Nearly 1 in 3 Americans may have an undiagnosed iron deficiency, a problem that can lead to fatigue, brain fog and difficulty concentrating, a new study suggests. An analysis of data from more than 8,000 adults in the U.S. revealed that 14% had low iron blood levels, a condition known as absolute iron deficiency, while 15% had the right iron levels but their bodies couldn’t use the essential mineral properly, known as functional iron deficiency, according to the report published Tuesday in JAMA Network Open. Doctors don’t typically screen adults for iron deficiency, which is why the condition has been overlooked in many people. There had been hints in other studies suggesting iron deficiency might be more widespread than doctors assume. The rates of iron deficiency between men and women are more similar after the age of menopause, experts said.

SHENZHEN, China — Chinese vendor Yin Xinwei sometimes makes close to $1,400 a day selling low-priced pill boxes, barbecue spits and other items to U.S. online consumers. Each year hundreds of millions of packages, mostly from Chinese platforms, are sent directly to American consumers eager to take advantage of rock-bottom prices on clothing, electronics and other products. That could mean painful times ahead for the Chinese sellers that supply the platforms — and higher prices for American consumers. Chinese state media has criticized the proposal as protectionist and say it will hurt American consumers. Yin used to sell to Chinese consumers but has given up his domestic business to focus entirely on the overseas market.

A hurricane watch and warnings of storm surges up to 15 feet high were issued Tuesday for almost all of Florida's western coastline as a potential tropical storm moves across the Caribbean Sea and towards the Gulf Coast. The hurricane watch extends from Indian Pass in north-west Florida near Panama City, down to Englewood, and includes Tampa Bay. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are now in effect for the entire western coast of the Sunshine State. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible, and is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated onslaught of tropical-storm-force winds and conditions. Outside of the U.S., a hurricane watch is also in effect for parts of eastern Mexico from Cabo Catoche to Tulum and Pinar del Río in Cuba.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been moved to a section of the New York City jail where convicted cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried is being held, sources confirm to NBC News. The area of the detention center is reserved for detainees who require special protection, three sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Combs, 54, was arrested last week and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal jail that has a notorious reputation for violence and poor care. Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, was convicted in November and was sentenced in March to 25 years in federal prison. Combs has not been convicted and has pleaded not guilty, but a federal judge on Sept. 17 ordered that he be held in jail pending trial.

Some countries are fairly straightforward about their requirements for citizenship through jus sanguinis. Hungary offers citizenship based on jus sanguinis with some caveats, too. “When both of my parents got their Hungarian citizenship around four years ago, it made it easier for me to get it,” said Koszorus, 41, who received his Hungarian citizenship this summer, less than a year after he started the paperwork and application process. And a private Facebook group called Dual US-Italian Citizenship has more than 70,000 members and is among many other resources available to people who think they might have a blood right path to Italian citizenship. Florida-based travel writer Terry Ward lives in Tampa and has the blood right to Italian citizenship through her paternal great-great-grandfather.

Effort to change Nebraska’s electoral vote system blockedA Republican state senator’s opposition to a law changing how Nebraska allocates its electoral votes drew anger from former President Donald Trump. State Sen. Mike McDonnell wrote in a letter that he is opposed to changing Nebraska’s system — which awards electoral votes by congressional district — to a winner-take-all approach so close to Election Day. Under a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska’s electoral votes.

Tens of thousands of people fled southern Lebanon on Tuesday as Israel intensified an aerial assault that inflicted the country's deadliest day since war nearly two decades ago, while Hezbollah launched a new barrage of cross-border fire. Nearly 500 people were killed in Lebanon on Monday, according to local health officials, marking the deadliest Israeli bombardment of the country since Israel's 34-day war with Hezbollah in 2006. Mahmoud Zayyat / AFP - Getty ImagesThe Israeli military had issued warnings for residents in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate certain areas, spurring thousands of people to flee their homes. Scenes of families fleeing southern Lebanon and of fiery explosions filling the skyline fueled global fears of an all-out regional conflict. However, in a briefing Monday, an Israeli military official said a halt in fire from Hezbollah would not be enough to end Israel’s strikes on Lebanon.

The pharmaceutical executive who was once New York City’s Covid czar was fired Monday, days after he admitted participating in “private gatherings” that were prohibited during the height of the pandemic, a federal filing shows. Varma was the company’s executive vice president and chief medical officer, the filing says. Varma acknowledged the prohibited gatherings after a conservative podcaster posted video last week of what appeared to be hidden camera recordings that showed Varma describing them. Varma's spokesman previously said that he was a part-time City Hall consultant at the time and that all participants were vaccinated. “I served in City Hall between April 2020 — May 2021,” Varma said in the statement.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin's miraculous comeback reached another milestone Monday as he grabbed his first career interception. Hamlin is in his fourth season with Buffalo, but it’s his first season as a starting safety. He earned the spot in training camp after the Bills parted ways with their previous starting safeties in the offseason. Hamlin’s first career interception came 20 months after his near-fatal injury against the Cincinnati Bengals, which was also a "Monday Night Football" game. It’s another thing to come back off of what he came back off of, right?” Bills coach Sean McDermott said before the team’s season opener.

Self-compassionate touch, which can be practiced anywhere, can include stroking the upper arms like a hug. Milko/E+/Getty ImagesThe study showed a single 20-second session of self-compassionate touch significantly reduced stress, increased kindness to the participant and improved mental well-being. However, Hafeez noted that while self-compassionate touch showed similar mental health benefits to long-term therapy, it is not a complete substitute for it — especially among those with diagnosed mental health conditions. Instead, she advised people to think of self-compassionate touch as an added tool for their mental health toolbox. The study results showed the more people make self-compassionate touch a habit, the greater the mental health benefits.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the devices “a huge problem,” adding they were still investigating whether the shooters used a switch or another type of weapon. “Machine gun conversion devices have no place in our community,” US Attorney Prim Escalona said. Woodfin, the Birmingham mayor, noted that conversion devices are illegal federally but not under state law, and he called on the state legislature to ban the devices. Last week he participated in a demonstration at a Montgomery shooting range in which trained firearm experts tried (and failed) to aim while using the conversion devices. For the eleventh consecutive year, Switzerland topped the list as the world's most talent-competitive country, according to the IMD 2024 World Talent Ranking, signaling its strong and stable talent pool despite the rapidly changing global work landscape. The ranking measures how economies around the world perform when it comes to sustaining their pool of talent. This data is broken down into three buckets: investment in and development of homegrown talent, appeal (the extent to which a country taps into the overseas talent pool) and readiness (the availability of skills and competencies in the talent pool), according to the report. Switzerland remains at the forefront of talent competitiveness, topping the list since the ranking's inception in 2014. Singapore's steady rise is driven by the readiness of its talent pool, rated as No.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — California avocado growers are fuming this week about a U.S. decision to hand over pest inspections of Mexican orchards to the Mexican government. Because the United States also grows avocados, U.S. inspectors observe orchards and packing houses in Mexico to ensure exported avocados don’t carry pests that could hurt U.S. crops. The letter added, "We are looking for specifics as to why you have concluded that substituting APHIS inspectors with Mexican government inspectors is in our best interest." Only the states of Michoacan and Jalisco are certified to export avocados to the United States. Some packers in Mexico buy avocados from other, non-certified states, and try to pass them off as being from Michoacan.
