Accepting the reality that everyone dies eventually is an important step toward appreciating the life you have left to live. Arthur's advice: Stand in front of a mirror, look into your eyes and repeat to yourself, "I'm going to die." But the mindset shift can have many beneficial effects: Embracing mortality leads people to be more compassionate, mindful and driven to achieve their goals in life, Santos said. Arthur has spoken to hundreds of individuals about their final stages of life. "Grounding in my mortality means that at some point I won't have access to all these senses anymore," Arthur said.

The prosecutor-versus-felon approach may appeal to undecided voters who had been sour on both Mr. Trump and President Biden. Mr. Trump, for his part, has been trying to soften some of his harshest rhetoric about seeking vengeance on his rivals ahead of the general election. In the case of Ms. Harris, the contempt is displayed both in public and private. Since then, Mr. Trump has attacked her savagely, particularly when she became Mr. Biden’s running mate in 2020. On Sunday, Mr. Trump, who has insisted he would debate Mr. Biden anytime and anywhere, appeared to try to change the terms of the second debate.

A kids' bank account is a type of joint bank account where an adult and a minor both have access. Types of bank accounts for minorsThere are two primary joint bank account options: kids' savings accounts and teens' checking accounts. Depending on where you bank, you may need to open a traditional savings account or a specialized bank account tailored to children. A custodial bank account is not the same as a traditional kids' bank account. Some national banks permit online applications when opening a bank account on behalf of a minor, but many require opening a minor's first bank account at a physical branch.

It wasn’t that long ago that many Republicans fully supported the most compelling of Biden’s ideas: term limits for justices. Term limits were also supported by Senator Marco Rubio, and Senator Ted Cruz proposed putting justices up for election every eight years. But an 18-year maximum tenure for justices, as Biden and many others have proposed, shouldn’t be ping-ponged around by whatever faction is dissatisfied with the current court. Through the 1960s, the average term on the court was around 15 years; after 1970, it became about 26 years. The founders did not fully anticipate how a justice might become insulated from reality after serving on the court for many decades.

Take activist hedge funds, which buy up a percentage of a company's stock (or an asset) and then use their weight to push for operational changes. Or there would be a fun, splashy war between the hedge fund and the C-suite. Hedge funds rely on outperforming the market when times are hard and it's easier to find pockets of outperformance and exploit them. Of course, hedge funds are having a hard time coming up with a crew because the clients have changed too. Activist Commentary: Starboard is a very successful activist investor and has extensive experience helping companies focus on operational efficiency and margin improvement. On July 15, Starboard sent a letter to Match highlighting various opportunities to improve operations, financial results and capital allocation. Match's EBITDA margin of 36% may be high for an average company, but it's low for a company like Match. Starboard thinks that this is a highly valuable asset that may be well-suited to operate as a private company. Starboard is not the first activist to launch a public campaign at Match.

The Voting Machine Conspiracy Theorists Are Still at It
  + stars: | 2024-07-20 | by ( Alan Feuer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Nearly four years later, zealous supporters of former President Donald J. Trump who promoted the conspiracy theory that Dominion Voting Systems had rigged its machines to rob him of the 2020 election are still at it. Even though Dominion has aggressively defended itself in court, a network of pro-Trump activists has continued to push false claims against the company, often by seeking to use information gleaned from the very defamation lawsuits the firm has filed against them. The network includes wealthy business executives like Patrick Byrne, who once ran Overstock.com, and Mike Lindell, the founder of the bedding company MyPillow. Both have sought without credible evidence to put Dominion at the heart of a vast conspiracy to deny Mr. Trump a victory. It also includes a pro-Trump sheriff from southwest Michigan, a former election official from Colorado and Mr. Byrne’s own lawyer, who is facing charges of tampering with Dominion machines and who once worked alongside Mr. Trump’s legal team in claiming that the company was part of a plot to subvert the last election.

Vitable Health aims to make healthcare more affordable for hourly employees at small businesses. Joseph Kitonga, the founder and CEO of Vitable Health, saw this problem firsthand through his parents' small business, where only 10% of employees opted for health insurance. The average health insurance premium of $500 per individual and over $1,000 per family is simply too costly for blue-collar hourly employees, said Kitonga. This realization led to the creation of Vitable Health, an affordable digital health plan for small businesses. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers.

Bernice Johnson Reagon, whose stirring gospel voice helped provide the soundtrack of the civil rights movement, then went on to become a cultural historian, a curator at the Smithsonian Institution and the founder of the women’s a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, died on Tuesday in Washington. Her death, in a hospital, was confirmed by her daughter, Toshi Reagon, who did not give a cause. She was an original member in 1962 of the Freedom Singers, a vocal quartet that provided anthems of defiance for civil rights protesters preparing to confront the police or as they were hauled away to jail. The Freedom Singers were associated with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which sent them across the South as well as to the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island in 1963. Ms. Reagon once wrote, “I sang and heard the freedom songs and saw them pull together sections of the Black community at times when other means of communication were ineffective.”

The past few years have solidified single-family rental homes as genuine moneymaking enterprises, not just ho-hum nest eggs. Related storiesWhen everyone was scrambling for their piece of the suburbs during the pandemic, mom-and-pop landlords pounced, using these newfound tools to collect more cash. The company, which estimates only one-fourth of single-family-rental landlords use professional management services, now manages more than 28,000 rentals on behalf of small landlords. As the Wall Street ethos trickles down to small rental owners, it'll be harder and harder to tell them apart. But the gap is narrowing as small rental owners capitalize on the innovations that the institutional class has already embraced.
