A strong sense of place can deeply influence a story, and in some cases, the setting can even feel like a character itself. This week’s literary geography quiz is all about Berlin, Germany’s capital city. The novels highlighted within the quiz were published in English within the past 85 years and told from the viewpoint of a visitor or expatriate experiencing the city. But even if you are unfamiliar with the specific titles, the questions are about Berlin’s landmarks — and the books form a handy reading list. Links to the books will be listed at the end of the quiz if you’d like to do further reading.

Hong Kong CNN —With Hong Kong’s sky-high cost of living, residents like Andy Tsui have been looking for alternative ways to have more fun and spend less. Rather than spending his cash in his hometown of Hong Kong, he’s been crossing the border into mainland China to splurge instead. Such trips are noteworthy because, for much of Hong Kong’s modern history, the traffic has been largely — conspicuously, even — in the other direction. Hong Kong used to be the place where Chinese would escape to, not from. In 2023, just 26 million mainlanders — about half of the 2018 crowd — visited Hong Kong.

Opinion | Putin Has Already Lost
  + stars: | 2024-02-22 | by ( Rajan Menon | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
As the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches, it has become a commonplace that time favors President Vladimir Putin. For Mr. Putin, more concerned by Ukraine than any other country that arose from the wreckage of the Soviet Union, that alone is tantamount to defeat. If the fundamental purpose of Mr. Putin’s war was to keep Ukraine within Russia’s orbit — politically, culturally and economically — it has had the opposite effect. Ukraine’s leaders and citizens, particularly those from younger generations, have decided that their future lies with the West, not Russia. Everywhere you go, Ukrainians speak Western languages, particularly English, in seemingly ever greater numbers.

Earth, metal and fireSectors under the earth element will also benefit from the dominant fire element, Maybank said, identifying sector winners as waste management, real estate, data warehousing and urban farming. "Despite rising interest rates and inflationary costs, the dominant Earth industries have shown resilience and continue to break new grounds," the Maybank report said. Most notably, in industries under the metal element — such as banking, engineering, mining and automotive — the wood element will be prominent and will bring prosperity to the metal industries.

Las Vegas hopes to hit the jackpot with the Super Bowl

CNN —When Super Bowl Sunday rolls around each year — whether it’s in Miami, New Orleans, Los Angeles or Minneapolis — Las Vegas still draws the crowds. It took years — and a Supreme Court ruling legalizing sports betting — for the National Football League to view Las Vegas in a different light. “We’re sold out, have been for the last month,” said Paul Hobson, general manager of the Sahara Las Vegas hotel-casino. “Las Vegas has a lot of people going there for Super Bowl weekend anyway,” Stephenson said. Additionally, the visitors it attracts spend a whole lot more than the ones who would show up on your typical Super Bowl weekend, Hill said.

In Las Vegas, the cacophony of voices, music, ringing slot machines and car horns that typically pulsed through the Las Vegas Strip was replaced by silence, the chirps of birds and the wails of sirens. In tourism-dependent Nevada, the unemployment rate rocketed even higher, topping out at 30.6% that month. “This is an unemployment rate that’s not driven by job losers, this is an unemployment rate driven by job seekers,” he said. Add in the potential attendance of the world’s most famous pop star, and there’ll be no blank spaces on the proverbial check Las Vegas could cash by the weekend’s end. “It helps the spectacle of the Super Bowl in general and I think that means that it benefits everyone,” he says. At least one analyst, however, quibbles with just how large the economic impact will be in reality. There is, however, concern “about displacing one type of visitor” for another because of how busy Las Vegas is many weekends already, Matheson says. “Do Super Bowl fans gamble at the blackjack table in the same way?” Matheson wonders, referring to the typical Las Vegas gambling visitor.
