SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Ohio town at the center of a culture war over debunked claims about Haitian migrants was forced to close its City Hall on Thursday after receiving a bomb threat, the city announced on its website and social media channels. The bomb threat "was issued to multiple facilities throughout Springfield,” the city said. The city’s mayor, Rob Rue, indicated Thursday that the threat included complaints about Haitian migrants in the city, according to the Springfield News-Sun. Springfield has recently been thrust into the national political culture war as conservative influencers and Republican politicians have repeated a debunked claim that immigrants from Haiti have been stealing and eating pets. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats," he said.

A grueling manhunt for the suspect wanted in a highway shooting spree stretched into its fifth day as authorities said they believe he retreated deep into a forested swath of southeastern Kentucky with no indication he has fled elsewhere. “There’s so many people that have eyes on this investigation around the world that now we should have gotten a pretty good tip that he exited the woods,” Pennington told reporters 72 hours into the operation. Amid the search, authorities went to his home in Woodbine, about 23 miles from the shooting site, to collect evidence. The search by foot remains daunting, Pennington said, as temperatures have stayed above 80 degrees during the day. “I hope he doesn’t have water, and I hope he doesn’t have food," Pennington said at a news conference Tuesday.

She has pushed conspiracy theories about undocumented immigrants registering to vote in November, and she touted the baseless story about Haitian immigrants eating cats. On Wednesday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., called for Loomer to delete an “extremely racist” post targeting Vice President Kamala Harris. “This does not represent President Trump. Greene has promoted antisemitic conspiracy theories and made controversial remarks about the Holocaust, comparing mask mandates to the Holocaust before later apologizing. The counting and certification of electoral votes at the Capitol in January — the first since the Jan. 6 riot in 2021 — will come with significantly increased security, the Secret Service said Wednesday. The Department of Homeland Security has designated the Jan. 6 count as a national special security event, affording it a level of security similar to events like the State of the Union address and the Super Bowl. “National Special Security Events are events of the highest national significance,” Eric Ranaghan, the special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Dignitary Protective Division, said in a statement Wednesday. The Secret Service, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, also cited reports from the former House Jan. 6 committee and the Government Accountability Office, which had asked Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to consider the enhanced security measures. The designation will unlock federal, state and local resources to be used in its security plan, the Secret Service said.

His daughter said in July that he was planning to run for Peru’s presidency for the fourth time in 2026. The former university president and mathematics professor was the consummate political outsider when he emerged from obscurity to win Peru’s 1990 election over writer Mario Vargas Llosa. He had hoped to run for Peru’s presidency in 2006, but instead wound up in court facing charges of abuse of power. He became the first former president in the world to be tried and convicted in his own country for human rights violations. “After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just departed to meet the Lord,” she said on X Wednesday.

Rare bipartisan momentum is growing in the House of Representatives to force a vote on a bill that would address a topic Congress typically avoids — Social Security. The bill — the Social Security Fairness Act — would repeal two rules that reduce Social Security benefits for workers and spouses, widows and widowers who also receive pension income. The petition currently has 172 signatures out of the 218 signatures required for a vote, including 25 Republicans, according to Spanberger's office. If brought to the House floor, the Social Security Fairness Act may pass, based on the 327 co-sponsors who are currently behind the proposal. The WEP, in particular, is "deeply, incredibly misunderstood," which contributes to calls to simply get rid of the rule, Sprick said.

CNN —Pete Buttigieg on Thursday slammed former President Donald Trump’s recent false claims that migrants are eating pets, saying it’s a strategy to distract from the Republican presidential nominee’s record. “There’s even more to it than demonizing immigrants – although that’s obviously part of what he’s doing,” said Buttigieg, appearing on CNN’s “The Source” with Kaitlan Collins. Buttigieg praised Vice President Kamala Harris’ debate performance but stressed that groundwork and organizing is more important to win the race. “No one night, no one event, no one appearance, no one debate is going to decide this,” Buttigieg told Collins. So that’s going to continue and I think that’s how she’s going to win.”

CNN —A nearly four-year-old legal effort by Black voters to convince a court to prevent former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party from potentially intimidating voters and poll workers is quietly coming back to life as the 2024 election approaches. First brought in the days following the 2020 election, the lawsuit has moved slowly through the federal courts in Washington, DC, as Trump’s claims of presidential immunity from civil lawsuits were being litigated. It coincidently has landed before US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, the judge handling the federal election subversion charges against Trump. Attorneys for Trump and the RNC have asked to dismiss the case, saying any conduct at issue constitutes protected political speech. A federal judge found the two men liable for targeting Black voters in 2023, saying that their actions ran afoul of the KKK Act, the VRA and other laws.

And when Trump scolded Harris’ attempt to interrupt him, some allies lamented that he lost control at a key moment.
