The war provoked by Hamas' attack on Israel has shaken American politics — and put the primary race in her wheelhouse. Iran has long supported Hamas, though U.S. officials say there's no conclusive evidence yet that Iranian agents were involved in the most recent attack. Ron DeSantis proposed state-level sanctions against Iran for its ongoing support of Hamas. Since before the war, Haley has gone after her rivals on issues such as U.S. support for Ukraine against Russia's invasion and how Washington deals with China. And, in keeping with how he treats rivals, Trump has given Haley a nickname, “Birdbrain."

LONDON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - A man who was arrested with a loaded crossbow at Windsor Castle saying he wanted to kill Queen Elizabeth was detained for nine years on Thursday after admitting an offence under the Treason Act and making threats against the late monarch. "He had conceived of killing the queen early in 2021 when he was not psychotic. He took steps to try and get closer to his target and learn useful skills when, again, he was not psychotic," the judge said. The recovered crossbow was a "Supersonic X-bow", the discharged bolt from which has the potential to cause serious or fatal injuries. LONDON (AP) — A Star Wars-obsessed man who was encouraged by a chatbot “girlfriend” to slay Queen Elizabeth II was sentenced Thursday to nine years in prison for taking his plot to Windsor Castle, where he scaled the walls and was caught with a loaded crossbow on Christmas Day 2021. Chail said the assassination was his life's mission, something he'd thought about since adolescence, but had only shared with the artificial-intelligence powered “girlfriend” he named Sarai. Chail called himself “Darth Chailus,” an identity he said he had assumed as a Sith lord, one of an order from the dark side in Star Wars that included Darth Vader. “I am not a terrorist, I am an assassin, a Sikh, a sith,” he had written in a journal. In one chatbot exchange about a week before his arrest, he told Sarai that his purpose was to assassinate the queen.

According to an update posted on the union site: “Unifor is extending negotiations with Ford Motor Company for a 24-hour period. By contrast, Unifor announced if it goes on strike, it will strike all the Ford facilities where it represents members. The union had granted them contract extensions while it focused its negotiations on reaching the best possible deal with Ford. It has not had a strike in its Canadian operations since 1990 and has not had a US strike since 1978. A Canadian strike could be a bigger blow to Ford’s sales than the UAW strike, which is so far is limited to one factory in Michigan in the case of Ford.

CNN —The union representing Canadian autoworkers at Ford has reached a tentative deal with the US automaker, keeping more than 5,000 union members on the job and providing some good news for an industry dealing with unprecedented labor disruptions. Details of the deal between Ford and Unifor, the Canadian union, were not immediately available. “We leveraged our union’s most powerful weapon: the right to strike,” Unifor said in its statement Tuesday evening. The issues in the Canadian labor negotiations greatly mirrored the issues behind the UAW strike against those three automakers. The companies, which are reporting record or near-record profits, all say they have offered the UAW members raises totaling about 20% during the life of the contracts, including immediate 10% raises.

It's called RISC-V, pronounced "risk five" — a rival chip design that is backed by some of Arm's own customers. While analysts told CNBC it's not an immediate threat, Arm itself warned that if it gains traction, it could pose a competitive risk. Arm designs what's known as an instruction set architecture (ISA) for chips known as processors or central processing units (CPUs). RISC-V in recent years has gained support from some of the world's biggest technology companies, many of which are also Arm customers. "Maybe we should have a second source just in case things start not going in our direction, or we have problems with Arm," he added, in reference to the thinking among some Arm customers.

View shows the site where the gigafactory for electric vehicle battery production by Volkswagen Group's battery company PowerCo SE will be built in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada April 21, 2023. REUTERS/Carlos Osorio/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 12 (Reuters) - The Canadian government will take 20 years to recoup the combined C$28.2 billion ($21 billion) subsidies it is offering Volkswagen and Stellantis-LG Electric Solutions (STLAM.MI), to build two electric vehicle (EV) battery plants, the country's budgetary watchdog said on Tuesday. Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux projected that the combined revenue generated from the two plants would only match the production subsidies by 2043, if production starts in 2024. In May, Stellantis stopped constructing its EV battery plant in Windsor, Ontario, saying the Canadian government did not deliver on the committed subsidies. The dispute was resolved after two months of bargaining when the government agreed to provide subsidies similar to the one it gave Volkswagen.

Stellantis plans to expand battery capacity to 400 GWh

REUTERS/Pascal Rossignol/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMILAN, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Carmaker Stellantis (STLAM.MI) aims to expand its battery building capacity to 400 GWh to support growing production of electric vehicles, its head of global propulsion systems said on Friday. We believe we need to go to 400 gigawatt hours of capacity around the world," Bly said during the inaugurating the group's new Battery Technology Center in Turin, Italy. Bly, however, did not specify whether the group planned to build more gigafactories on top of those already announced to expand the capacity. As part of its effort to boost capacity, Stellantis on Friday said it had invested 40 million euros ($43 million) in its Turin's Battery Technology Center, in the Mirafiori complex, which will be focused on in-house testing and development of EV battery packs for upcoming group vehicles. More than 100 people will be employed in the Turin's Battery Technology Center, mostly retrained Stellantis workers, the group said adding that a similar facility for North America was being built in Windsor, Canada.

REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMILAN, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Carmaker Stellantis (STLAM.MI) aims to develop lighter electric vehicle batteries, cutting weights in half to improve sustainability, the group's technology chief said on Friday. Ned Curic said current electric vehicle (EV) batteries were "just too heavy", making vehicles "not compatible" with sustainability purposes. "So what I have in mind and a very hard goal for my team by 2030 is to change the battery weight to at least 50% lighter battery," Curic said during the inauguration of the group's Battery Technology Center in Turin, Italy. "We will have to think about completely new materials, new chemistry, new way of replacing this heavy, heavy, heavy materials to something much lighter," he said. "We are consuming a lot of carbon-based energy in existing systems so moving to electric vehicle systems does allow for a lot more sustainable a future," he added.

LONDON (AP) — With gun salutes and tolling bells, the United Kingdom on Friday marked the anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the ascension of King Charles III, who remembered his mother as a symbol of stability during her 70-year reign. Charles and Queen Camilla observed the anniversary at the family estate in Scotland and attended a service of remembrance at a small church nearby, where the late queen worshipped. Harry is due to attend the Invictus Games for injured soldiers in Germany this weekend, alongside his wife Meghan. The king released a previously unpublished photograph of the queen that shows her at the height of her power at age 42. Her death triggered questions about the future of the monarchy.
