Can Couture Be More Socially Responsible?
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( Dana Thomas | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On a cold evening in March, a cement-floored warehouse in the gritty Paris suburb of Fontenay-sous-Bois played host to a different kind of couture fashion show. A third was dressed in a white silk strapless gown, gathered on the hip, that was embroidered with blue and pink posies. Unlike traditional couture, as presented on runways in Paris this week, these clothes weren’t sewn by seasoned artisans or made from precious new materials. The bronze jacket was fashioned from a secondhand pair of Etro men’s pants and embroidered with thin chains from a company that had gone bankrupt. The tangerine dress was made from neckties of decommissioned uniforms of the Aéroports de Paris.

Rahul Mishra’s Ethos Is ‘Slow Fashion’

It took Rahul Mishra six years to sell his first bridal lehenga, a three-piece skirt, blouse and scarf ensemble from the Indian subcontinent. In April, the 43-year-old fashion designer, who is based in Delhi, India, made headlines for dressing Zendaya in a shimmery blue sari at the opening of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Center in Mumbai. (He has also previously dressed Gigi Hadid, Viola Davis and Priyanka Chopra.) In 2020, he became the first Indian designer to show at Paris Haute Couture Week, and he has gone back every year since. Weddings are “red carpet” events for people who aren’t celebrities, he said — especially in Indian culture, where weddings often span multiple days, requiring many outfits for a long list of guests.

When did Marc Jacobs, erstwhile downtown darling turned New York fashion éminence grise, become a philosopher of the modern condition? And, on Monday, in a show at the New York Public Library, a three-minute meditation on the abbreviated attention span generated by our digital lives and the looming future of A.I. Thirty seconds for the models — 29 of them — to march in one direction. Thirty more seconds to march out again in the other direction. And then a minute or so at the beginning and end for people to realize what had just gone on.

And in November 2001, the hotel heiress made a fashion statement that etched itself in the annals of noughties style. To top it off, she wore a tiara, applied a glossy pink lip and pink eyeshadow and clutched onto a furry Barbie-branded handbag. At just 20 years old, Paris Hilton — pictured here with Nicole Richie as the pair attended a Britney Spears concert in Las Vegas — was already being dubbed a culture-defining noughties "It Girl." Marigo Mihalos Sfaelos brought many outfits to her four-day, event-filled wedding in Karpathos, Greece, last year. There was the silk citrine Greek goddess-style dress, a floral appliqué Estee Couture bridal gown, and a disco ball-inspired floor-length dress for the after party. “I wanted it to be a bridal look that stood out, and the bride should stand out,” said Mrs. Mihalos Sfaelos, 35, a senior director of talent relations at SiriusXM radio in New York. “You can’t just wear a white bathing suit.”Other brides seem to feel the same way, especially with destination weddings, and designers and stylists are paying close attention. Today’s bridal swimwear are not just fashion-forward white bathing suits — they are beaded and bedazzled, fancy and frilly, lacy and Lycra-fitted, and custom made.

CNN —Did someone say Wingardium Leviosa? “Harry Potter” fans are asking whether Emma Watson’s new dress may be the result of some Hogwarts wizardry. The star, who played Hermione Granger in the blockbuster movies, posted a picture of herself wearing the gravity-defying sky-blue gown on Instagram on Monday. Jump Trading exec Peter Deaner is leaving the systematic trading firm, people familiar with the matter said. Senior executive departures are relatively uncommon at the press-shy trading firm. Jump Trading Group's top executive in Europe is leaving the systematic trading firm after more than a decade. "Pete will be retiring from the industry in 2024, moving on from Jump Trading roughly at the end of Q1," the spokesperson told Insider in an email. Jump Trading International, the London-based subsidiary of the Chicago trading firm, has grown substantially since Deaner joined in the summer of 2012.

CNN —Attending the 2023 Tony Awards in New York Sunday night, Lupita Nyong’o arrived in timeless formalwear: a sharp black velvet dinner jacket and flared trousers. Nyong’o was wearing a custom breastplate cast and molded on her body by Misha Japanwala, a Pakistani artist and designer whose subversive sculptures are already increasingly attracting an impressive celebrity clientele. (An exhibition of Japanwala’s work is also currently on display at the Hannah Traore art gallery in New York.) Misha Japanwala's work "asks viewers to see the body exactly as it is," the artist writes on her website. Japanwala’s work, however, presents a very different picture.

The Man Who Turned the World on to the Genius of Fungi
  + stars: | 2023-06-08 | by ( Jennifer Kahn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Plants managed to leave water and grow on land only because of their collaboration with fungi, which acted as their root systems for millions of years. Even today, roughly 90 percent of plants and nearly all the world’s trees depend on fungi, which supply crucial minerals by breaking down rock and other substances. They can also be a scourge, eradicating forests — Dutch elm disease and chestnut blight are fungi — and killing humans. Without fungi, matter wouldn’t decay; the planet would be buried under layers of dead and unrotted trees and vegetation. But where “Fantastic Fungi” fell decidedly into the old-school, ’shroom-head camp, Sheldrake’s book is more embracing and more optimistic.

Jamal Murray Lets His Play Do the Talking

But on Wednesday night, Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray walked into the interview room after winning Game 3 of the N.B.A. finals wearing an unassuming white T-shirt and baggy gray sweatpants. A few glints here and there — a glittering bracelet and large stud earrings — added a little sparkle. There are ways in which he seems unassuming, perhaps because he is often overshadowed by his teammate Nikola Jokic. But when you really pay attention, particularly throughout this year’s playoffs, his play sparkles through those perceptions.

But the sale came at a time when the bridal industry was beginning to change. While David's Bridal offered some pricier gowns, it was known primarily for affordable wedding dresses, and the lower end of the bridal market had become saturated. Plus, high-end designers had started to launch their own couture bridal lines and brides were starting to spend thousands of dollars on their dream dress. Ms. Morales said that most of her clients who request custom designs are the children of immigrants or have immigrated to the United States themselves. Many, she added, “owe their journeys to their families, and they want to honor that.”Like Ms. Morales, Emiah Youman began customizing graduation caps when she was in college. Ms. Youman, who started selling them through her business, Custom Couture by Emiah, in 2019, now also offers premade styles (starting at $50), as well as hand-painted designs (starting at $210). Ms. Youman, who lives in Washington, said she has received about 100 orders this year. Her custom designs can take up to three months to complete, in part because she is running her business while attending law school at Howard University.
But there's a similar legacy battle going on inside LVMH, the French luxury house run by Bernard Arnault. The children of the world's richest man are vying for influence within LVMH in a "Darwinian" fight. Showrunner Jesse Armstrong says his fictional Roy family is inspired by several famous dynasties, such as the Hearsts — the family behind Hearst Communications — and the Redstones — the controlling influence behind Paramount Global. There's still plenty of rivalry between the progeny of Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury goods behemoth LVMH and world's richest person. The Roy family of "Succession."

CNN —Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, did not make an appearance at the Met Gala, despite the event’s theme honoring her late owner. Doja Cat and Jared Leto both channeled the blue cream Birman with their Met Gala looks, transforming into Choupette in a mishmash of camp, couture and cat. The Grammy-winning rapper wore a silvery hooded Oscar de la Renta gown — complete with cat ears — along with feline facial prosthetics and sharpened talons on her nails. Choupette, 11, was expected by many to attend this year’s event given how important she was to Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. But she opted to “stay peacefully and cozy at home,” her agents said Monday, rather than hog the spotlight at the Met.

Karl Lagerfeld, the German-born fashion designer who is the subject of this year’s Met Gala, liked to court controversy, his achievements on the runway often outshone by offensive blunders and tone-deaf remarks. The set piece, sculpted from 240 tons of snow and ice reportedly sheared off a glacier in Sweden, was intended as a comment on global warming. As vividly inscribed on fashion’s consciousness was his spring 2015 Chanel show in Paris, staged as a feminist protest. But the joke seemed to be on the designer when, in 1994, he sent Claudia Schiffer down the runway in a Chanel dress embroidered with a sacred Muslim text, igniting an international controversy. Mr. Lagerfeld, who said at the time that he had no idea what the text meant, issued a rare apology.

Social Security beneficiaries who call the agency's toll-free number may face hold times of more than 30 minutes. Long lines and shortened hours are common at many of the agency's field offices where beneficiaries may seek in-person assistance. Moreover, applicants for disability benefits face waits of more than six months for decisions from the agency, a panel of experts from the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents more than 40,000 Social Security Administration employees, said Monday. The service delays facing the program's approximately 67 million beneficiaries are signs of "an agency in crisis," according to Rich Couture, Council 215 president at the American Federation of Government Employees. AFGE leaders spoke out about the Social Security Administration's diminishing services amid funding constraints that have lasted for more than a decade.
