The National Weather Service declared an overnight flash flood emergency for Roswell and nearby areas, as emergency management within Chaves County reported numerous water rescues. “We feel for the New Mexicans affected by this latest flooding in our state,” said Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the New Mexico National Guard’s Adjutant General. “Because of the previous flooding in Ruidoso, we have the experience and were ready for this.

It isn't an accident that people who want to cancel a subscription often have to navigate a web of bureaucracy and confusion. "Actual affirmative consent from a consumer," Witte said, would establish trust between the consumer and the company, boosting loyalty. Along with litigation from the CFPB, state attorneys general have pursued legal action against big companies over hard-to-cancel subscriptions. Last year, Letitia James, New York's attorney general, sued SiriusXM over claims that the radio company trapped customers in subscriptions and maintained a complicated and burdensome cancellation process. AdvertisementIndustries have mastered techniques to maximize their profits by crafting their business models in confusing ways that can lure customers into a subscription without realizing it.

He said a Harris administration "will build on existing programs, increasing federal spending to make health care more affordable for people." Still, Socal said a Trump administration wouldn't have much flexibility to dismantle or scale back the law without change from Congress. The IRA extended enhanced subsidies that made ACA health plans more affordable for millions of households through 2025 — a provision Harris plans to make permanent if elected, her campaign said. A Democratic House or Senate would likely block any of Trump's sweeping changes to Medicaid, according to Altman. Experts noted then, as they note today, that high costs and complex logistics make mass deportation more complicated than campaign promises suggest. Immigrants deported from the United States arrive in Guatemala City on an ICE deportation flight on February 9, 2017. John Moore/Getty ImagesSo what would deporting the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States cost? The organization also argues that mass deportation would make more jobs available for Americans. The economic impact of mass deportation, he says, would amount to “utter disaster.”“We Americans, we, the country, we, in our communities, would be significantly damaged,” he says.

Robert Roberson, the condemned man whose execution was halted late Thursday because of an unprecedented legal gambit by Texas lawmakers, is expected to appear in person Monday at a legislative hearing in Austin, his legal representatives said. The subpoena was issued to help buy more time for Roberson, who has bipartisan support. The Office of the Attorney General quickly appealed the district court judge’s temporary injunction to the state’s highest criminal court, which agreed with allowing Roberson’s execution to continue. But lawmakers then petitioned their case to the Texas Supreme Court late Thursday as the hours ticked down before midnight — when Roberson’s death warrant was set to expire. State Rep. Brian Harrison, a Republican who helped to introduce the motion to subpoena Roberson, acknowledged Friday that although the execution was blocked, various issues remain at play.

Tesla faces a new investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, concerning issues with its “Full Self-Driving” systems, and whether they are safe to use in fog, glaring sun or other “reduced roadway visibility conditions.”The probe follows an incident in which a Tesla driver who had been using FSD struck and killed a pedestrian, and other FSD-involved collisions during reduced roadway visibility conditions. FSD, which the company now refers to as a “partial driving automation system,” is Tesla’s paid, premium driver assistance option. But Tesla has offered it to all drivers for a monthlong free trial in the U.S., previously. The U.S. federal vehicle safety regulator tracks collisions involving the use of automakers’ advanced driver assistance systems, like Tesla’s Autopilot or FSD. As of Oct. 1, 2024, the NHTSA had tracked 1,399 incidents in which Tesla’s driver assistance systems were engaged within 30 seconds of the collision, and 31 of those had resulted in fatalities.

Seven years ago, the bodies of two teenage girls were discovered near a hiking trail outside the small Indiana town of Delphi. Allen worked at a CVS in Delphi and had processed photos for Libby’s family without charging them, her grandparents have said. Investigators found the images on Libby’s cellphone and released them days after the girls' bodies were discovered in a bid to identify a possible suspect. Allen, who was interviewed by authorities in 2017 and admitted being at the trail the day the teens vanished, was arrested in 2022. In a request for a search warrant in 2017, an FBI agent said the girls' bodies appeared to have been moved and staged.

New York CNN —The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has launched an investigation into the safety of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature, or FSD, after at least one fatal accident involving a pedestrian. The investigation is looking into four accidents involving vehicles using the FSD feature. FSD is at the center of Tesla’s plans for future growth and profitability. This is not the first time that the NHTSA has announced it is investigating Tesla’s self-driving features. In February 2023 the agency ordered a recall to change the FSD software on all of the more than 360,000 Teslas then on US roads with the feature.

A Tesla Model 3 vehicle warns the driver to keep their hands on the wheel and be prepared to take over at anytime while driving using FSD (Full Self-Driving) in Encinitas, California, U.S., October 18, 2023. Tesla faces a new investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, concerning issues with its "Full Self-Driving" systems, and whether they are safe to use in fog, glaring sun or other "reduced roadway visibility conditions." The probe follows an incident in which a Tesla driver who had been using FSD, struck and killed a pedestrian, and other FSD-involved collisions during reduced roadway visibility conditions. Records posted to the NHTSA website on Friday morning said the purpose of the new probe would be to assess:"The ability of FSD's engineering controls to detect and respond appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions; whether any other similar FSD crashes have occurred in reduced roadway visibility conditions and, if so, the contributing circumstances for those crashes," among other things. The agency will also look into Tesla's over-the-air, software updates to its FSD systems, which are now marketed as "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)," to understand the "timing, purpose, and capabilities of any such updates, as well as Tesla's assessment of their safety impact."

An independent, bipartisan review identified “numerous mistakes” by the U.S. Secret Service and “specific failures and breakdowns” that enabled the assassination attempt that injured former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. “The Secret Service as an agency requires fundamental reform to carry out its mission," the members added. "Without that reform, the Independent Review Panel believes another Butler can and will happen again.”The Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the review. “The increasing demand placed on the agency during this dynamic threat environment has resulted in our people being pushed to the limit,” said Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service. The group said it identified “deep flaws in the Secret Service, including some that appear to be systemic or cultural,” including a “lack of critical thinking among Secret Service personnel” and agents’ unwillingness to “speak up” regarding potential threats.

Last month, a state-run health care agency launched a website that shares information that proponents of the ballot measure say is misleading. The DeSantis administration has also ramped up efforts to investigate allegations of fraud in the signature-gathering process by the groups behind the measure. In addition, the state Health Department sent cease-and-desist letters this month to multiple television stations across the state that had aired an ad that supported the ballot measure. Spokespersons for the DeSantis administration, the Health Department and the Agency for Health Care Administration didn’t respond to questions. Even putting the efforts from DeSantis and other Florida Republicans aside, the ballot measure faces an uphill climb.

With that increase, the maximum Social Security benefit for a worker retiring at full retirement age will jump to $4,018 per month, up from $3,822 per month this year, according to the Social Security Administration. Who gets maximum Social Security benefits? Since Social Security retirement benefits are calculated based on the highest 35 years of earnings, workers need to consistently have wages up to that threshold to earn the maximum retirement benefit. If a wealthy person has other sources of income, for example from investments that do not require payroll tax contributions, that will not affect the size of their Social Security benefits, said Jim Blair, vice president of Premier Social Security Consulting and a former Social Security administrator.
