CNN —Two powerful documentaries explore different aspects of Black history this week, in each case shedding light on misrepresented or under-covered chapters. Presented by Barack Obama’s company under its Netflix deal, “Descendant” examines the discovery of a long-sunk ship that brought enslaved Africans to Alabama, while “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks” reclaims a figure whose legacy was too often characterized as the product of tired feet. Rosa Parks” highlights the selflessness of its subject and seeks to provide a detailed portrait of a woman who, through the vagaries of history, was frequently reduced to a symbol. Parks, rather, wanted – indeed devoted her life to fighting for – justice and equality. “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks” premieres October 19 on Peacock.

The problem with ‘Black trauma porn’“Black trauma porn” – much like “disaster porn” or “poverty porn” – generally refers to graphic depictions of violence against Black people that are intended to elicit strong emotional responses. The implication is that these images can be needlessly traumatizing to Black viewers for whom violence is an inescapable fact of life. “There’s a difference between telling a story of Black trauma and telling a story that is ‘Black trauma porn.’”How Till avoids the trap of ‘trauma porn’What, then, is the line between a story of Black trauma and “Black trauma porn?”For Young, the distinguishing factor is context. Put bluntly, is that depiction of Black trauma intended to appeal to the sympathies of White people? It’s notable that many of the recent projects deemed to be “Black trauma porn” have been the work of Black creatives – an obvious reminder that Black people are not a monolith.

Yet, in “Till,” filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu offers viewers a different window into Emmett’s life through the perspective of his poised and graceful mother, Mamie Till-Mobley (Danielle Deadwyler). But for Black mothers like Mamie, this is a different sort of anxiety. Through Deadwyler’s powerful performance, viewers will feel the palpable fear of Black mothers knowing they can never fully protect their Black children in white America. It is a manic fury that destroys Black lives and inflicts irreparable harm on our community, especially on the psyches of Black mothers. But for Black mothers like Mamie, this is a different sort of anxiety.

‘Till” spares us scenes of the lynching of Emmett Till , but the film is difficult to bear anyway: When confronted with the sight of his coffin, his mother keens with such sorrow that it’s piercing and spectral, a wail to reverberate down the ages. Bo Till , as he was known to his family, was an eager 14-year-old from Chicago whose mother, Mamie, allowed him to visit his cousins and great-uncle in Mississippi in the summer of 1955 for a sampling of rural life. But four days after an encounter with a woman who co-owned a store in Money, Miss., Till was dragged out of his relatives’ house at gunpoint, beaten, and shot in the head before his body was dumped in the Tallahatchie River.

CNN —Getting the delicate balance of the story mostly right, “Till” captures how Mamie Till Mobley turned the inconsolable grief over the murder of her son, Emmett, into resolve and activism.
