CNN —For Hollywood, 2023 will be remembered as a cruel summer, a dead reckoning of a different kind. The summer’s ostentatious setbacks for studios have included “The Flash” (released by Warner Bros., like CNN, a unit of Warner Bros. The asterisk – and it’s a big one – is that the guilds know precious little about the economic specifics of the streaming business, which aren’t widely shared. Actors and writers who once counted on residual payments could see TV ratings and box-office tallies. Because projects are produced far in advance, consumers won’t see the broader consequences of these strikes for a while.

New York CNN —Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called on the US Food and Drug Administration to investigate the high caffeine content of PRIME Energy drinks, which he claims are being targeted to children as “one of the summer’s hottest beverages for kids.”Schumer said cans of PRIME Energy drinks contain more than double the caffeine of a can of Red Bull and six times more caffeine than a can of Coca-Cola. The company does not recommend the drinks for anyone under the age of 18, according to information on its website. “What this drink is giving you is a caffeine rush, it is a high, followed by a crash,” Dr. Bracho-Sanchez said. On the company’s website, a fact page states, “PRIME Energy contains 200mg of caffeine, per 12 oz. The FDA says 400 milligrams of caffeine a day for healthy adults is “not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects.”CNN has reached out to the FDA for comment.

For those who remember the 2019 Shakespeare in the Park production of “Much Ado About Nothing” — as I do, fondly — the sight that awaits them at this summer’s “Hamlet” in the same location is disturbing. The flagpole bearing the Stars and Stripes sticks out of the ground at a precipitous angle, like a javelin that made a bad landing. For the director Kenny Leon and the scenic designer Beowulf Boritt, both returning for this “Hamlet” — the Public Theater’s fifth in the park since 1964 and 13th overall — it’s a coup de théâtre, if an odd one. An approach that had been designed to welcome audiences to a new way of looking at Shakespeare in 2019 now seems destined to exclude them. But this “Hamlet” has been placed in a frame that doesn’t match what the production actually delivers, leaving me glad to have seen it but wishing for something more congruent.

The next day, Mr. Stanley wrote an email in which he detailed his concerns to Stockton Rush, the chief executive of OceanGate Expeditions, who was also on board the Titan for the dive, urging Mr. Rush to cancel the expeditions to the wreck of the Titanic that were planned for that summer. Would you consider taking dozens of other people to the Titanic before you truly knew the source of those sounds? Rush was piloting the Titan and was among the five people on board who were killed. The Titan’s final voyage would have been its 14th expedition to the Titanic’s wreckage.

New York CNN —Bud Light is trying to revive its slumping brand with a new marketing campaign aimed at – appropriately – overcoming adversity. It shows people enjoying Bud Light despite facing some of summer’s biggest pain points, like sunburn or a sudden thunderstorm during a cook out. That spot featured actor Miles Teller and his wife Keleigh Sperry dancing and relaxing at home with a Bud Light. The United States’ résumé is top of its class: The team will head to this summer’s tournament in Australia and New Zealand as the No. 1-ranked women’s soccer team in the world and the two-time defending champion. Driven by a decline in energy prices and food prices, this inflation measure has now decelerated for 11 consecutive months. Potential relief for consumersThe PPI is a closely watched inflation gauge, since it captures average price shifts upstream of the consumer. Stripping out the more volatile categories of energy and food, the core PPI index showed that prices increased 0.2% from April and moderated to 2.8% on an annual basis. The May PPI report is the second piece of good inflation news in a two-day span: On Tuesday, the Consumer Price Index showed that inflation eased to 4% on an annual basis in May. “We can’t keep getting inflation data like this and maintain inflation is out of control,” he wrote.

Tuesday’s inflation report, which covers May, will offer the latest evidence on how well the fight against inflation is working. The annual inflation rate probably cooled last month, easing to 4.1 percent from 4.9 percent in April, according to economists surveyed by Bloomberg. That would leave the inflation rate at less than half of last summer’s 9 percent peak. Monthly core inflation is expected to remain at 0.4 percent, a pace that economists at JPMorgan called “uncomfortably high” in a note previewing the release. inflation figures — set for release on June 30 — and offer a more timely snapshot of inflation trends, which is what makes the report so important.

Barbiecore “ignites my soul,” makeup artist Victoria Lyn recently told her 5.3 million TikTok followers from her Pensacola, Fla., studio. For the uninitiated, Barbiecore is a pink-drenched fashion craze that pranced into the zeitgeist last year after hot-pink collections from Valentino and Versace appeared on celebrities and on-set images from Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” film (out July 21) emerged online. Lyn claimed the trend “is here to slay for the summer.” Considering #Barbiecore currently has over 350 million views on TikTok, her prediction might well come to pass.

In recent weeks, right-wing media has smeared and incited boycotts against Bud Light and Target, two jumbo American brands that have been thrust into the center of the toxic culture wars. Both companies have been relentlessly attacked over their show of public support for the LGBTQ community. But it is precisely what some of the loudest and most influential right-wing media figures are promoting to their large followings, with new self-generated outrage cycles generated daily. In fact, with Pride Month about to get underway, and more brands showing their support for the LGBTQ community, expect more fronts to open up. As the right-wing media personalities leading this campaign have said: Bud Light and Target were just the beginning.

Gas is almost $1 cheaper than a year ago

But gas prices are miles away from last summer’s nightmare. At this point last year, gas prices were racing toward $5 a gallon, angering Americans, alarming central bankers and threatening the entire economy. Gas is not cheapTo be sure, gas prices are not nearly as cheap as back in 2020 when the national average crashed below $2 a gallon. Looking ahead, gas prices will probably remain far away from last summer’s peak. “If we return to economic prosperity, we’re going to return to the same gas price explosion as last year.”

CNN —Four years ago, on a warm Spanish summer’s evening in Madrid, Tottenham Hostpur was just 90 minutes away from reaching the pinnacle of European football. Tottenham players offered to reimburse their fans after the Newcastle defeat. “Unfortunately, the mismanagement of Tottenham off the pitch has now transcended to on the pitch to a point where Tottenham are in the biggest mess I’ve known in my lifetime.”Bleak future?
“I hope the Republican Party can muster the courage to oppose late-term abortion like we have done in the past. But after the midterms produced a slimmer-than-expected majority, there now appears to be little appetite inside the House GOP for such a bill. Troy Nehls, a Republican from Texas, told CNN: “it’s up to the states,” when asked about a national ban. The National Right to Life Committee said it is in regular communication with House Republican leadership about possible legislative efforts and educational needs on the issue. “What we’re working on right now is primarily reacquainting members with the abortion issue after the Dobbs decision.
For some U.S. travelers, this summer’s hottest European destination is one without other Americans. American tourists mobbed Europe last year, and 2023 is looking even busier, travel advisers say. Reservations for European trips rose 8% over last summer, according to data from Hopper, a travel app. Delta Air Lines President Glen Hauenstein said last week that 75% of seats on the carrier’s international flights this summer are already booked, even with added flights and seats.
Washington CNN —The recent revelations of lavish gifts and travel that a Republican megadonor showered on Justice Clarence Thomas reflect a larger Supreme Court culture of nondisclosure, little explanation, and no comment. The incident reflects the broader lack of accountability at the high court regarding off-bench behavior. Justices regularly brush aside reporters’ queries for specifics on travel and gifts, book advances and other extracurricular activities. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin made another such plea to Roberts this week as he also urged the chief justice to open an investigation into Thomas’ conduct. Chief justice on the spotRoberts, who became chief justice in 2005, has continually described the high court as beyond the realm of politics and worthy of public trust.

The film was adapted from Samuel Hunter's 2012 play of the same name. The role marked his return to the big screen as a leading man after a nine-year absence from major roles. The film drew criticism from some reviewers who said its depiction of Charlie relied on tropes of depressed, obese people. Some spoke out against its use of prosthetics rather than casting an obese actor.
