Popham’s wife, Mel, would have a conversation with her husband and an hour later he would have “no recollection,” he tells CNN Sport. Richard Boardman, the lawyer representing the claimants, told CNN Sport that this is causing an “existential threat” to the game. “As far as the brain is concerned, it doesn’t matter what sport is played,” Michael Grey, a neuroscientist at the University of East Anglia, told CNN Sport. Nowinski, a WWE wrestler turned neuroscientist, told CNN Sport that head injury protocols need to go beyond treating concussion. The paper, which looked at 412 Scottish former international male rugby players aged 30 and above and 1,236 members of the public who had been matched for age, sex and socioeconomic status, found that the rugby players’ risk of a dementia diagnosis over time was just over twice as high.

London CNN —Allowing children to play impact sports, such as rugby or boxing, amounts to a form of child abuse, researchers from three British universities said in a new study. “The child’s brain doesn’t know or care how it was traumatized,” study lead author Eric Anderson, Professor of Sport at the University of Winchester, told CNN. And so we need to stop parents from hitting children in the head as punishment. The study argues that children cannot consent to taking part in highly dangerous activities such as impact sports, nor can adults give informed consent on their behalf. “If we were to invent sports from the get-go today, we wouldn’t be inventing sports that had children hitting their brains,” Anderson said.

CNN —Since the early 2000s, a coin has lay buried next to a tree at Augusta National Golf Club, nestled there as a good luck charm by the mother of a promising young French golfer. Not since Arnaud Massy became the first non-Briton to win the Open Championship in 1907 has a Frenchman lifted silverware at a recognized Tour event. The world’s 890th ranked amateur when he turned professional in 2013, Pavon spent two years on the Alps Tour before graduating to the Challenge Tour, finally securing his card on the DP World Tour (European Tour) in 2017. “I don’t come from a normal background because I wasn’t a great player once,” Pavon told CNN Sport’s Don Riddell. CNN —Rumors and speculation are swirling as multiple UK outlets and racing publications are reporting that seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton is poised to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari for the 2025 season. Nothing has been formally announced, and none of the parties will confirm a deal is in place. CNN has reached out to Mercedes and Ferrari, who both declined to comment. CNN has also reached out to representation for Hamilton. However, in a shock move first reported by Sky Sports and Spanish media, Hamilton is now expected to leave Mercedes a year early to join Charles Leclerc at Ferrari for 2025, replacing Carlos Sainz.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Underneath his umbrella, NFL legend Dan Marino stood nearly drenched on the sideline watching Prince’s epic “Purple Rain” Super Bowl halftime performance in 2007 during a torrential Miami downpour. “The halftime performance has come a long way,” said the Hall of Fame quarterback who played 17 seasons with the Miami Dolphins and competed in the 1985 Super Bowl. His show will be vastly different than the NFL’s first Super Bowl halftime show in 1967, which featured marching bands from the University of Arizona and Grambling State University, a historically Black college, along with hundreds of flying pigeons, thousands of balloons and two soaring men wearing jetpacks. After the inaugural Super Bowl, the NFL kept bringing back other marching bands, drill teams, signed Chubby Checker and Up with People, an organization that stage positive thinking through dance and song performances. Dudowsky recalled when Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said the “Super Bowl of music is the Super Bowl.” He said the halftime show has been able to grow thanks to the NFL's ability to adjust to the current culture and giving deserving artists the platform to express their artistry.

CNN —The United States Figure Skating team will receive a gold medal for their team event at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, after Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva was handed a four-year ban Monday over a long-running doping controversy. Valieva, now 17, had led the Russian Olympic Committee to first place in the team event ahead of the US and Japan — before her doping test came back positive for performance-enhancing substance trimetazidine. CNN Sport has contacted the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Japanese Olympic Committee and the Russian Olympic Committee for further comment. Even with the latest news of Valieva’s ban, Alexander Kogan, director general of the Russian Figure Skating Federation, said that he still views his athletes to be the champions in the team event. In its Monday announcement, CAS said that the decision to ban Valieva for four years is “final and binding,” explaining that the parties can appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal “within 30 days on limited grounds.”

The historic sporting moment for Palestinians comes as Israel’s war against Hamas rages in Gaza, causing widespread destruction and initiating a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. The Palestinian Football Association says that, as of December 6, 55 football players are amongst the dead, including amateur and youth members. Some Palestinian national team footballers, like Saleh, have reportedly lost family members or have relatives and friends trapped in Gaza. There is a shelf at Carissa Moore’s home in Honolulu where she keeps her journals. This year, knowing that she was going to retire from competition, she wrote a new goal: Face your fears. She is a five-time world champion and current defender of an Olympic gold medal. Now she wants to start a family with her husband, Luke Untermann. She wants to be challenged in a different way, even though the easiest thing might be to stick around.

For most of its more than 150 years of existence, college football has been defined as much by controversy and contention as what happened when a bunch of students squared off on the field. This is a sport where 34 national titles have been disputed or vacated—and sometimes both. Then, 10 years ago, the sport’s leaders decided to change all that. College football went from the murky selection process of the Bowl Championship Series era to a playoff format, allowing four teams to duke it out for the national title. The days of controversy were supposedly over.

CNN —Soccer is set to trial sin bins at the higher levels of the game in a bid to improve player behavior towards match officials – a move that has drawn a mixed response. The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the sport’s lawmaking body, announced on Monday that sin bins should be trialed “for dissent and specific tactical offences” having been successfully implemented at a grassroots level. Richard Heathcote/Getty ImagesBut not everyone is in favor of sin bins. “Considering football can’t decide what is clear and obvious from one week to the next, sin bins and the threshold for being banished to one have no chance,” CNN Senior Sports Analyst Darren Lewis wrote on X. He continued: “The success of sin bins in the grassroots game has been prevention, rather than cure.

Over the last generation of NBA basketball, players have reimagined nearly every method of scoring points. Top dunkers have evolved from lumbering behemoths to athletes who can sprint the length of the floor in a few strides. The exception is the free throw, stuck more or less where it’s always been. Even the league’s worst shooters, with rare exceptions, settle for the norm after they draw a foul. They tinker instead of overhauling, trying for higher arc and a more consistent release, logging the same lousy numbers.

It meant many of the sport’s top players opted not to play the latter – an end-of-year tournament dubbed the World Cup of tennis. Aryna Sabalenka waits during a rain delay at this year's WTA Finals. Clive Brunskill/Getty ImagesSimon responded with a letter of his own during the WTA Finals, outlining to players how the organisation was handling the issues raised. But there looks to be no magic solution to the array of problems facing women’s tennis at the moment. “But I think about men’s and women’s tennis, I don’t just think about women’s tennis.

On July 26, 2020, Villegas and wife Maria’s 22-month-old daughter Mia died following a four-month battle with tumors on the brain and spine. “She was a very little kid, full of energy, and everything seemed to be going in the perfect direction,” Villegas told CNN Sport’s Patrick Snell. Rob Carr/Getty ImagesFront row seatSlowly, but surely, momentum began to change for Villegas, “a little snowball” gathering speed and size. Mia’s Miracles was flourishing under Maria’s presidency, Villegas was back competing at PGA Tour events and then, in December 2021, the greatest boost yet. No surprises as to which foundation Villegas directed the donation towards.
