A blind man is suing a railway company and two train operators after falling onto railway tracks in England. He said the lack of tactile paving at the train station meant he wasn't alerted to the platform edge. Charity the Royal National Institute of Blind People said last year that 40% of major rail stations in the UK lacked tactile paving. A jury found that the lack of tactile paving "more than minimally" contributed to his death, Metro reported.

Olympic games, titanic pricesFlavien Lallemand had barely made it on the Paris 2024 ticketing site, before deciding it wasn’t worth it. The Olympics, last hosted in Tokyo, Japan, is the world's largest sporting event and the French government claims the 2024 Games will be the most inclusive yet. It’s an embarrassing distraction for the games organizers, who have trumpeted the events accessibility credentials. “Paris 2024 will be the first Games to focus on solidarity and inclusivity,” boasts their official site. Bad air can be dangerous, especially if you’re breathing it over a lifetime. In East Asia, years of chronic air pollution is one reason that wearing face masks was common well before the coronavirus pandemic. School children there are used to playing inside on bad air days. In South Korea, would-be presidents have made reducing air pollution part of their campaign platforms. In other cases, urban air has improved because of something that no one saw coming.

In a rare victory for journalism amid a crackdown on the news media in Hong Kong, the city’s top court on Monday overturned the conviction of a prominent reporter who had produced a documentary that was critical of the police. Choy Yuk-ling, who also goes by the name Bao Choy, is best known in Hong Kong for producing investigative documentaries examining police conduct in 2019, when the city was roiled by months of antigovernment protests. Among the documentaries she produced was a prizewinning episode of “Hong Kong Connection,” a news program by the city’s public broadcaster RTHK. She was arrested in 2020 and found guilty the next year of making false statements to obtain car registry records. A court ordered her to pay a fine of 6,000 Hong Kong dollars, about $775.

Computer outage cripples train traffic in the Netherlands

AMSTERDAM, June 5 (Reuters) - A computer outage disrupted train travel to and from Amsterdam and in other parts of the Netherlands for hours on Sunday and Monday, Dutch railway company NS said. The outage hit traffic control around 6 p.m. local time (1600GMT) on Sunday afternoon and crippled train services until Monday morning. NS said on Monday it had resolved the problem and that trains would begin to operate slowly again from 0700 GMT. The outage made it impossible for domestic and international trains to reach Amsterdam Central Station and cut off all rail traffic to and from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, one of Europe's busiest hubs. It left hundreds of passengers stranded overnight in Amsterdam and at the country's largest train station in Utrecht, Dutch news agency ANP said.

HONG KONG, June 5 (Reuters) - Hong Kong journalist Bao Choy won an appeal at the city's top court on Monday against her conviction linked to checking vehicle registration records for a documentary about an attack at a train station on pro-democracy protesters in 2019. Bystanders and journalists were also beaten by the assailants during their attack on the protesters. Choy, whose documentary was focused on the police handling of the mob attack, had pleaded not guilty. Chan also argued that the prosecution failed to mention press freedom, which is protected under the city’s mini constitution. A Grand Roman Apartment Updated for the 21st Century

Maurizio Cascella loved his rental apartment in Rome so much that he stayed there for nearly 20 years. When he and his partner, Lorena Munoz, had their first daughter, Olivia, now 3, he approached his landlord about buying the place. After a long search, he found “a compromise that satisfied me,” he said — a 19th-century apartment near the Roma Termini train station that had plenty of character, with ornate plaster molding and parquet floors. We are witnessing the dawn of a new kind of urban area: the Playground City. The transformation toward the Playground City will not happen on its own. To draw people into the Playground City, we need to show, not tell. 6.Engage citizensGovernments should empower citizens to participate directly in making the Playground City. The Playground City sees people as both a means and an end, and it should involve them in the process of its creation.

Fil was one of dozens of Kherson residents who headed to the local bus station to catch minibuses out of the city where at least 23 civilians were killed on Wednesday in attacks that hit a train station, a hypermarket and residential buildings. Kherson residents have lived under almost constant Russian fire since Ukrainian forces forced Moscow's troops to retreat from the city in November after nearly eight months occupation. After first leaving in November, Fil went back to Kherson in early April from Odesa, where she was returning on Thursday. The Particular Magic of Chicken, Egg and Rice

Even just watching the glistening bowls of animated katsudon — fried pork loins, simmered in eggs — in animated episodes of “Yuri!!! But while every iteration of donburi is three kinds of magical, oyakodon is what I’ll always return to. Tiny epiphanies: the chicken’s suppleness, the egg’s slickness, the reassuring tug of rice on your teeth. Or my calibration of liquid to filling wasn’t quite hitting, overtaking the bowl of rice rather than collaborating with it. With every attempt, your preferences may change, and with every alteration you make, oyakodon becomes squarely, and decidedly, yours.

Many windows were smashed at the railway station, and at least two survivors were seen being carried out on stretchers. Regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin on Wednesday announced a curfew in Kherson city to last from Friday evening until Monday morning for "law enforcement" reasons.
The case for investing in India — a nation of 1.4 billion — is clear, and only bolstered by recent geopolitical shifts. As Western leaders look to boost economic cooperation with countries that share similar values, India, the world’s largest democracy, stands to gain. Arun Sankar/AFP/Getty ImagesIndia’s so-called “demographic dividend,” the potential economic growth arising from a large working-age population, represents a major opportunity. A recent Air India order for more than 200 Boeing planes could support more than 1 million American jobs. One consistent with our democratic values, and another not.”‘Economic miracle?’Beyond geopolitics, India’s economic and demographic fundamentals are driving business interest.
I didn't spot too many green features when I stayed, but one that did catch my eye was this switch by the door that let you turn all the lights off in one go when you were leaving the room, rather than turning them off individually. I thought this was a smart addition in case people forgot, for example, one of the bedside lamps. The room also had some motion-sensor lights, though these seemed a bit wasteful as sometimes they turned on when you didn't want them to. Grace Dean/Insider

Although not every child’s recording made the final cut, the project has aimed to broaden acceptance of children with autism and to give them a chance to have their voices broadcast at train stations, which many of them adore. Many children with autism focus intensely on the technical aspects of trains and buses, subway maps and train schedules, said Jonathan Trichter, a co-founder of the Foundry Learning Center — a school for children with developmental disabilities in Manhattan — and the driving force behind the public service announcements. Children with autism also latch onto phrases they hear in spaces where they are intensely focused and use them as some of their first means of communication, Mr. Trichter said. “As a result, it is not unusual for a child in New York City who is on the spectrum to have, as his or her first full sentence, something like ‘Stand clear of the closing doors, please,’” Mr. Trichter said, reciting the familiar warning that plays throughout the city’s subway system. That phenomenon, he said, gave him the idea to pitch the children’s announcements to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York, which was the first agency to broadcast them last April.
I lost my ID while traveling in Canada, which ruined my planned six-day, $2,500 trip to Churchill. I recently planned a trip to Churchill, Canada, — a tiny, frigid town that happens to be extremely remote and difficult to reach. But I had to cancel my trip when one of the worst things happened: I lost my ID somewhere on the streets of Vancouver, my first travel stop. If I'd lost either form of ID, I could have kept going with the other. I'm pretty sure showing Canadian customs a photo of my lost ID would have helped me get through the tense interview a little more smoothly, too.
