☆ Ford sales edge 1% higher in the second quarter, led by trucks

Ford sales rose 1% during the second quarter over the year-earlier period, led by a 5% gain in truck sales, the automaker said Wednesday. Ford truck sales, which include pickups and vans, totaled 308,920 vehicles during the period, the company's best second-quarter performance for the category since 2019, Ford said. Sales of Ford electric vehicles totaled 23,957 during the second quarter, up 61%. GM said total sales of 696,086 made for its highest quarterly sales mark since the fourth quarter of 2020. Auto industry forecasters including Cox Automotive and Edmunds expect second-quarter sales industrywide to be roughly flat year over year.

A weakening economy may help push the Federal Reserve to make more rate cuts this year than the market is currently expecting, according to Lazard. The firm's chief market strategist Ronald Temple said in a second-half outlook that his base case is for the Fed to start cutting interest rates in September, with two additional cuts later in the year. Temple's base case is more aggressive on rate cuts than the current market view. However, Temple says the Fed will be able to lean on the economic data to make a move. Temple did caution that Fed rate cuts may not end up significantly lowering long-term interest rates, which could be bad news for prospective homeowners waiting for mortgage rates to drop.

In 1971, the watch was loaned out, initially on a six-year term which was later extended, to the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, New York. It wasn’t until last year when the watch reappeared 36 years later at an auction in Florida, the park service said. The auctioneer realized whose pocket watch it was and contacted the historical sites and the park service. The park service and FBI then got involved and worked together to verify the watch was the former president’s stolen watch from 1987.

CNN —Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph with stronger gusts, according to a 5 p.m. EST update from the National Hurricane Center. That this formed so early in the season – and in this part of the Atlantic – is a sign of the hyperactive hurricane season to come, according to research from Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert and research scientist at Colorado State University. Normally, ocean temperatures aren’t warm enough in this region in June and July to help tropical systems thrive. That’s hardly the case this year, and one of the reasons behind record-high hurricane season forecasts over the past few months. Both have low odds of developing over the next week, but given the unusual early season action and favorable ocean temperatures, they will have to be watched closely.

Tropical Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, brought intense rain and coastal flooding to parts of Texas and northeastern Mexico on Wednesday, hours before it was expected to make landfall. In Texas, officials warned of flooded roads in the Houston area early Wednesday afternoon. The National Hurricane Center warned that Alberto was a large storm, with tropical-force winds extending about 415 miles north of its center in the Gulf of Mexico as it moved west toward northeastern Mexico. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, but the main concern was rainfall of a foot or more that was predicted for parts of Texas and Mexico. Tropical storm warnings were issued for coastal areas on both sides of the border.

The process taught him how to be detail-oriented, a mindset he enforced at Apple, Jobs' biographer Walter Isaacson told CBS's "60 Minutes" in 2011. Sometimes, escaping naturalism, they embody the emotions of the main characters, amplifying the internal. In “Illinoise,” choreographed and directed by Justin Peck, all the characters are dancers, mutely dancing out the scenarios and tender emotions of a Sufjan Stevens album performed live. Accordingly, the choreography takes on most of the responsibility for storytelling, making it the most ambitious nominee — though that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best.

People who paid nearly $1,400 for an annual pass to Disneyland will begin receiving checks in the mail this month from a $9.5 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit that accused Disney of misleading customers into believing that the program carried “no blockout dates.”More than 100,000 people who bought the Dream Key annual pass between Aug. 25 and Oct. 25, 2021, will each receive about $67.41, a small fraction of what they paid for the pass. The payments were to begin arriving by mail or electronically starting in mid-June, according to the settlement agreement. The lawsuit was filed in November 2021 by a California woman who said she purchased a Dream Key pass to Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., under the impression that the pass would allow her to make reservations for any day of the year. But when she tried in October 2021 to make a reservation for dates in November, she found that she was unable to do so, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit said Disney “appears to be limiting the number of reservations available to Dream Key pass holders in order to maximize the number of single-day and other passes” that it could sell to Disneyland visitors.

CNN —At least nine people were shot at a recreation area in Rochester Hills, Michigan, on Saturday, and a suspect is contained at a home surrounded by officers near the crime scene, police said. One of the victims was 8 years old, said Bouchard, who added he could not comment on the age of the other victims. Bouchard said it appears the suspect pulled up to the recreation area, exited a vehicle and opened fire roughly 20 feet away, reloading multiple times. Authorities are bringing in additional assets, including SWAT teams and armored vehicles to assist officers at the scene, Bouchard said. “A vehicle that matched what had been described as a vehicle leaving the scene was there,” the sheriff said.
