SHENZHEN, China — Chinese vendor Yin Xinwei sometimes makes close to $1,400 a day selling low-priced pill boxes, barbecue spits and other items to U.S. online consumers. Each year hundreds of millions of packages, mostly from Chinese platforms, are sent directly to American consumers eager to take advantage of rock-bottom prices on clothing, electronics and other products. That could mean painful times ahead for the Chinese sellers that supply the platforms — and higher prices for American consumers. Chinese state media has criticized the proposal as protectionist and say it will hurt American consumers. Yin used to sell to Chinese consumers but has given up his domestic business to focus entirely on the overseas market.

Three EPA whistleblowers told ProPublica on Thursday that their complaints were the subject of the reports (which redact employee names). After endorsing Trump, Kennedy wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that the U.S. could “revisit pesticide and other chemical-use standards” if Trump wins. “The EPA was sort of paralyzed under the Trump administration,” she said. It’s not yet clear what Kennedy’s role might be in a potential Trump administration, or which decisions he’d help to make as part of the transition team. Even with Kennedy’s ties to Trump, Gartner said she would expect the EPA under a second Trump administration to act similarly to the first one.

Russia's military is advancing on the battlefield in Ukraine, but at home the Kremlin appears to have suffered a number of fiery setbacks that are captured in new satellite imagery: A failed test of a new missile, and a wave of Ukrainian strikes that set ablaze arms depots deep inside the country. “I think that we are closer to the peace than we think,” Ukrainian Zelenskyy said in an interview with ABC News that aired Monday. We just have to be very strong, very strong,” he said. The Ukrainian military said Saturday it had recorded fire and detonation at the Oktyabrsky depot. Effort to change Nebraska’s electoral vote system blockedA Republican state senator’s opposition to a law changing how Nebraska allocates its electoral votes drew anger from former President Donald Trump. State Sen. Mike McDonnell wrote in a letter that he is opposed to changing Nebraska’s system — which awards electoral votes by congressional district — to a winner-take-all approach so close to Election Day. Under a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska’s electoral votes.

LOS ANGELES — When Simone Biles won her first world championship in 2013, her agent at the time asked her a seminal question: What did she hope to accomplish in the sport of gymnastics? Olympic gold medals may have come up, but one of the wish list items Biles remembers most fondly was a long-held desire to have her own tour across the U.S.Like many of her goals, it has come to fruition in spectacular fashion. In the decade since she first pondered her aspirations in the sport, Biles has won 11 Olympic medals and 30 world championship medals, making her the most decorated gymnast in history. After her tour de force showing at the Paris Olympics this summer, she is making the rounds to 30 American cities to connect and celebrate with the fans who cheered her to greatness from home. It’s called the Gold Over America Tour, which can be abbreviated, appropriately, as “GOAT.”“It’s really about sharing that love and passion for the sport with the audience,” Biles said backstage before Friday’s Los Angeles show.

President Joe Biden will address the United Nations General Assembly for the final time as commander in chief Tuesday morning amid the spiraling conflict in the Middle East, Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and growing global concerns about China’s influence. They are also Biden’s first remarks before the General Assembly since Hamas’ attack on Israel in October and the conflict that has ensued in Gaza, killing thousands of civilians. He’ll speak to the leaders of other nations as hope for a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas has dimmed. As Israel continues its battle with Hamas, its conflict with Iran-backed Hezbollah has also escalated in recent days. Other key speakers expected at the General Assembly include Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy; Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas; and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A female cat has more freedom in Afghanistan than a woman does, Hollywood actor Meryl Streep said at the United Nations on Monday in a bid to get world leaders to focus on the plight of Afghan women and girls. “The way that ... this society has been upended is a cautionary tale for the rest of the world,” Streep told an event on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly to encourage the inclusion of women in the future of Afghanistan. The U.N. has sought a unified global approach to dealing with the Taliban, who have cracked down on women’s rights. Most girls have been barred from high school and women from universities by the Taliban. A squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan today, because the public parks have been closed to women and girls,” Streep said.

OTTAWA, Ontario — A Canadian man detained by China for more than 1,000 days said he was put into solitary confinement for months and interrogated for up to nine hours every day, treatment he said amounted to psychological torture. Kovrig and fellow Canadian Michael Spavor were taken into custody in December 2018 shortly after Canadian police detained Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, on a U.S. warrant. Kovrig noted that U.N. guidelines say prisoners should not be put into solitary confinement for more than 15 days in a row. Kovrig said there was no daylight in the solitary cell, where the fluorescent lights were kept on 24 hours a day. “It’s a combination of solitary confinement, total isolation and relentless interrogation for six to nine hours every day,” he said.

Missouri is set Tuesday to execute Marcellus Williams, a death row inmate whose case has spurred several efforts to save his life amid doubts about the evidence presented at his 2001 murder trial and the actions of a trial lawyer in the case. The attorneys are asking for the court to either find that those actions violated Williams’ rights or have a lower court address those issues. A St. Louis County circuit judge and Gayle’s family also agreed to the deal, but state Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, opposed it, and the state Supreme Court agreed. A judge ultimately rejected the motion to vacate, a ruling Williams’ attorneys appealed to the state Supreme Court in the hearing Monday. In addition to the state Supreme Court appeal, Williams’ attorneys also have an appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court and a clemency request before Missouri Gov.

MOSCOW — A court in Russia’s Kaliningrad region said it had sentenced a U.S. citizen to six years in jail and fined him for 100,000 roubles ($1,078) for kidnapping his son, after he tried to leave Russia with the child without permission from the boy’s mother. The court said that the U.S. citizen, Daniel Joseph Schneider, tried to leave Russia with his four-year-old son, who is a Russian citizen, on July 29, 2023. Schneider was detained near Poland by Russia’s border service while trying to cross the Russian border in a forest swamp, the court said. Russian state TV channel Vesti said that Schneider had tried to get permission from the child’s mother to take him abroad but that she refused. In August, Russia, the United States and several other countries carried out a major prisoner exchange, which involved 24 prisoners — 16 moving from Russia to the West and eight sent back to Russia from the West.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday proposed prohibiting key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles on American roads due to national security concerns, a move that would effectively bar Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market. The planned regulation, first reported by Reuters, would also force American and other major automakers in years ahead to remove key Chinese software and hardware from vehicles in the United States. President Joe Biden’s administration has raised concerns about data collection by connected Chinese vehicles on U.S. drivers and infrastructure and potential foreign manipulation of vehicles connected to the internet and navigation systems. The proposed prohibitions would prevent testing of self-driving cars on U.S. roads by Chinese automakers and extend to vehicle software and hardware produced by Russia and could be extended to other U.S. adversaries. The group said there is “very little” connected vehicle hardware or software “that enters the U.S. from China.

On Monday, Israel dramatically expanded its aerial assaults on Lebanon with airstrikes that killed nearly 500 people and wounded more than 1,600. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has warned of coming military strikes, but Israeli officials have not told U.S. officials whether or when a ground offensive could begin, the three defense officials said. The officials estimate a large offensive into southern Lebanon would take thousands more troops and armored vehicles, in addition to forces to hold any territory. In addition to tens of thousands of U.S. troops in the region, the Biden administration is considering options to send other military assets to the region. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah could dash already dwindling hopes for a cease-fire deal and hostage exchange with Hamas.

Prosecutors from Smith's office have said that such a filing is necessary because it would address the Supreme Court's concerns about presidential immunity issues in the case while limiting the number of possible appeals. They have asked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the election interference case, to allow them to file a 180-page brief on the issue by Thursday. Smith's office declined comment Monday night. If Chutkan allows prosecutors to file their motion, it's unclear how much of it would be made public. In a separate filing over the weekend, Smith's office said "the opening brief and its exhibits contain a substantial amount of Sensitive Material, as defined by the Protective Order" and would require redactions.

U.S. President Joe Biden addresses the 78th Session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, U.S., September 19, 2023. But given the geopolitical backdrop for Biden's speech, there will be little time for victory laps. Since Biden's last UNGA address in September 2023, ongoing wars in Ukraine and Sudan have persisted, while long-simmering tensions in the Middle East have erupted into deadly conflicts. Still, the Biden administration regularly emphasizes its commitment to a ceasefire and hostage deal. "This is one of the advantages of the UN General Assembly: You literally have the whole world here," said the administration official, who was granted anonymity to preview the president's agenda.
