An aide to the Hungarian PM was criticized after suggesting Hungary wouldn't have resisted a Russian invasion. He referred back to a 1956 uprising in Budapest, which the Soviet Union brutally repressed. He said it was "irresponsible" to resist, citing the number of dead in the Ukraine war. He said this was because Hungary had tried and failed to resist the Soviet Union in 1956. Viktor Orbán is Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest ally in the European Union, a position that has put him strongly out of favor in the bloc.

Open AI CEO Sam Altman said he doesn't see AI replacing human writers. AI's use in writing has grown since ChatGPT's launch, with some authors even using AI to write and illustrate books. AdvertisementWhile multiple jobs are seemingly at risk of one day being replaced by AI, Sam Altman doesn't believe writers are one of them. One freelance writer previously told BI that they lost a job after their client began using AI to replace his services. But Altman remains confident that human writers will maintain an advantage over AI — original idea generation.

The People's Bank of China this week cut major interest rates, and announced plans to lower rates for existing mortgage holders. Questions about scaleFor some investment institutions, that's still not enough to move the needle on their China outlook. A survey in September of more than 1,200 companies in China by the U.S.-based China Beige Book found that corporate borrowing declined, despite historic lows in the costs to do so.

CNN —Archaeologists working in Peru, assisted by artificial intelligence, have discovered 303 previously unknown giant symbols carved in the Nazca Desert. A geoglyph of a humanoid with a headdress is one of the newly discovered symbols. Deciphering Nazca symbols’ purposeIt’s not clear why the Nazca people made the symbols. The bigger Nazca symbols were near networks of straight lines, squares and trapezoids etched into the earth. “Our findings suggest that their meaning is formed through their combinations,” he said, referring to the way the Nazca geoglyphs are grouped together.

CNN —No trees have grown on the windswept Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean for tens of thousands of years — just shrubs and other low-lying vegetation. “It’s very sort of windswept and barren.”The Falkland Islands are a British-ruled overseas territory over which Great Britain and Argentina fought a brief war in 1982. But the story of this hidden forest goes back even further in time than the researchers initially thought. “The Falkland Islands are currently covered by grasslands and lack native trees,” Donovan added. However, the islands are unlikely to see a return to a forest landscape anytime soon, Thomas said.
