When I was around 10 years old, my father started hiding bananas in our house. We found them in the dishwasher, in the junk drawer, behind the potted plants. I once came upon an entire bunch hanging from the shower head. A wood sculptor, he had always been obsessive, almost rabid, about his work. But now it was as if someone had yanked out his batteries.

Opinion | J.D. Vance’s Strange Turn to 1876

This, in fact, was the argument made by Senator J.D. You would’ve actually tried to go to the states that had problems; you would try to marshal alternative slates of electors, like they did in the election of 1876. And then you have to actually prosecute that case; you have to make an argument to the American people.”Let’s look at what happened in 1876. Samuel Tilden of New York, won a majority of the national popular vote but fell one vote short of a majority in the Electoral College. In the three Southern states, where the elections were marred by fraud, violence and anti-Black intimidation, officials from both parties certified rival slates of electors.

Constantly searching for new coffee shops has taught me how to better trust my instincts. AdvertisementMany independent coffee shops closed during or shortly after the height of the pandemic. Plus, at local coffee shops, I'm one of few customers instead of one of many in a long line. Sometimes, I still end up at coffee chains — but my self-imposed ban means I'll opt for smaller ones like Blank Street or Gregory's Coffee instead of mega-global franchises. It's just that by quitting, my coffee world has opened up beyond the limitations of one company — and forever hunting for a new coffee shop has become my ultimate pick-me-up.

Strange things appear in the forests and chaparral of California after a big rain. Invigorated by the damp, fungi living quietly in the soil sprout fruiting bodies. With each emergence comes a chance for mushroom hunters to identify new species. As many as 95 percent of the planet’s fungal species have yet to be described, according to a 2023 report from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. With sequencing, fungus enthusiasts often identify fungi that are the first examples of their kind in the databases.

Customers would get a call from the bank, or their A.T.M. cards would stop working and then their credit cards would freeze as well. One question that lingered was what the long-term ramifications would be for those whose accounts were closed. CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Western countries they’re taking a “very serious and dangerous step” by supplying weapons to Ukraine, which could result in Moscow arming their enemies. Ukraine has relied heavily on arms supplied by Western allies to beat back Russian forces since Putin’s full-scale invasion began more than two years ago. The appearance of German tanks in Ukraine had resulted in an “ethical shock” in Russia, where the attitude toward Germany had previously been “very good,” Putin said.
