The new GM furloughs include 130 at its Parma, Ohio Metal Center and 34 at its Marion, Indiana Metal Center. (AP) — Ross Chastain, the runner-up in NASCAR's championship last season, crashed out of Sunday's playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway in a collision with fellow title contenders Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell. Chastain was in a pack of cars racing to the flag that marked the end of the first stage. Busch hit the wall trying to avoid running into the back of Stenhouse, just as Chastain tried to slide through the middle to advance his position. That caused the Chevrolet from Trackhouse Racing to hit the wall and take a second hit from Bell. Chastain, who won at Talladega last year, has struggled in his four previous starts on Charlotte's hybrid road course/oval track.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union says its two-week strike against Detroit automakers will spread to 7,000 more workers at a Ford plant in Chicago and a General Motors assembly factory near Lansing, Michigan. Union President Shawn Fain told workers on a video appearance Friday that negotiations haven’t broken down but Ford and GM have refused to make meaningful progress. The GM plant in Delta Township, near Lansing, makes large crossover SUVs such as the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. The Chicago Ford plant makes the Ford Explorer and Explorer Police Interceptors, as well as the Lincoln Aviator SUV. The union went on strike Sept. 15 when it couldn’t reach agreements on new contracts with the companies.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is expanding its strike to additional facilities of automakers Ford and GM, the UAW head said on Friday, adding that additional Stellantis members will not be called to go on strike. “We knew it was unlikely this was going to be quick,” Fain said on a livestreamed update. But, he said, “We’re excited about this momentum at Stellantis and hope it continues.”UAW President Shawn Fain said that Ford and GM have not made enough progress in meeting union demands, despite a strike that has gone on for 15 days. A week ago it added a series of 38 parts and distribution centers operated in 20 states by GM and Stellantis but did not expand the strike at Ford, saying that automaker had made significant progress in negotiations. Fain said Chrysler-parent Stellantis was spared from additional strikes because of recent progress in negotiations with that company. "To restore the balance of power, we have to restore the strike," Fain said Friday, citing several other UAW strikes aside from the Detroit automakers. The UAW originally initiated work stoppages on Sept. 15 at three assembly plants — one each for the Detroit automakers. At that time, the UAW spared Ford from expanded strikes, citing progress in those negotiations.

But few of them besides Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 are selling at high enough volumes to support a full-scale assembly plant, according to a Reuters analysis of U.S. EV sales data for the first six months of 2023. But that market share was divided up among 103 different models, according to the Alliance's latest quarterly report on the EV market. The U.S. automaker, like several rivals, has committed billions to build additonal EV and battery plants in the U.S. In a media presentation on Tuesday, Cox Automotive noted that Tesla has surrendered some share of U.S. EV sales this year as more entrants hit the market, but still commands nearly two-thirds of all EV sales. Cox estimated that EV sales will rise to 8% of total U.S. vehicle sales in the third quarter from about 6.5% a year ago.

Roadway deaths in the U.S. are mounting despite government test data showing vehicles have been getting safer. Subaru, which has performed well in IIHS pedestrian crash avoidance tests, considers visibility its first line of safety, according to spokesperson Todd Hill. Thanks to vehicle improvements, seatbelt laws and other changes, fatal crashes in the U.S. trended downward for decades, hitting a low of 29,867 in 2011. Government estimates of fatal crashes in 2022 show a 43% increase to 42,795 — partially thanks to increases in speeding and drunk driving and decreases in seatbelt use. Fatal crashes also increased as a percent of total miles driven.

DETROIT (AP) — Canadian auto workers say General Motors will be their next target after members ratified a new three-year labor contract with Ford. Unifor, which represents about 4,300 workers at three GM facilities in Canada, said Monday it reached a strong deal with Ford and now will try to negotiate a pattern agreement with GM. Workers at Ford of Canada ratified a new deal on Sunday that raises base hourly pay for production workers by almost 20% over three years, and by more than 25% for trade workers. But, according to the union, that figure doesn’t include compounding of each annual increase or the initial cost-of-living increase, both of which should increase workers’ actual pay. The UAW has been on strike for 11 days with targeted factory and warehouse shutdowns at GM, Ford and Stellantis, maker of Jeep, Chrysler, Ram and other vehicles.

The strategy of choking parts delivery increases problems for some dealers who say it already had been difficult to source some components. Massachusetts voters in 2020 approved a ballot initiative that gives independent repair shops access to diagnostic data that newer cars can send directly to dealers and manufacturers, in order to allow consumers to seek repairs outside dealerships. The Massachusetts attorney general's office said earlier appreciated "NHTSA’s clarification today that our state law is not preempted by federal law." Automakers must comply with the state law, the office said. Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan praised NHTSA's statement "clarifying that automakers can safely comply with Massachusetts' right to repair law and share vehicle data with independent repair shops."
