North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accompanied by government officials, departs Pyongyang, North Korea, to visit Russia, September 10, 2023, in this image released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency on September 12, 2023. Pyongyang and Moscow have denied that North Korea would supply arms to Russia, which has expended vast stocks of weapons in more than 18 months of war. "The presence of Jo Chun Ryong indicates that North Korea and Russia will conclude some type of agreement for munitions purchases," said Michael Madden, a North Korea leadership expert at the Washington-based Stimson Center. The U.S. State Department said any transfer of arms from North Korea to Russia would violate U.N. Security Council resolutions, which ban any arms transactions with North Korea. Russia had voted, along with China, to approve Security Council resolutions as late as 2017 punishing North Korea for ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests.

Kim’s delegation likely includes his foreign minister, Choe Sun Hui, and his top two military officials – Korean People’s Army Marshals Ri Pyong Chol and Pak Jong Chon. Other officials identified in North Korean state media photos may hint at what Kim might seek from Putin and what he would be willing to give. U.S. officials released intelligence last week that North Korea and Russia were arranging a meeting between their leaders. After decades of a complicated, hot-and-cold relationship, Russia and North Korea have been drawing closer since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Both Russian and North Korean officials denied such claims.

Private equity firms are looking at Statista ahead of a formal sale process, which is likely to kick off later next year, the sources told Reuters. Only once this transaction is finished will a Statista process begin, they added. Asam sits alongside Statista in Stroeer's data-as-a-service and e-commerce division, which it has signalled as non-core to its advertising business. Statista is viewed as non-core because the rest of Stroeer operates out-of-home advertising, online advertising and billboards across Germany. LONDON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Carlyle (CG.O) is weighing options for its UK video games maker Jagex, a business which could be valued as high as 1 billion pounds ($1.25 billion), two people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Why Brits don't tip
  + stars: | 2023-08-28 | by ( Sophie Kiderlin | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
While Americans are questioning if there are any places left they aren't expected to tip at, those in other countries are watching with confusion. "Most establishments will add a discretionary charge automatically," Laura Windsor, founder of an etiquette academy in the U.K., told CNBC Make It. If such a charge appears on your bill, there's no need to tip, although it's always an option. If a tip isn't automatically added, customers usually leave an extra 10-20% of the total bill for workers, Windsor said. But there are some circumstances in which Brits would never tip but Americans always would, Bryant pointed out.

NASA's supersonic passenger flights are getting closer
  + stars: | 2023-08-25 | by ( Julia Buckley | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Since the 2003 end of Concorde, of course, flitting quickly across the Atlantic has been a thing of the past. Flights between London and New York take around eight hours, or closer to seven in the other direction. But now, the thought of supersonic travel has been mooted again – by none other than NASA, which reckons that New York-London flight could take as little as 90 minutes in the future. However, NASA is developing “quiet” supersonic aircraft, called X-59s, as part of its Quesst mission. Lockheed MartinSimilar studies to the ones done now, which were carried out a decade ago, shaped the development of the X-59 aircraft, according to Lori Ozoroski, project manager for NASA’s Commercial Supersonic Technology Project.

NASA asked private companies to figure out how to make commercial supersonic flight "a reality." Mach 2 to 4 planes, flying up to 3,045 mph, could be used on 50 established flight routes, per NASA. This comes as NASA is starting to test its own X-59 supersonic plane to make sonic booms quieter. To make supersonic flight a reality, it needs to become quieterThe news comes as NASA begins testing its own supersonic plane. NASA/Lockheed MartinThis is an important experiment because non-military supersonic flight over land has been banned by federal regulations for over 50 years in the US.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 17 (Reuters) - Wall Street's top regulator is set next week to adopt new transparency rules for the $20-trillion private investment fund industry, according to an official notice, acting on a proposal that has drawn sharp industry objections. In early 2022, the SEC proposed a set of changes for private fund advisers that would, among other things, require them to produce quarterly statements on performance and fees and submit to annual audits. Under current rules, some broker-dealers who perform proprietary trades on exchanges of which they aren't members need not join FINRA. The proposal would now require FINRA membership for such broker-dealers unless they are members of national securities exchanges and carry no customer accounts.

CNN —Judges are being forced into an unprecedented and perilous spot in the middle of an already tempestuous presidential campaign because of rising acrimony over the criminal trials of Donald Trump. Indeed, Trump and his allies are already framing the four indictments against him as an example of election interference. Smith’s prosecutors implicitly admitted this in arguing in the federal election subversion case that there was an overriding national interest in avoiding unnecessary delays – given the identity of the accused. Thorny questions judges must addressThe fateful decisions that judges will be called on to make go far beyond when the trials take place. For instance, one of his lawyers argued that Smith’s election subversion case cannot be fairly tried in Washington, where Trump won only 5% of the vote.
