Britain’s governing Conservative Party on Friday lost two of its safest parliamentary seats in a significant and ominous setback for the prime minister, Rishi Sunak, who must call a general election that will decide his fate within the next 15 months. Voting in the Conservative strongholds of Mid Bedfordshire and Tamworth took place on Thursday to replace two of the party’s lawmakers — one of whom quit after an allegation of sexual assault — and came as Britain’s health care system faces acute strain and its economy stagnates amid high inflation. While that was always likely to put the Conservatives under pressure, the double defeat in the party’s heartlands was a stunning blow to Mr. Sunak and a striking success for the opposition Labour Party and its leader, Keir Starmer. In Tamworth, northeast of Birmingham, Labour overturned a majority of almost 20,000 in the last general election to win narrowly, while in Mid Bedfordshire, around 50 miles north of London, the main opposition party overcame an even bigger deficit to seize the seat.

The report reflects the uneasy state of new construction, with builders facing the strain of high mortgage rates and increased costs for building materials. “To keep buyers interested, many builders have been offering upgrades or buying down mortgage rates, but rising home prices coupled with mortgage rates approaching 8% means there will be fewer buyers in the market to entice,” Bright MLS Chief Economist Lisa Sturtevant said. It is the week’s second report on the state of the new housing market. On Tuesday, the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index revealed that builder confidence fell for the third consecutive month in October. "Today’s September housing starts report reflects the fragility of the real estate market,” said Travis Hodges, managing director at insurance broker VIU by HUB.

The man who has long been linked to the 2005 disappearance of the American teenager Natalee Holloway described in court documents released on Wednesday how he had brutally attacked her on a beach in Aruba after she rejected his advances. It was the first time that details of Ms. Holloway’s disappearance have been made public, and it came after Joran van der Sloot, a 36-year-old Dutchman, agreed to provide “full, complete, accurate, and truthful information” about it in exchange for a 20-year sentence on extortion and wire fraud charges. As part of a plea agreement, Mr. van der Sloot pleaded guilty on Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama in Birmingham to charges that he had tried to extort Ms. Holloway’s mother, prosecutors said. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In court, Judge Anna M. Manasco said that as part of the sentencing decision, Mr. van der Sloot had confessed to killing Ms. Holloway and disposing of her remains, The Associated Press reported.

Van der Sloot, 36, was extradited to Alabama in June from a prison in Peru, where he has been serving a 28-year sentence for murdering another woman in Lima. Eyewitnesses said she was last seen leaving a bar in a car with van der Sloot on the night of her disappearance. Van der Sloot has reached a plea deal with U.S. prosecutors that require him to also truthfully disclose what happened to Natalee Holloway, according to John Q. Kelly, a lawyer for the Holloway family. A public defender representing van der Sloot and a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office did not respond to questions about a plea deal. In 2012, van der Sloot was convicted in Peru after he confessed to beating, strangling and suffocating Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old Peruvian business student, in May 2010.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Court records filed Friday indicate Joran van der Sloot, the chief suspect in Natalee Holloway’s 2005 disappearance, intends to plead guilty in a federal case accusing him of trying to extort money from the missing teen’s mother. A federal judge set an Oct. 18 plea and sentencing hearing for van der Sloot in Birmingham, Alabama. The Alabama teen was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot, a student at an international school on the island. Van der Sloot was identified as a main suspect and was detained for questioning but no charges were filed in the case. U.S. prosecutors say that in 2010, van der Sloot sought money from Beth Holloway to disclose the location of her daughter's body.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — First Tom Brady, and now Wayne Rooney. Rooney, a Manchester United great who previously held the record for most goals for England's national team, was appointed manager of the second-division team on Wednesday — only weeks after Brady came onboard as a minority owner. The club parted ways with former manager John Eustace on Monday, leading to some criticism on social media. Rooney was manager of English club Derby from 2020-22. In a stellar playing career, Rooney won five Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, along with a host of other trophies.

On Monday, LA28 organisers formally asked that flag football for both the men's and women's competitions as well as four other sports be added to the event. It would mark the Olympic debut for flag football, a game that looks similar to tackle football, with passing and receiving, but requires little protective equipment, with play stopping when a defender pulls a cloth flag from the waist of an opponent. "But I will tell you that through this process a number of great young stars of the league have said how great it would be to represent their country and play flag." O'Reilly said one appeal of flag football is that it is low cost and that almost anyone can play it. "The Olympics in LA would be a tremendous boost to flag football around the world and in this country."

The percentage of Black workers in the auto industry today is more than double their share of the workforce overall. But the decline in US auto jobs and the erosion of unions have hit Black workers hardest. Black workers are likelier to belong to unions, in any industry, compared to White and Hispanic workers. Black union workers earn on average 16.4% higher wages than non-union Black workers, and they are likelier to have health care and retirement benefits, studies show. Hard-won gains disappearSoon after Black auto workers broke into better paying jobs, the US auto industry began its long decline, decimating Black communities in particular.

But Venezuela is just one of the many Latin American countries that China is courting. The region presents an attractive investment proposition for China because of its resources and markets, Margaret Myers, director of the Asia and Latin America Program at the U.S.-based think tank Inter-American Dialogue, told CNBC. "In Latin America, China's looking for soy, above all, to address what is a fairly critical food security challenge at home. “Our plan will drive far more growth and opportunity here in the north than a faster train to London ever would,” he said Wednesday. Some of the alternatives Sunak highlighted were predicated on the delivery of HS2, said Henrietta Bailey, CEO of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce. “This is the biggest and most damaging U-turn in the history of UK infrastructure,” the High Speed Rail Group, which represents companies such as Siemens, Hitachi and Bombardier, said in a statement. “The decision … sends a hugely disappointing message about our commitment to completing major infrastructure projects in the UK,” said Stephen Phipson, chief executive of Make UK, which represents manufacturing firms. The country must hope that his latest policy reversal doesn’t deter investors and further undermine a struggling UK economy, perpetuating a doom-loop of weak growth and underinvestment.

London CNN —UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has taken the axe to Britain’s biggest current infrastructure project, despite warnings from business leaders that the U-turn will damage investor confidence in the country. “This means £36 billion of investment in the projects that will make a real difference across our nation,” he added. “Any deviation could result in a loss of investor trust, and this would have a considerable negative impact on the UK. The ambitious HS2 project falls into this category.”The U-turn was also blasted by Richard Walker, the boss of supermarket chain Iceland, and until recently a long-time Conservative Party member. The government’s “evident inability” to deliver on major projects “is devastating to both its credibility and to business confidence,” Walker wrote in The Guardian newspaper Sunday.
