CNN —The phases of Venus, the Aurora Australis and the International Space Station transiting the Sun all feature as category winners in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. Ryan Imperio was named the overall winner for his photograph capturing the progression of Baily’s beads during the 2023 annular eclipse, according to a Thursday statement from the Royal Observatory Greenwich, which runs the competition. “These are a challenge to capture due to their brevity and the precise timing needed.”Imperio said that he didn’t expect to win the competition. “The images selected each year are absolutely astonishing and I am both thrilled and honoured to have my photo among them,” he said in the statement. Grotte Mandrin is the only known site to have been home to alternating groups of both Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis. “The Thorin population spent 50,000 years without exchanging genes with other Neanderthal populations,” Slimak said in a news release. DNA from Homo sapiens fossils from that time show that these early arrivals interbred with Neanderthals — traces of those encounters remain in present-day human populations. Archaeologists have excavated more of Thorin’s remains: 31 teeth, part of the jaw and five finger bones, so far. It’s the only known site to have been home to alternating groups of both Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, plus the earliest evidence of bow and arrow use outside Africa.

The El Niño of 252 million years ago would have originated in the Panthalassic Ocean, a body of water much larger than today’s Pacific that could hold more heat, which in turn would have strengthened and sustained El Niño effects. The planet had experienced similar episodes earlier but they hadn’t triggered a mass extinction. A prolonged and intense El Niño also explained why extinctions had begun on land before they occurred in the ocean, the study said. This data showed how temperature rose at different latitudes as the mass extinction unfolded. El Niño events today are known to cause coral bleaching and mass mortality of fish, the study noted, but the ecological impact and future trajectory of El Niño events in a warming climate are unknown.

Here’s what we know – and don’t – about China’s space plane. The term “space plane” often evokes NASA’s Space Shuttle, which flew 135 missions from 1981 to 2011, carrying astronauts into orbit and helping to construct the International Space Station. Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesWhat do we know about China’s space plane program? China’s space plane development comes as a growing number of countries are paying attention to the deepening connections between security on Earth and in space – and vying for so-called counterspace technologies with the potential to disrupt or even destroy adversaries’ assets in space. But observers have also raised questions about the activities of the space plane, including its own deployment of multiple small satellites.

The new model can work through complex tasks and, in comparison to previous models, solve more difficult problems in science, coding, and math. Over the summer, while o1 was still in development, the company unveiled a new five-level classification system for tracking its progress toward that goal. The DOJ did not name Tenet Media but NBC News identified the company based on its description in the indictment. Unlike the influencers alleged to have been victims of RT and Tenet Media, who denied knowing they were working for Russia, Chen has said nothing since the indictment made news. “By connecting to and interacting with one another through YouTube videos, influencers with mainstream audiences lend their credibility to openly white nationalist and other extremist content creators,” Lewis wrote. Following the unsealing of the indictment, TheBlaze fired Chen and Turning Point USA removed her author page from its website. YouTube terminated all four of Chen’s pages, erasing thousands of videos and nearly a decade of work, including the channel for Tenet Media.

When Bill Gates dropped out of college to co-found Microsoft, he wasn't thinking about becoming a billionaire or running a company that's now valued at more than $3 trillion. At the time, in 1976, computer obsessives like Gates and co-founder Paul Allen were considered "hobbyists" — yet they fervently believed that a technological revolution was imminent. And I was willing to focus my life, in my 20s, just on software, just on the one job," says Gates. Specifically, that job was creating high-quality software that could make the general public actually embrace the personal computer. That intense focus on creating the best product possible didn't mean Gates wasn't aware that there was also money to be made — in fact, he insisted upon it from the beginning.

CNN —Astronomers have observed the detailed motions of giant gas bubbles on the surface of a nearby star for the first time, which rise and fall like the inside of a lava lamp. The images show the surface of the star R. Doradus, a red giant star 180 light-years away in the Dorado constellation. The telescope enabled them to collect high-resolution images of the star’s surface over the course of a month. Convection bubbles can be seen moving on the surface of R. Doradus, as seen by the ALMA telescope in Chile. While convection bubbles have been spotted before on the surface of stars, the new observations tracked the motion of bubbles in a way that wasn’t possible earlier.

Last month, the American Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage after its national supply fell by more than 25% in July. Shortages can be dire for patients since doctors have to make tough decisions about who needs blood transfusions the most. McConnell is CEO of a four-year-old startup called Safi Biotherapeutics, which is working to manufacture inexpensive red blood cells at scale. Scientists have already discovered how to grow red blood cells from stem cells, but it's a costly and complex process that typically yields small amounts at a time. Safi's goal is to build on these advancements and produce large quantities of blood that could eventually be used commercially to help care for patients and avoid blood shortages.

But more than half the global population isn’t eating enough of these and five other nutrients also crucial for human health, according to a new study. More than 5 billion people don’t consume enough iodine, vitamin E or calcium, found the study published August 29 in the journal The Lancet Global Health. Billions of people don’t consume enough of at least seven micronutrients present in hundreds of foods, according to a new study. For these reasons, the research team estimated the prevalence of inadequate intakes of 15 micronutrients among 185 countries, or 99.3% of the population. “Therefore, iodine might be the only nutrient for which inadequate intake from food is largely overestimated,” the authors said, referring to their findings.

Belly fat tends to get a bad rap, but new research shows that one kind of belly fat can be healthier than others — provided you’re willing to get moving. The fat, the study found, essentially behaved differently in people with the same percentage of body fat, based on their long-term exercise habits. Regular exercisers had less rigid or fibrous fat tissue, which allows fat cells beneath the skin to expand to store fat, one of the body’s primary sources of energy. While expanding fat cells may sound like a bad thing, it’s actually better for health than having inflexible fat tissue. Another indication of this was that they had more proteins involved with fat metabolism in their fat tissue, the study found.

For this nuclear clock, the scientists used ultraviolet light to excite nuclear particles in an atom of thorium-229 embedded in solid crystal. For decades, atomic clocks have been used in GPS technologies, for space exploration and for keeping international time. The study of physics itself could be revolutionized by using nuclear clocks alongside atomic clocks, according to Zhang. “If the nuclear clock and the atomic clock transition frequency ratio is changing over time, it would be an indication of new physics.”Though there is still much progress to be made before nuclear clocks surpass the performance of atomic clocks — or replace them — these findings hint that such a time isn’t far off, Kolkowitz said. “As better UV laser sources are developed and as some of the mysteries and tricks of nuclear clocks get worked out, I expect that eventually some of the kinds of experiments we are currently doing in my lab to test relativity and search for new physics with atomic clocks will instead be performed with nuclear clocks,” Kolkowitz said.
