For years, experts have debated what to advise older adults in this situation. Only 27% to 44% of older adults meet these guidelines, according to various surveys. Epidemiologic research suggests that the ideal body mass index (BMI) might be higher for older adults than younger adults. The study’s conclusion: “The WHO healthy weight range may not be suitable for older adults.” Instead, being overweight may be beneficial for older adults, while being notably thin can be problematic, contributing to the potential for frailty. Indeed, an optimal BMI for older adults may be in the range of 24 to 29, Carl Lavie, a well-known obesity researcher, suggested in a separate study reviewing the evidence surrounding obesity in older adults.

As a dietitian and founder of Kids Eat in Color, one of the most common questions parents ask me is how to tell if their children are getting the right nutrients. The unfortunate truth is that many kids today don't consume the proper amount of nutrients that are vital for growth, preventing chronic diseases, and overall health. Fiber and potassium are two big ones. But the No. 1 nutrient that kids in the U.S. aren't getting enough of is vitamin D.How vitamin D deficiency impacts kids' healthHow to increase vitamin D levels in kids

Cottage Cheese Makes a Comeback
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( Dani Blum | More About Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In July, Google searches for “cottage cheese” rose to the highest levels recorded since 2004. “It’s definitely really trendy right now,” said Leah Goebel, a registered dietitian at Northwestern Medicine, adding that cottage cheese contains plenty of nutrients. Compared with other dairy products, cottage cheese is relatively low-calorie. A half-cup serving of full-fat cottage cheese contains around 100 calories, whereas an equal serving of ricotta cheese contains about 190 calories and a three-quarter-cup serving of full-fat Greek yogurt has about 160 calories. Cottage cheese also contains riboflavin, she said, a vitamin that helps our cells grow and produce energy, and phosphorous, which maintains our teeth and bones.

It would ban fake reviews, suppressing negative reviews and paying for positive reviews. Amazon in particular has been dealing with fake reviews on its third-party marketplace for years, suing the administrators of Facebook groups who facilitated the purchase and sale of fake reviews. The commission has taken strong enforcement action in the past on fake reviews, but said it might not be enough without civil penalty authority. Businesses also would not be able to offer any incentives for writing positive reviews and would prohibit company officers and managers from writing reviews without disclosing their roles. They also wouldn’t be able to make company controlled review websites or buy fake followers or views on social media.

The Federal Trade Commission on Friday proposed a new rule that seeks to ban fake online reviews, marking its most aggressive step yet to thwart review fraud. Fake reviews and review abuse have been a persistent issue for online platforms such as Amazon , Google and Yelp . Bad actors often rely on fake reviews to boost their products in search results and drive more sales. Amazon, which has struggled to combat fake reviews on its third-party marketplace, has increasingly gone after fake review brokers and Facebook group administrators in court. The agency has filed several other cases in recent years against companies that used fake reviews to sell products online, and blocked their users from leaving negative reviews.

That number has since fallen to 1.9 pounds of cottage cheese per person in one year in 2021, USDA data shows. But is cottage cheese— or any cheese for that matter— actually good for you? Compared to other cheeses, including American cheese, cottage cheese is a much healthier option because it's less processed, says Shanahan. "Cottage cheese is healthier than American cheese because it's fermented and has some live bacteria in there [like] yogurt has," she says. "I'm not confident to suggest cottage cheese would be significantly different than other types of cheese," Sun tells CNBC Make It.

More and more people are adding fish into their diets for the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. But it may be time to skip the salmon and tuna, and reach for foods lower on the seafood chain like sardines and clams instead. "So, although they are underutilized, they're really good at delivering those sorts of nutrients." Bivalves, like mussels, are also a "really healthy choice," Golden notes, and they're great sources of zinc and calcium. Here's what Golden recommends adding to your diet to replace foods like red meat and farmed salmon.

CNN —The bones of teens and young adults who lost significant weight after bariatric surgery were weaker than those of youth with similar levels of obesity who did not have surgery, a new study found. Despite counseling, teens and young adults who did not undergo weight loss surgery continued to gain weight over those two years, the study found. However, it’s difficult to accurately study bone loss in adolescents and young adults. A study would need to follow teens who underwent surgery for at least 10 years to determine if the bone loss seen in the new study lasts, Inge said. “That’s why we insist that people undergoing weight loss surgery take their multivitamin with calcium and vitamin D every day, just like medicine.”

We used a professional device called a sound level meter to record the decibel levels of common sounds and environments. According to the World Health Organization, average road traffic noise above 53 dB or average aircraft noise exposure above about 45 dB are associated with adverse health effects. This chart shows how many people in the United States may be exposed to various outdoor noise levels, on average. Scientists believe that pronounced fluctuations in noise levels like this might compound the effects on the body. Nighttime noise shows similar inequities.

They worshiped the sun as a god and built temples for it. They danced for it and wrote poems about it. They devoted unfathomable amounts of time, money and effort into studying it, and even built probes that could fly out into space and get a closer look. And yet, the sun is tricky. We need sunlight for vitamin D, and to help regulate our sleep cycles, but it inspires people to go stand up paddle boarding, and then to tell you again and again about how you really have to try stand up paddle boarding.

Lower cholesterol with a plant-based diet, study says

In study particpants, LDL levels dropped 10% and total cholesterol declined 7% for people following a plant-based diet when compared with those who eat both meat and plants, the study found. A plant-based diet can help reduce LDL cholesterol, a new study said. Statin treatment is superior to plant-based diets in reducing fats and cholesterol levels, Frikke-Schmidt said in a statement. In addition, people who transition to a plant-based diet should still be mindful about the kinds of foods they’re consuming. “Not all plant-based diets are equal,” said Aedin Cassidy, professor and director for interdisciplinary research at the Institute for Global Food Security in Queen’s University Belfast, in a statement.
Kohl's shares spiked Wednesday as the struggling retailer posted a surprise profit and affirmed its full-year guidance while it chases a turnaround. Kohl's surprise quarterly profit comes after multiple quarters of disappointing sales and a sinking stock price. Since then, Kohl's has tapped its new CEO Kingsbury, former chief executive of off-price retailer Burlington Stores . That contributed to a big loss in Kohl's holiday quarter and weak outlook, which the Wisconsin-based company reiterated Wednesday. During the quarter, Kohl's had its strongest sales performance in February.
May 10 (Reuters) - Vitamin Shoppe owner Franchise Group Inc (FRG.O) would be taken private by a group led by CEO Brian Kahn in a deal valued at about $2.6 billion, the company said on Wednesday. Shares of Franchise, which also owns retailer Buddy's Home Furnishings and discount furniture store American Freight, climbed about 3% premarket. The offer price represents an equity value of about $1.05 billion. The company in March disclosed it had received an unsolicited proposal for a buyout, but did not disclose any details about the buyer. Ham El-Waylly’s latest contribution to the soup pharmacopoeia is a colorful vegetable tortilla soup. In it, he uses tortilla chips two ways: pulverized to add body to the broth, and sprinkled on top for a satisfying crunch. He also adds caramelized red cabbage for an earthy sweetness, and plenty of lime juice for a bracing acidity. In the set-it-and-forget-it realm of soup recipes, Sarah DiGregorio has two new slow-cooker recipes. I suggest Vaughn Vreeland’s salted margarita bars, which have loads of energizing vitamin C from all that fresh lime juice, plus tequila and Grand Marnier to evoke the cocktail.
China approves safety of first gene-edited crop

BEIJING, May 4 (Reuters) - China has approved the safety of a gene-edited soybean, its first approval of the technology in a crop, as the country increasingly looks to science to boost food production. Shunfeng claims to be the first company in China seeking to commercialise gene-edited crops. Several additional steps are needed before China's farmers can plant the novel soybean, including approvals of seed varieties with the tweaked genes. Getting gene-edited crops onto the market is expected to be faster however, given fewer steps in the regulatory process. Aside from the United States, Japan has also approved gene-edited foods, including healthier tomatoes and faster-growing fish.

BOJ’s new governor has relaxed debut

What once looked solely like temporary “cost-push” hikes engendered by volatile energy and food prices are starting to look more entrenched. Instead Ueda kept YCC in place and tweaked the forward guidance to remove reference to pandemic-related risks. The BOJ predicts inflation will fall back below 2% soon and plans a policy review over the next year or so. That suggests the BOJ is more worried about weak growth – it expects 1.4% this fiscal year - than inflation. US economy rides a shopping cart to nowhere
  + stars: | 2023-04-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, April 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The American consumer held the U.S. economy afloat in the first quarter, driving an annualized GDP growth rate of 1.1% - less than expected though still enough to avoid recession. But the signs that shoppers are getting tired are already in plain sight. Consumption added 2.5 percentage points to GDP growth, which is close to levels seen in the past. Spending by American households counts for 70% of GDP – meaning shoppers effectively decide whether the U.S. economy is headed for recession or recovery.
