The downgrade comes after U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission slapped Coinbase with a Wells notice, saying it's identified possible violations of U.S. securities law . It also comes after the White House "strongly criticized" the digital asset sector this month . Coinbase shares surged nearly 118% in 2023, far outstripping the 3% gain in the S & P 500 over the same time period. Other analysts commented on Coinbase following the Wells notice. Mizuho Securities' Dan Dolev reiterated an underperform rating on Coinbase, saying the Wells notice is a "significant overhang" of the stock in his view.

The Securities and Exchange Commission issued crypto exchange Coinbase a Wells notice, warning the company that it identified potential violations of U.S. securities law. "Based on discussions with the Staff, the Company believes these potential enforcement actions would relate to aspects of the Company's spot market, staking service Coinbase Earn, Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Wallet," Coinbase said in a regulatory filing. A Wells notice is typically one of the final steps before the SEC formally issues charges. Coinbase described the investigation as "cursory," and said the Wells notice provided relatively little information about potential violations. The SEC sent a Wells notice to stablecoin issuer Paxos in February.

While non-Black families had a much higher starting point at roughly $950,000 just before the onset of the pandemic, their wealth has risen just 21% over the same period, the Wells study showed. Even with the improvement, the racial wealth gap is still staggering: Black Americans' net worth is 70% below that of non-Black households. "This is a step in the right direction, but there's still a lot of progress that needs to be made here." One factor contributing to the slight shrinking in the wealth gap is actually the fact that the assets of Black households are much less diversified.
