Dartmouth College, and Rice, Vanderbilt and Northwestern universities agreed to pay a total of $166 million to settle claims filed in a 2022 class action lawsuit alleging the schools colluded on the amount of financial aid awarded to students, while favoring applicants from wealthier families. The report pointed to a faulty software algorithm used by the agency that selects who gets audited and noted the earned income tax credit contributed to this disparity. The credit has a high 'improper payments rate'In 2022, about 23 million filers received $57 billion from the earned income tax credit, and the tax break averaged $2,541. For tax year 2023, the credit is worth up to $7,430 for a household with three or more children, according to the IRS.

The study found that nearly 90% of food delivery trips get a customer tip, compared to 75% of grocery delivery trips and 28% of Uber and Lyft ride-hailing trips. Hospitals in recent years have shifted their use of online technology to support everything from telehealth to medical devices to patient records. Brett Callow, an analyst for the cybersecurity firm Emsisoft, counted 46 cyberattacks on hospitals last year, compared with 25 in 2022. The dramatic increase in these online raids has prompted the nation’s top health agency to develop new rules for hospitals to protect themselves from cyber threats. Linda Hennis was checking her Medicare statement in January when she noticed something strange: It said a company she had never heard of had been paid about $12,000 for sending her 2,000 urinary catheters. But she had never needed, or received, any catheters. The report used a federal database of Medicare claims that is available to researchers. Doctors, state insurance departments and health care groups around the country said the spike in claims for catheters that were never delivered suggested a far-reaching Medicare scam. “We think it’s outrageous,” said Clif Gaus, executive director of the group that conducted the analysis.
