CNN —It is another coin-flip in a conflict punctuated with at least annual reminders of how frail Vladimir Putin’s Russia truly is. It is purposefully unclear exactly where Ukraine’s forces are. It is also unclear where Ukrainian forces are digging in and where they are just racing through. This time it is Putin’s own FSB, who couldn’t keep control of the borders, in Putin’s war of choice. Residents of an apartment building damaged after shelling by the Ukrainian side stand near the building in Kursk, Russia, on Sunday.

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange during afternoon trading on July 26, 2024. Stocks have endured a brutal stretch, with the Nasdaq now flirting with correction territory since reaching an all-time high on July 10. Even so, a long-awaited rotation out of tech and into small caps — a trend that kicked off a few weeks ago — could still have legs. While all indexes have taken a beating in recent trading sessions, the Russell 2000 had shown signs of life before the so-called carry trade and worries about the U.S. economy disrupted its best run in years. What that means for youTwo things need to happen for small caps to regain momentum.

In the 1960s, Susan Womer Katzev, a marine illustrator, and her husband, the archaeologist Michael L. Katzev, spent two summers diving with a team beneath the lapping waves of the Mediterranean off Cyprus. Their quarry was an ancient shipwreck on the sandy ocean floor discovered just years earlier by a man foraging for sponge. After more than 2,000 years underwater, much of its hull and cargo — old plates, coins, amphoras that once held wine and others that still held almonds — were remarkably intact. Mrs. Katzev’s drawings and photographs helped document a discovery that revealed not only ancient trading behaviors but also a wealth of information about how the Greeks built ships. For decades, her and her husband’s efforts have been heralded for their central role in establishing nautical archaeology as a field.

It was an autumn Saturday in 1997, and Promise Keepers, a fast-growing conservative Christian men’s ministry that some warned was a covert political project, had gathered at its biggest event ever. “Why are we here?” Mr. Phillips, then the organization’s president, asked the hundreds of thousands of men in attendance. “Is it to demonstrate political might? Is it to take back the nation by imposing our religious values on others? This weekend, a much smaller group of Promise Keepers gathered in Tulsa, Okla., at a very different moment for evangelicals — with less decisive answers to those questions.

How to increase your attention span amid digital overload

While a dwindling attention span is not due to a personal failing (despite individual variability) a majority of the time, experts say there are changes you can make to regain control over your mind. “Tech companies and ad marketing companies use this information to construct profiles about us, and then they design algorithms that are targeted to capture our attention,” Mark said. “We have a tank of attentional resources (that) gets drained when we keep switching our attention,” Mark said. Additionally, he suggested using an app that places time limits on social media or websites you find yourself addicted to using. “The way I feel at the moment is like somebody is pouring itching powder over us all day,” Hari said.

Brian Kemp has shown Republicans how they win in the increasingly purple swing state. I just want them to do their job for Georgia," Trump said of the Kemps during an August 3rd rally in Atlanta. But Trump's renewed feud with Kemp illustrates how, at any moment, the former president can harm his own standing. Unlike Harris, Trump is relying far more on outside groups to push the type of canvassing and get the out efforts expected of a presidential campaign. On Friday, Kemp offered another olive branch while jokingly comparing Trump to Tropical Storm Debby, which slammed the state.

Mortgage interest rates dropped last week to the lowest level since May 2023, causing a surge in mortgage demand from both homebuyers and especially current homeowners. Total mortgage application volume rose 6.9% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. "Despite the downward movement in rates, purchase activity only saw small gains, with an increase in conventional purchase applications offset by decreases in government purchase applications. "This is how things often play out when the bond market forces a quick move to extreme rate levels. For example, several of the biggest drops in daily mortgage rates have followed quick moves to long-term highs," wrote Matthew Graham, chief operating officer at Mortgage News Daily.

Park your cash in a high-yield savings accountA common financial mistake people in their 20s make is letting their savings sit in a low-yield checking or savings account. Keep in mind that online banks offer most high-yield savings accounts, so you won't have access to a physical branch. Many online high-yield savings accounts, like Discover, allow you to manage multiple savings accounts under one login, making this strategy even more convenient.

Republicans rush to try to define Tim Walz

CNN —Republicans moved quickly Tuesday to try to define Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, whom Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen as her running mate. “She found a 60-year-old White guy who has the same crazy ideas she does,” one of the advisers said. CNN —Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva said she’s “finally being treated as a human being” following her release from Russian detention in a historic prisoner exchange between Washington and the Kremlin last week. “I’ve been waking up from that nightmare,” Kurmasheva told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” in her first television interview since her release. Kurmasheva rushed into the arms of her husband and daughters on the tarmac after greeting Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden. The US-backed Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist had been detained in October 2023 and found guilty of spreading false information about the Russian army – charges her family and employer deny. Days later, at the Republican National Convention, the evangelist Franklin Graham endorsed Mr. Trump from the stage, saying that “God spared his life.”But the idea of Mr. Trump as chosen by God has infuriated those evangelicals who believe that he stands in direct opposition to their faith. Their existence highlights an often-overlooked fact about the American religious landscape: Evangelicals are not a monolith. The troubling ascendancy of white Christian nationalism has galvanized evangelicals for whom following Jesus demands speaking truth to power, as well as building the kingdom of heaven on earth in actionable ways. Although this broader evangelical movement is often referred to as the evangelical left, it adheres to no party. “This isn’t about being a Democrat or a Republican,” Jim Wallis, an evangelical Christian pastor, author and justice activist, told me.

CNN —Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin abruptly revoked a plea deal for the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks and his co-conspirators, and he relieved the overseer in charge after years of effort to reach an agreement to bring the cases to a close. Prosecutors in the case had been discussing the possibility of a plea deal for more than two years, which would have avoided a lengthy trial complicated by questions over the admissibility of evidence obtained during torture. The US had said it would seek the death penalty for Mohammed. US criminal courts for decades have dealt with high profile terror trials, including with death sentences, which Holder had authorized. “They were dealt a bad hand by political hacks and ideologues who lost faith in our justice system.
