KAMPALA, Aug 28 (Reuters) - A 20-year-old man has become the first Ugandan to be charged with "aggravated homosexuality", an offence punishable by death under the country's recently enacted anti-gay law, prosecutors and his lawyer said. It prescribes life in prison for same-sex intercourse. According to a charge sheet seen by Reuters, the defendant was charged on Aug. 18 with aggravated homosexuality after he "performed unlawful sexual intercourse" with a 41-year-old man. She said she was not aware of anyone else having been previously charged with aggravated homosexuality. Balya said four other people have been charged under the law since its enactment and that her client was the first to be prosecuted for aggravated homosexuality.

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The indictment of Former President Donald Trump for interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia will be the biggest case of prosecutor Fani Willis' career, but it will not be her first contentious prosecution. “She’s not afraid of big cases,” said Gerald Griggs, a criminal defense attorney and president of the Georgia state conference of the NAACP. Willis worked from 2001 to 2018 in the Fulton County prosecutor's office, then won election as county prosecutor in 2020, defeating her former boss, Paul Howard. The main requirements under the federal RICO law are at least two underlying crimes and participation in a criminal enterprise over a long period of time. WHY ARE PROSECUTORS USING RICO? That means prosecutors would not necessarily have to prove Trump personally broke the law but knowingly coordinated with others who did. RICO cases are inherently more complex because prosecutors must first prove the existence of a criminal enterprise. Prosecutors will need to prove that Trump and his co-defendants worked together towards a common criminal purpose, which is not always as straightforward as proving an underlying RICO crime.

The destruction from the landslides was severe in India's Himachal Pradesh, where structures were swept away under rocks and falling trees, roads had caved in, and power and the railway network disrupted. Two people also died in neighbouring Uttarakhand state in rain-related incidents. Heavy rain is forecast to continue until Wednesday in parts of Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring Uttarakhand.
