscribers slightly increasing in its first quarter, though Disney+ Hotstar is expected to lose subs due to the absence of the Indian Premier League Cricket rights. After checking consensus estimates, this is a terrible miss compared to expectations of sales growing by 11% and operating income increasing by 17%.
High inflation and interest rates are here to stay in 2023, said PwC's Byron Carlock. To the dismay of real estate investors everywhere, Byron Carlock says that higher interest rates are here to stay for 2023. And while housing input prices and the costs of raw materials have begun to moderate, he doesn't believe that these can completely offset the ongoing increase in interest rates. But there's also a few obstacles in the way of reimagining entire cities, Carlock. "Cities are going to have to step up their game with respect to zoning and entitlement processes," he added.
The National Park Service told visitors not to lick toads or anything else they find in the parks. The Sonoran Desert toad, also known as the Colorado River toad, can grow to nearly 7 inches and is one of the largest toads in North America. The practice is dangerous and can make humans and animals sick, as the Sonoran Desert toads release toxins through glands in their skin as a powerful defense mechanism. The relevant psychoactive substance, 5-MeO-DMT, is illegal in the US and designated a Schedule 1 substance, but that hasn't stopped it from accruing fans. Some are concerned that the growing embrace of psychedelics and 5-MeO-DMT could threaten the existence of the Sonoran Desert toad due to illegal poaching and overharvesting, the Times reported.
NEW YORK, Nov 7 (Reuters) - A federal judge in New York temporarily suspended many parts of the state's new gun restrictions on Monday to allow members of a gun-owners' rights group to continue their lawsuit challenging the new law as unconstitutional. Judge Glenn Suddaby of the U.S. District Court in Syracuse agreed to issue the order at the request of six New York residents who are members of Gun Owners of America, which competes with the National Rifle Association in political influence. In his order, he said New York officials could not compel people applying for a gun license to disclose a list of everyone they live with or the handles of their social media accounts, major provisions of the Concealed Carry Improvement Act which took effect on Sept. 1. He also sharply pared back New York's new list of "sensitive places" where it is a new felony crime to possess a gun even with a license, writing that the state could not ban guns in theaters, bars, parks, airports and other public places. Investors are more than happy when politicians bicker but don’t actually enact any new laws that may hurt corporate profits. If Republicans get the House, tax hikes are dead in the water,” said David Wagner, a portfolio manager with Aptus Capital Advisors. That’s because there are some areas of consensus for the White House and Republican lawmakers. Congress and the White House may spend more time bickering than trying to pass legislation. Ameriprise chief market strategist Anthony Saglimbene said on a conference call last week about the midterms that stocks have historically gone up after elections, no matter which party controls the White House and Congress.
[1/5] Recent North Korean missile tests are pictured in this undated combination photo taken at undisclosed locations and released on November 7, 2022 by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Last week, North Korea test-fired multiple missiles including a possible failed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and hundreds of artillery shells into the sea, as South Korea and the United States carried out six-day air drills until Saturday. The North's military said the "Vigilant Storm" exercises were an "open provocation aimed at intentionally escalating the tension" and "a dangerous war drill of very high aggressive nature." The General Staff of the North's Korean People's Army (KPA) accused Seoul and Washington of eliciting a "more unstable confrontation," and vowed to counter their drills with "sustained, resolute and overwhelming practical military measures." HONG KONG — After mass unrest in 2019, a pandemic that left it isolated from the world and the imposition of a national security law that has crushed dissent, Hong Kong is ready to turn the page. According to government statistics, about 319,000 people arrived in Hong Kong last month, down 97% from 10.8 million in October 2019. According to one report last month, Hong Kong has lost its status as Asia’s top financial center to Singapore. While it may not be realistic to expect businesses to turn away from China’s huge market, global business leaders “need to recognize that there’s a new situation in Hong Kong, there’s a new reality,” said Brian Kern, the lead researcher for a report on doing business in Hong Kong that was published last month by the Hong Kong Democracy Council, a nonprofit group based in Washington. Lee also pointed to a report in September in which Hong Kong topped Singapore as the world’s freest economy.

“I have more steak knives in my back from Republicans that have turned on us and stepped on us for their own benefit,” Nevada GOP Party Chair Michael McDonald said at a recent event in Reno. In 2020, Biden carried Nevada by just more than 33,000 votes via a similar path of winning Clark and Washoe counties. "The Republican Party has lost its mind," Cashell said. “Here in Washoe County, we have made it abundantly clear that if you as a Republican damage the Republican brand, there are consequences,” Washoe County GOP Chair Bruce Parks said in an interview. The county, as well as other Republican county organizations in Nevada have formally censured Republicans, like former GOP party chair Amy Tarkanian, after she endorsed two Democrats in Tuesday’s election.
There are two big hurdles for markets in the week ahead - another potentially hot consumer inflation report and the Congressional midterm elections. "100% of the time, the S & P 500 has been up 12 months after the midterm election." Midterm rallies Stocks tend to gain in the final months of midterm election years, and strategists have been expecting the market to move higher. CFRA Chief Market Strategist Sam Stovall said even when interest rates are climbing, the midterm election has been a catalyst for stocks. NAIROBI, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Drought in Kenya killed 205 elephants and scores of other wildlife between February and October as much of East Africa endures its worst drought in 40 years, tourism minister Peninah Malonza said on Friday. Although sporadic rainfall has finally started in the region, Kenya's Meteorological Department is forecasting below-average rainfall for much of the country for the coming months, raising fears that the threat to Kenya's wildlife is not over. There have also been 49 deaths of the rare and endangered Grevy's zebra. In September, conservation group Grevy's Zebra Trust said that 40 Grevy's had died in just a three-month period because of the drought, representing nearly 2% of the species population. Last month, charity Save the Elephants said that one famed calf, well-known for being a twin, a rarity for elephants, died during the drought.
The lawsuit filed on Thursday is the latest development in the high-profile case around Gabby Petito’s death. In doing so, the lawsuit alleges officers disregarded signs of violence they should have been trained to notice. The suit also alleges police officers “coached Gabby to provide answers that the officers used to justify their decision not to enforce Utah law,” which requires action be taken in response to domestic violence incidents. “Our officers acted with kindness, respect, and empathy toward Ms. Petito,” city spokesperson Lisa Adams said in a statement. An independent investigation in January faulted police for making “several unintentional mistakes” including not issuing a domestic violence citation after Petito told police she had hit her fiancé.

Major glaciers across the world, including those in the Dolomites in Italy, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Yosemite and Yellowstone parks in the U.S., will be gone by 2050 even if global greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said in a report on Thursday. Even if global temperature rise is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), an increasingly unlikely scenario, at least one-third of the roughly 18,000 glaciers across the 50 World Heritage sites will disappear by mid-century. Only a rapid reduction in our CO2 emissions levels can save glaciers and the exceptional biodiversity that depends on them," UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said in a statement. The other glaciers can be saved only if emissions are reduced dramatically and global temperatures do not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming, UNESCO warned in its report. Half of humanity depends directly or indirectly on glaciers as a water source for domestic use, agriculture and power, according to the report.
